- Rainbow Falls in Mammoth Lakes in California is open this summer! This video shows our experiences on the Rainbow Falls Trailhead in Mammoth Lakes in June 2020.
Normally, you must take Mammoth's Mandatory Scenic Shuttle to get to the Rainbow Falls Trailhead but the shuttle is not operating in 2020 due to COVID-19. This means you can drive your car down Reds Meadow Road and park at the trailhead.
We recommend arriving by 7AM to ensure you can get parking. When we were exiting around 11AM, there was a half-mile of cars lined up to get into the park.
We started at the Rainbow Trails Trailhead which is 3.4 miles roundtrip; however, if you want to see Devils Postpile, you can take a longer hike (5 miles) and see both. After Rainbow Falls, we continued to Lower Falls -- it's about another half mile. It's lesser-traveled but worth the short hike! We highly recommend this beautiful eastern sierra hike.

Hi! We started at the Rainbow Falls Trailhead. If you put that in your GPS, it will take you to the parking lot. It's the shortest trail to the waterfall.

Have you been to Mammoth before? Basically, you want to get to the ranger station early. This is located right past the Mammoth Mountain area where the gondolas are. This is where they will have cars wait to enter if the parking lots get full. From the ranger station, it's another 20-30 minute drive to the Rainbow Falls Trailhead. Hope that helps!
Did either of these seem as a challenge if having a energetic 2 year old with you? I feel it can be scary and dangerous taking my kid to both. But I have never been to know
STOCK V8 there were kids on the trail - younger and older. Rainbow Falls is defiantly doable from the top viewpoint. Lower falls is not challenging but the extra distance is probably not worth it. 😉
