  • Sometimes after you finish a project you come to realize that another problem is created. And then it just lingers because the original project is completed. Well, we finally get around to fixing a really annoying problem with our spiral staircase.

    This brought back fond childhood memories of trying to walk down the hallway without making a peep to get midnight snacks. I walked along the edges of the walls. In this case it will not work lol

    Brian is totally amazing. He's so patient and easy going and smart too! If he gets bored, he could come fix a squeaky kitchen floor I have....lol. He could ride his bike to the east coast! He is a keeper. I sure miss mine who was so much like him. God Bless all of you....I enjoy your videos as they take me down memory lane :)

    Painting is a very intense operation if done correct. And good paint supplies are very expensive!!! My son and I, mostly him, have been painting for over 20 years. He has mastered the process and turns out amazing paint jobs. Show quality and beautiful. I am trying to talk him into painting my 67 SS Chevelle next....

      Thanks for sharing! Bryan is a big fan of RUclipsr ETOE who does custom bike painting; been watching him for years. We just sold an enormous paint sprayer kit (used to be his dads for painting planes) at a screaming deal $500. Fortunately have a bunch of supplies around.

    Early in my 30 year cabinetmaking career in Colorado I was told that wood never actually dies until you burn it. Seasonal humidity changes can make a 12" wide piece of wood expand and contract upwards of 1/8". I would not be surprised if that stair landing moves almost 1/4". The thickness of each tread is also changing with the humidity which changes the stresses applied to the landing mounting points. Maybe slot holes in the angle iron to allow for the movement. If wood can't move it will crack and warp. Beautiful job on everything you have done!

      We've notice quite a bit of shrinkage in our wood floors. Quite disappointing, despite them having been acclimating inside for 6 weeks prior to installation (after store purchase in Colorado). We expect to track changes as it ages, but that landing squeak was something else!

    If the silicone caulk fails and the squeak comes back, my thought would be to put a strip of heavy (at least 1/8 inch thick) compressed felt material as a gasket on each leg of the angle iron so that there's no metal to wood contact.

    My very favorite bike was a $5 auction bought cherry red banana-seater my dad got for me, despite a brand new Huffy BMX at home. Kinda wish I still had it.
    My other favorite was a brand new 1985 Cannondale, saved all $800 myself (15yo me) and I rode centurions with the neighbor for a couple summers. Sadly it was stolen but I discovered the joys of getting my license and buying a car.
    Obviously my son (prior comment) had a tree issue with his bike, but all said and done he still rides and has my 9 yo grandson riding. It's great to see a simple thing like a bicycle carry so many memories through my families generations. Most are great happy memories.
    I can't wait to see how that paint job turns out! Plus building a paint booth know-how wouldn't hurt.

    From the first shot going down the stairs, my guess on what was wrong is that each step is too small and the total stairway isn’t wide enough as evidenced by Brian having to twist his body a bit when using it even though he might not even realize now.

    If the silicone doesn't work you could trim the wood floor part down to where it's not making contact with the metal. No one would notice if there's a 1/8 inch gap there.

    Does this only happen in the Winter? You may have a dry house. Doe you have a humidifer to put moisture into the house. If your burning wood you will dry the air in the house and the wood will dry out and shrink thus causing the creaking noise.

    • @ColoradoMountainLiving
      @ColoradoMountainLiving  3 года назад

      It's Colorado and exceptionally dry most of the year. We do not burn wood for heat.

    our whole house is wood , log home , log stair case etc etc , squeaks come an go with the seasons , weather / humidity as wood drys and expands . that staircase and its proximity to the surroundings could be a real squeaker in the years to come as house gets older an matures into its own self , it was an still is a living thing , just talking to ya

  • @brianhendrick7164
    @brianhendrick7164 3 года назад

    put talcum powder in the joints, that will act as a dry lubricant and stop the squeaks, works well on floorboards as well as stairs.

      Hmm someone else mentioned that. Sounds messy.

    • @brianhendrick7164
      @brianhendrick7164 3 года назад

      No, just a very light dusting is enough to cure a squeak where 2 surfaces are rubbing together. It reduces friction which is why you get the noise

    I think the caulking will be a permanent fix but if not you might try a gasket..rubber or even leather. Your bike may not be the fastest but I am betting it will have the least air friction than all the rest!

    • @ColoradoMountainLiving
      @ColoradoMountainLiving  3 года назад +1

      great suggestions. Perhaps the caulking becomes a rubber gasket in a way. Woo hoo for least air friction!

    Building physics are not a fantasy-class. Woodwork stairs expansion of wood- tensions or even the classic bendings- its all part of the plan "how to build such a stair" structural engineering- all of this you learn if you become a carpenter for such elements. And if you would ask the audience if you would share plans then you would give professionel knowlage a chance to offer informations. Staris out of one peace never will stay straight. Never. Thats way you cut them in 3 or more peaces and clue them together in the other direction so taht makes them harder to bend. Wood tansions----like a language. I prefer building stairs NOT after the style but after the practic side. Lets see if your stairs will benoice free in 4 weeks when the winter is over or if they make noices in summer again when the humidity starts...

    • @ColoradoMountainLiving
