  • Check out this witty preview of Hal Holbrook as "Mark Twain Tonight," coming to NJPAC's Prudential Hall on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Since the show's debut in 1959, Emmy and Tony Award-winner and Oscar nominee Hal Holbrook's landmark one-man performance as the American author and humorist has become one of the most successful productions in the history of American theater-a funny, fascinating portrayal in which one great American artist embodies the very essence of another. "Holbrook's characterization of the great novelist and raconteur is, to this day, a work in progress," says THE WASHINGTON POST. "His transformation is so complete as to be almost unsettling at times...a mesmerizing thing to behold."

RIP Mr. Holbrook. Thank goodness this example will live on for those that never got to see you bring Mark Twain to life.

Perhaps the most briliant one man show ever. Have seen it three times and spoke with Mr. Holbrook once. Told him I had been following his career since he was on a soap opera in the 1950s called "The Brighter Day" Never dreamed then he would be the creator of an during masterpice of theater. And as he has aged, his portrayal is evenm better!

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall if Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde ever met and conversed in person.

If Sam could have seen Hal playing him he would have laughed, then criticized his performance...may they both rest in peace.

Wonderful to see Hal as marvelous as always! He hasn't lost a thing in his wryly hilarious, touching prortrayal. However, one thing puzzles me... WHY is the once whitish-blonde hair now so dark looking? Compare this to the many clips on RUclips of Hal in his 1960's CBS TV special and you'll immediately see what I mean. Odd. But still, nothing amiss with that classic performance!

Holbrook did Twain longer than Samuel Clemmens did.
When he first started, the Twain makeup had to age Hal substantially. And perhaps that led to the white wig he used back then. Later, he grew to be older than Twain ever was. So he was playing a chaeacter younger than himself. So perhaps he switched to an darker, younger version to shed some years.
