She Says People Need To Give Credit Where Credit Is Due Regarding Cultural Foods

- Cultural appropriation, to many, means people with a privileged status taking cultural identity markers without permission or without acknowledgment from members of a minority community. This can include language, art, music, literature, clothing, food, beauty standards/traditions, social norms, customs, and values. So, does that mean that a Caucasian person can never own a Chinese restaurant? Can a Latino wear braids or locks? Should children never wear Halloween costumes that depict another culture, ethnicity or race? When does admiration turn into appropriation, and is the argument against appropriation just? Does the anti-appropriation movement ever turn into a form of racism? Meet a young woman who says she received death threats for wearing a dress from another culture, a woman who says she was called out for cosplaying a Japanese anime character, and a woman who says people need to stop stealing other cultures' foods and calling them their own. Dr. Neal Lester, foundation professor of English at Arizona State University, Brittany Collins, influencer and business owner, and Amala Ekpunobi, PragerU personality and host of the podcast Unapologetic LIVE, join Dr. Phil for a passionate debate. Not only Professor positions but some of the classes at the Universities are truly laughable. The scholars from the early 1800s are flipping over in their graves.

Food scarcity will soon be a much more pressing issue, thanks to the same people who are upset about getting proper citation for recipes that they themselves had nothing to do with to begin with.

What a RIDICULOUS discussion! When children starve in the world people are discussing how making a drink with ingredients easily available everywhere is 'appropriated' from another culture.
All I see is A LOT of low self esteem!

Exactly, it’s low self esteem. When you’re truly happy with yourself and your life you want to share that happiness. You want to teach people how to cook your food and teach them about your culture and watch them enjoy it. And if they make money on it then a happy person would feel happy for them and happy about how they inspired that. And why don’t they just profit from it instead of watching others profit from it then crying about it and demanding a handout. That’s what people with low self-worth do
THANK YOU! I’ve gone hungry as a kid, and these crybabies are complaining about food being shared between cultures. I bet they’d STFU if they were starving and tell people they’re sorry for being so stupid and “share” a piece of bread while they’re hunched over dying.

In Uganda we have a side dish called kachumbali it’s basically chopped onion and tomato and we eat it with grilled meet. Some time I went to Mexican restaurant with best friend and we got a side of salsa and we were both shocked about how similar it is to Kachumbali. Because of this I believe it’s possible to have two types of food in two different cultures that are incredibly similar. So the whole food appropriation is just so weird
You just appropriated Mexican culture. You need to track down the person that invented salsa and pay them compensation for all the Ugandans who make kachumbali 😂😂
You are correct! And There’s a lot of immigrants in Mexico from all over the world as well. I would not be surprised if our “pico” is inspired by your kachumabali and that is totally fine. If anyone “copied” our food I would be flattered not offended.
The tomato originally came from South America and through trade it was brought to Mexico where it was domesticated. The Mexica (Aztecs) developed the small green tomatl (often called a tomatillo today) and the larger red jitomatl. Tomatl became tomate in Spanish, and the Spanish brought it to Europe, and from there to the rest of the world, including Uganda.
