Gwen Stefani has been accused of cultural appropriation after she discussed bringing some Japanese culture into her brand. However, she never actually claimed to be Japanese. This is a typical case of cultural appreciation mistaken as cultural appropriation.

    Japanese here
I am not offended by Stefani's words and actions on this matter.
There is an English phrase I find appropriate here: "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery".
If this is "cultural appropriation" of Japanese culture, then so is singing karaoke or playing
    Sudoku.
The American left needs to acquire grips and cease telling every how to live their own lives.

@@williamoverton7775 I'm a little confused by your comment. You are saying that no one is offended by this and then calling it cultural appropriation at the same time. I'm not offended by what she said, but at the same time, I do not agree with the word " cultural appropriation" being used to attack someone or cancel them. Cultural appreciation is a far better term . I'm not hating or even disagreeing with you, I just don't understand what you were expressing.

      @ajb.822 Год назад

Yes, I'm glad u feel that way. I can understand if someone were to wear something with a strong cultural identity in a truly disrespectful way, obviously being mocking in some way. Or if something, like a head-dress for ex., had been a very sacred article of clothing and you do feel disturbed seeing it in costumes like for Halloween, so u ask people not to do that. But that's all. State your wish as a member of that culture or faith, or even as an onlooker just bothered by it, and leave it at that. To act like clothing and music styles, words or notes, or anything else can belong only to you or anyone just because you were the 1st or the most well known or most recent in history, to discover, invent, enjoy or use it... is ridiculous and selfish.
OR, the way the left is treating this... it's as if, say, since I am of mostly German ancestry, I can't enjoy and take part in ANY other ethnic group's culturally popular foods, music, dance, clothing styles etc. . Unless it's brand new and I can prove it, I have to stick with sourbraten and strudel and polka music etc. . Sorry, no. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to enjoy pizza , Thom Yum soup ( if I'm spelling that correctly ... I'm new to Thai foods) & hard-shell tacos. And as much as I love apple strudel, if I had to choose only one, it's tiramisu every time ( or key lime or lemon pie).

Hispanics can be of any race. There are more white Hispanics than any other race. Stop! Hispanic simply means you come from or have parental ties to a Latin American country or territory that speaks Spanish, but you can be of any race. Latino means the same except Latinos have ties to or come from Latin American countries or territories that do not speak Spanish. I know you are probably saying 'how can there be more white Latinos and Hispanics than non white Latinos and Hispanics', and it is because Caucasian is the major race in all of Latin America. Why is that, well because the two heavily populated countries in Latin America, have millions of whites. The most populated country is Brazil, and more than half of all people in South America live in just one country, Brazil. There are more white Brazilians than all other races combined. The 2nd most populated country in Latin America is Mexico, and over a third of all Mexicans are white. Then you have places like Cuba, and Cuba may be the whitest place in all of Latin America, because over 80% of the Cuban population is white. That is likely the reason the Democrats do not care about Cubans, because they cannot use their race to pander for votes. What are they gonna tell Cubans, these white Republicans hate you, they cannot do that because most Cubans are white. Nonetheless, there are way more white Latinos and Hispanics than non white.

So, I wish, for his sake to have a little feel of belonging to a culture like most of the rest of us less-anciently-native Americans do, he COULD appropriate some Scottish ancestry for himself.. . I get to know that I'm about 34ths German, 1/8th Swedish and the balance in English and Danish. I get have recipes from my grandmothers of ethnic dishes from those countries. I get to look around Wisconsin and think of how the countryside reminded my ancestors of their old home, and brought the cheese, beer, brats, dairy farming and polka music with them ! Sadly, I'm definitely intolerant of both dairy and gluten, so, I can better enjoy a bowl of Thom Yum soup nowadays, than my favorites of my own ethnic foods like bread & deep fried breaded cheese curds ( well, did they have those in ye olde Germany ? If not they should have... absolutely the best thing ever !!! ) besides potatoes, which of course are from America, anyways.

So when a White woman uses Japanese culture to look cool in the same industry and uses Japanese women as accessories it becomes problematic. This is a country that objectifies and hypersexualizes Asian women, but has never had an Asian American Britney Spears or Gwen Stefani.

There is a whole hip hop culture that dates back to the 80s in Asia, particularly in Japan and Korea. Now they're over there wearing dreads, box braids, and rapping. As an American, if you weren't into anime or Japanese subculture, you didn't really know what Harajuku was until Gwen and Kpop had not yet gone mainstream. Asian pop and hip hop is actually pretty good and entertaining, it wasn't a problem until it was😒

I’m so glad to hear a review on Gwen’s side about this… I can’t stand how people take things out of context and don’t look at the entire interview they just focus on one little part and make it something that it’s not. Gwen loves other cultures and most Japanese people aren’t even offended. Don’t come for me but Gwen has absolutely no negative intentions just love and is absolutely not a racist and this is just a form of art that happened to represent another culture which most Japanese people are happy that a big celebrity like herself brought representation of their culture to the US… people need to calm tf down. Seriously. Gwen gets inspired, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with what she did. As far as those that say she was using the harajuku girls as props.. which she absolutely didn’t and treated them with nothing but respect, they were girls that obviously agreed to being back up dancers and they were paid and they had absolutely no issue with it in fact I’m sure it’s something that was exciting and something they were proud to have on their resumes. Overall it was exposure to an amazing culture to the US that Gwen absolutely loves and again most Japanese people have no problem with this. This interviewer just wanted attention and to create a scandal just like they do to every celebrity these days.

