hi michael, im having some problems with my mates 63 pontiac australian version, seems to run a 62 chev steering column, does the canceling cam on the back of the steering wheel stop the steering shaft from sliding down into the column? my mates one is missing the canceling cam and the back of the steering wheel is hitting on the indicator mechanism, there seems to be nothing stopping the shaft from sliding down.

Does it work from the horn ring. Mine only works when pressed from the center like you did.
Nope, I thought that is how it was supposed to be. I had an original spring plate and can't find it now, I think the new ones may be too stiff.
