Saw her twice...Chicago Jazz Fest and Ravinia....very lucky guy am I. I adore her...from the very time I heard her voice...it was 1979 and I was over a friend’s house who had a ton of albums...mostly rock...he said pick anything you like....I saw her face on the cover of “Ella In Berlin” and decided I wanted to hear her...at the first sound of her voice...that was it - hands down. Couldn’t believe anyone could sing like that...still can’t.
this is such a nice story! i agree - there’s no one else like her. she’s unbelievable! what a true gift she had and think of how lucky are we are that she shared it with the world :)
Go Chicago! May I ask when you saw her at the Jazz Fest and Ravinia? I saw her once when I was studying in France one summer but I didn't fully appreciate her at that time and she also was already pretty old.
Grab your coat and get your hat Leave your worry on the doorstep Just direct your feet To the sunny side of the street Can't you hear a pitter-pat? And that happy tune is your step Life can be so sweet On the sunny side of the street I used to walk in the shade With those blues on parade But I'm not afraid This Rover crossed over If I never have a cent I'll be rich as Rockefeller Gold dust at my feet On the sunny side of the street I used to walk in the shade With those blues on parade But I'm not afraid This Rover has crossed over If I never, never have a cent I'll be rich as Rockefeller With gold dust at my feet On a sunny, sunny side of the street On a sunny, sunny side of the street
A very good Singer performs beautifully this old song my late Dad liked to hear. It is one of those simple songs that are so true, if one feels cold or lonely one should get out of the house and go to where the sun strikes us and soon we shall feel better.
Me too. I only listen to ProleteR to be directed to the originals. I like his/her versions, mind you, but I generally know I am going to like the original more.
I might get some bitterness for this, but ProleteR brought me here. His jazzy Hip-hop remix of this track is amazing & so uplifting. If you can see it in the side bar, click on it! It's freakin' amazing! Share some love with new wave.
@Amon Göth That video has nothing to do with "stealing" copyrighted works, it's not really related to the content of your comment at all. Also, I really don't think sampling and remixing is a problem at all. If anything, it's an extension of musical culture taking advantage of new technologies. Taking other people's works and making them your own has been a part of music for centuries. Composers would often take a tune written by someone else and write variations on them, and performers would create their own cadenzas at the ends of pieces where appropriate. This continued as jazz arose, with legends such as Louis Armstrong taking old tunes like "When The Saints Go Marching In" and making it swing, Miles Davis turning "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Snow White into a jazz standard, or John Coltrane taking "My Favourite Things" from the sound of music and transforming it into an expressionistic masterpiece. And this isn't even mentioning how much people cover each other in jazz, causing some songs to be so common they become jazz standards. And it keeps going. Over half of the Beatles' first studio album being cover songs, written by others. Back then artists had other artists' sheet music, and they made of it what they could, playing with the ideas laid out on the page to make their own art out of what came before. But today, we don't just have sheet music, we have access to the actual sound of other artist's music and are even lucky enough to have tools to creatively play with their recordings! I think it would be a disservice to music, as an art and a tradition, to NOT use this amazing opportunity at our fingertips to create our own art out of what came before.
@Amon Göth Haha, yeah I'm sure Louis Armstrong was asking the original publisher of when the saints to play his song. And even later on, most people didn't ask for permission or buy the rights to use a tune, they just got an illegal real book. And I while I agree that some people who make "remixes" don't put a lot of effort in or do anything that takes any skill, proleter and a number of others certainly do. Saying this type of music creation is easy is as inaccurate as saying that jazz is just a bunch of random notes.
@Amon Göth Do you think before you ask? "When the saints" is an old spiritual and nobody knows who the original writer/composer is. There is no one to ask for permission from. Also you still haven't addressed my point that the entire jazz world is built on copying without permission. Jazz musicians around the world all play jazz standards without asking for permission, all the time. Hell, I've played hundreds of bar gigs composed entirely of songs I hadn't asked to use, from autumn leaves to bye bye blackbirds.
@Trumpeter007 Your rifht it was little jazz. I read somewhere that one of Bill Basies regrets was he and the band never got to play with Pops. Can you imagine what that would of been this side of heaven. ✌ to tou all!
In my opinion this is the best album by Ella. Of course its because of Basie and I think Quincy Jones(! ) who was a producer. All of them contributed this masterpiece of sound. I am looking for "Honeysuckle Rose" from this album. Its the best version of that song ever. Any response??? Thank you for uploading!
@Swiftclaw123 I'm sure that there are *many* instrumental versions of this tune... but I wouldn't have thought you'd find an instrumental version on an album called "Ella and Basie!" :)
I'm lucky to be old enough to see Miss Fitzgerald in concert, a wonderful evening!
Come thru Ella!
I can't tell you how jealous I am !!!!
Lucky you, daddy o
Lucky!!