There are so many people whose identity is entirely about attacking others. They ooze negativity. When they go on a negative rant, they should be asked, “Tell me one positive thing you have done to help another person (or animal). Tell me one positive thing you have said or done that alleviated someone else’s suffering. You don’t have to save the world. Tell me one thing that you did out of a genuine sense of kindness and compassion.” There are a ton of people who quietly do something or say something, every day, that brightens another person’s life. Just saying “hello” with a smile to an invisible homeless person can make their day. They might remember that “hello” for years.

That is a very good idea ! Also, just saying hello with a smile can make a huge difference in ANYone's life, I KNOW ! I had had a very dark and isolated period of life in my teens & 20s in a unique home-life situation with a bitter, volatile, oft-abusive Dad in an extremely had, family business life. Just having a checkout clerk girl once smile at me in such a genuine, sincere way ( so many young people around the area by that time were getting rather stuck-up), when I was at the farm supply store - about the only place I went, had a chance to go, those days. It was near the end of the darkest and most friendless of those years, & so still sticks in my mind as a VERY comforting, light-filled moment after a LONG stretch of so little. Sounds pathetic but It really did make my day, my week !

There is a whole list of things that I can say are appropriated from Europeans. But I don't really care if anybody wears them. 1 of the biggest things that Europeans could count as appropriation is the white wedding dress. That historically was started by queen Victoria. In fact before queen Victoria women never wore white for their wedding so we could say that anybody who isn't British descent or the very least white can't wear a white wedding dress since it descended from queen Victoria. Cultural appropriation is such a dumb concept... If I wear a floral embroidered dress people can try to claim that that's appropriation of Mexicans but they have the same floral embroidered dresses in eastern Europe and me being white eastern Europeans wouldn't care so how can somebody claim appropriation when multiple cultures have similar things in them.

Her style from that era was PERFECT. Her ability to reuse shirts, shoes, accessories, etc and make tons of outfits with that one piece is a huge part of j-fashion culture (as well as second hand clothing; which she mentions in her song harajuku girls). Not to mention, her Japanese pronunciation isn't bad in my opinion (for a non speaker). You can hear in Rich Girl her pronunciation of harajuku is perfect whilst Eve's sounds like a typical American's pronunciation. I feel a connection to Japanese culture as well and I've said many times "I feel Japanese inside" or things like that (even when I was a kid and teenager!) Japan and most specifically harajuku culture/fashion has given me LIFE. It is why I am who I am today, it's made me happy, allowed me to make so many new friends, speak to so many Japanese people, etc. There's nothing wrong with loving Japan and also no one says this when American's love French culture or any European countries like that.

The reason was the British wore powdered wigs over their real hair and they ( our people and government) did not want to be reminded of this and they did not want a congressman or woman to show up one day with a powdered wig. this all lasted till Omar and she was magically admitted with a headdress. This reminds me of the time when a kid from England came into my son's second grade class. A couple of weeks after he arrived, I was called to the principal's office to discuss mu son's unacceptable behavior - a group of kids were accused of cultural appropriation for imitating the English accent and my son had refused to apologize; instead, he said he was not mocking Lawrence, he was his friends, and he was speaking with a British accent because it was so cool. We were being delivered threats of suspension and marks on the permanent record when the other kid's mother arrived and the principal started to apologize profusely. But the British mother interrupted her haughtily: "No apology necessary, and no offense. We love to see this young lad learn how to speak properly!" Bottom line, cultural appropriation occurs when someone from a dominant culture imitates someone from a less prominent one. If anyone thinks for a minute that any Japanese would consider American culture superior to the Japanese one, that person is delusional.

Ok so Gwen is accused of cultural apporpriation because she admires Japan and Japanese culture....the girls in the video and in Japan wear taran.... I am Scottish so should I accuse the Japanese girls in the video of cultural appropraition of Scottish culture??? ..lol..... I cant tell you the amount of people who visit Scotland and wear taran or kilts mainly Americans to be honest and Scottish people dont take offence they just take it as they like Scotland ..... Some people just look to take offence on behalf of others .... It must be really exhausting looking for issues ALL the time!!

You dont see us mexicans/Latinos complaining about her sweet escape video.... when the whole video is about mexican culture.... i personally love it i think it shows something we can relate too and that its being shown to the world i find it comforting that i can relate to the video

It’s OK to pretend you’re a male or female but not ok to elude in the most vaguest terms that you are so inspired by a country’s traditional GARB. 🤯
