    BART has the coolest sounding trains of any ones I've ridden. I had no idea we were going that fast when crossing the bay. Awesome!

    Finally the good sounds. I didn’t realize how unique BART was until years after I moved away. I couldn’t sleep one night because no train noise but then discovered nothing sounds like this.

    Your ears don't pop from loud noises. They pop because of air pressure differences.

    I remembered how quiet it waswhen I rode through the transbay tube back when it first opened to the public prior to revenue service in the fall of 1974 when a few excursion trains ran between the Coliseum station to the Montgomery Street station. The Embarcadero station was still being worked on and was not accessible at that time. Quiet through the tube back then. Loud now!!!

    For the automatic announcement system on the Next Generation BART cars:

      Ana R Yep. I’ve ridden BART numerous times and the screeching noise coming from the trains wheels are *LOUD AF* when inside the tunnel.
      Especially if you’re riding the train through the Transbay Tube, your ears tend to get plugged because of the water pressure while traveling underneath San Francisco Bay.

    This front windshield reminds me of how I always thought the side windows needed to be washed periodically. That would have made the ride more enjoyable for us riders. I must have made this trip into the city at least 2,400 times in my 10 years living in the Bay Area. That's a lot of my money in BART's pocket!

  • @PSurfliner
    @PSurfliner 15 лет назад +11

    I've also heard rumors that the maximum allowable speed in the Transbay Tube has been lowered as it has aged.

    • @OliversElevators
      @OliversElevators 2 года назад +4

      It has indeed been lowered, but not because of the Tube's age - rather it was lowered to reduce the wear-and-tear on the trains and tracks. The original top speed of BART was 80 MPH, but it was later reduced to 70 MPH, including through the Transbay Tube, to reduce the frequency of maintenance that needed to be performed on the trains and tracks. Nowadays, it's rare to see a BART train traveling over 70 MPH, but it does still happen occasionally to help late-running trains get back on schedule.

    • @MeEncantaKiley

      I always wondered how often these BART trains travel at full speed (80 mph max.) when going through the Transbay Tube. 30-40 years ago when BART came into service, 80 mph was considered very fast.
      Nowadays for modern advanced electric trains, that’s relatively average. If you’ve ever rode on those high-speed trains in Europe, China, and Japan.....man......those travel 5X faster.

    You are right, HaywardEnteratinment! The tube begins exactly at that spot after trains pass through the square concrete-lined subway tunnel underneath the Port of Oakland. The tube ends at 5:28 where trains pass directly below the Ferry Building and transitions to a circular steel-lined subway tunnel beneath Market Street and the Muni Metro tunnels to reach the Embarcadero Station. The transition areas have a short section of conventional track on concrete ties and ballast.