It's impossible to stay in a bad mood listening to Ella Fitzgerald. Her singing is just so filled with the joy of music-making. Always.
The brass ruins it.
Her voice is soooo full of warmth!
I agree! Her happiness and joy at singing it really come through!
Our Ella, I was so lucky to see her in concert, RIP Miss Fitzgerald
j'ai eu la chance de voir 4 fois ELLA dans ma vie, et ,la derniere fois,a PARIS,EN MAI 1983,c'etait avec le grand COUNT BASIE!INOUBLIABLE!
Miss Fitzgerald is one of those rare singers who can actually give me goosebumps!
How did she do it...
Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat?
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over
If I never have a cent
I'll be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid
This Rover has crossed over
If I never, never have a cent
I'll be rich as Rockefeller
With gold dust at my feet
On a sunny, sunny side of the street
On a sunny, sunny side of the street

I love this version, got it as my favourite duet for my saxophone
An absolute classic from one of the best vocalists ever.
Thanks my Dad I was grown on this music in Soviet Union while everyone around was listening official crap.
Happy Birthday 🎉🎂 Ella!!!!
Fantastic interpretation! Just absolutely fantastic!
Oh my god Count Basie is amazing, for me that's what makes the song.
I might get some bitterness for this, but ProleteR brought me here. His jazzy Hip-hop remix of this track is amazing & so uplifting.
If you can see it in the side bar, click on it! It's freakin' amazing! Share some love with new wave.
ProleteR is doing great things with his creativity!

@Trumpeter007 Your rifht it was little jazz. I read somewhere that one of Bill Basies regrets was he and the band never got to play with Pops. Can you imagine what that would of been this side of heaven. ✌ to tou all!
Still is absolute perfection. I think this is the peak of recorded music.

Such a beauty that makes you heart sequeeze and ears dance with joy
Both sides of the street are always sunny when your joy is in Christ Jesus!
He didn’t want foreigners like you. Spouses and women also didn’t get resurrected. Nonetheless he was a fictional liar, crook, and sinner.
The 14 people who gave this thumbs down....I hope they are not actually that depressed.
J W I'm going to assume they were just rushing so fast to hit the "like" button that they missed 😉
Listen to this at 1.25, it makes it better, for me at least
If you like the Proleter version, listen to this at 1.5 speed
THE VERSION!
beautiful.... :)
You know why I am here, I know why Proletr chose such a good song. I also play Fallout, which has some songs performed by Ella Fitzgerald.
Make people happy
I like it at 1.5x speed
ThatHauntFreak2 of course you do, Proletr
Thank you
@Swiftclaw123 I'm sure that there are *many* instrumental versions of this tune... but I wouldn't have thought you'd find an instrumental version on an album called "Ella and Basie!" :)
I am looking for a song from one of ella's song books called, "For You for me forevermore. Great version......
I can’t help but swing and dance at 1:24
This is so different from proleter's remix, I did not expect such a difference
there wouldn't happen to be an instrumental version of this, woud there be?
@RexKennedy77 thank you for info.
Electro Swing Uwu
@Mike6E ELLA,JEG ELSKER DEG!
@wilm923 Awesome!

To be fair it's not totally instrumental, since Dizzy sings on the last chorus. ;) Kidding, kidding, it's a great recording.
looks like 0 people were on the shady side of the street
:)
This Is what you get you get when Everybody knows what they're doing.😉
im here because of amy winehouse’s “chill-out tape” list
Check Billie Holliday doing this one .....
i was brought here by sonny rollins and dizzy gillespie... think i actually prefer their version. tho i does love me some ella!
The ProleteR version of this is better, but still good
raven33mn you just don’t get it man 😂
ProletR turned this song into a whole different genre, it doesn't make much sense to compare the two IMO.
try listening to this song at 1.5 speed
Set Playback speed to 1.5x, thank me later
Please check the dutch jazz masters version as well:

Lady Day did it better!
Really slow compared to Proleter's cover, just sayin'.
