I’m a disabled former Marine. I watch these videos constantly. For losing weight😂. Whenever I’m hungry, I watch a few of these first and bam, appetite killed for hours. I’ve lost 15 pounds in the past two weeks. No lie. I gotta say dude, you’re my hero eating this shit. Good grief. “Yeah, that taste like dirt. Oh no, I shouldn’t have done that”, that wasn’t cool at all!” Straight up bad ass man. 🙏🙏🙏
You didn't open the open the b-1 unit that contained the 2 chocolate style discs. We used to call them "shit discs". They were a weapon in their own right. We used to throw them at each other and they were some how aerodynamic. You could be pretty accurate throwing them with a good amount of force. I threw one at a buddy of mind, aiming at his helmet but it was low and hit him in the eye. It gave him a nice shiner.
1. Pretend you are surviving a zombie apocalipse at your home :p 2. Get hungry (if you aren't already) 3. Eat your favourite lunch while watching MRE opening videos
I was fortunate as a kid to have had the opportunity to have eaten most of these at one time or another. I used to love the B units as a kid for some reason. I can remember eating the fudge and thinking it was delicious. I also remember enjoying the peanut butter and blackberry jam cans. Of course I drank my share of old cocoa beverage powder packs. I wish we could get a company to accurately remanufacture these old c rations!
Invert sugar is ordinary sucrose that has been heated in weak acid so that it splits into glucose and fructose, which are actually sweeter than sucrose itself.
I was in the Army from 1982 to 1985. We ate C- ration, packaged 1977-79, until 1984 then MREs in 85. The first MRE's sucked bad. Thanks for the video, brought back some fond times
Yeah, opening those green C-rat cans reminded me of drills with the VA Nat'l Guard in the 1980s. While the 1970s-era products we ate weren't rancid then, boy, they certainly weren't as good as modern MREs. The pound and nut cakes were generally sugar and flavored flour. We usually tossed them out, too, and went back for the hot meals from the mess kitchens.
Isn't it funny how peanut butter never seems to go bad? it's a shame the ancient Egyptians didn't preserve their royalty by slathering them in peanut butter. Then they could have rolled them in a delicious crushed peanut coating. Umm, So good.
Fantastic video Steve! Really getting into mres and vintage rations. I've watched nearly half your videos in a week and am now vigorously looking for mres and rations so thank you. I think this was one exciting opening and feel this video should be watched by a lot more people than have done so. Can't wait to watch more, loved the videos from the other day. Thank you for making history accessible to so many like me who never would have discovered this passion were it not for intrepid people like you.
+steve1989mreinfo You know the funny thing is, I have watched so many of your videos that if you don't post for a few days I start to wonder if some pound cake from 40 years ago downed you. It's almost like a modern day Crocodile Hunter- we all know Steves doing something dangerous and there's the thrill of seeing if you make it out lol
I have just become OBSESSED with watching your videos! I don't know what it is but your commentary, timing, and delivery is SO entertaining to me, keep it up! I already binge watched everything, I can't wait for you to post more!
These tasted a lot better closer to their sell by date. I remember getting a bunch of the C rations from something called Railroad salvage, which was a MoPac run RailRoad Salvage store that sold old things that had been for sale from other factions of the Market, Or maybe my dad got them from the base, I am not sure which. It was during the 70's and early 80's that he would open the boxes up and start telling us about his war years in the Korean Vietnam and following years of military rations. I even had cases and cases of the MRE's from the Late 80's and early 90's I love the Chocolate cover cookie bars. The freeze dried fruit packages were cool too. Love your channel just found it today. I'd be there eating the stuff with you if I could. Thanks for doing it.
I remember in the early 80’s camping with my father, we has C rations, the coconut candy was really good. Still remember it today with fond thoughts. Thanks for bringing this back
I've had a "perfectly fine" MRE before... You're a brave man. Keep the videos coming; I'm thinking about turning these into my new diet regimen by helping me lose my appetite 😂
A fella on Reddit who has posted a fair bit about his time in Vietnam got linked to your channel today by me, he said he preferred the Cake, Pound, Canned, Baked (pound cakes) and the hot ticket meals were the Long Range ones.
When I went to basic in 1983 we had C rations out in the field. My guess is they were using up the last of them. When I got to my first duty station we had the MRE's. Still got the p-38 from 1983 on my key ring.
I tend to prefer a p-51 because you can use the weight of your keys for a bit of a pendulum assist. The down side is the blade tends to flip open and catch on things. On the other hand a p-38 will stay closed but you then have to either take it off of your keys or palm them while using it.
Bro I can't say this enough, I love watching your videos. They are both entertaining and amusing to see someone do what you do. Keep up the good work homie :)
Sorbitol is what was used (maybe it still is) in dietetic candies in the 70's and 80's. It is notorious for causing explosive diarrhea. So if that happens it probably is not because of the age of the product, but this ingredient.
It is still in some sugar-free commercial gum sold in the US. I cannot speak for other countries, but I see it on the ingredients of at least like 25% of gums here.
I was USMC 82-86, started with C rats, ended with MRE. I loved C rats, 3 times a day you made a stove and cooked with the heating tabs, gave you something to do. Plus they didn't give you constipation. That was really nice.
Jelly does not go bad for quite a long time if it is well-preserved as it is just sugar and fruit. Sorbitol is a known laxative. Most people that eat it are fine, but that stuff can give you the serious shits. Funny enough, it is still in a lot of commercial gum today (at least in the US.)
We had these C-Rats in the late 70's. Given the choice of C-Rats or Pizza, definitely Pizza! But they gave nutrition (2000 Calories?) for soldiers in the field, plus you could always trade with your buddies if you ended up with a meal you didn't like. I never did try the MRE's but they don't sound too bad to me.
I remember this Field Ration when I was in the NAVY SEABEES.... It was all good, when it was fresh... within a few months of being made.... 🐭🐭🐭 The Ratt in Texas.
I feel like buying rations and eating them while watching Steve risk food borne diseases for our entertainment. Thanks Steve for keeping us so entertained
The plant where the poundcake was made still exists in Nashville. It's a car museum now. It has a room showing the history of the bread plant, including one of the poundcakes. BTW, "spat" is the correct past tense of "spit". Very few people use it any more, so it sounds odd.
Another great video Steve! One of these days I'll learn not to watch your videos on an empty stomach, I'm super-hungry now! It's making me really want to tear into some of the B units I've accumulated.
Dude I love watching these. One question, Ever since I saw Platoon and saw the guy complaining about the Turkey loaf, I've wanted to try and see how bad they really are. Have you had one and if so how was it?
I want to suggest that you disinfect the lid (or the bottom, whichever end you're opening) so that you're not contaminating the food with whatever nastiness is on the outside of the can & can opener between cans.
'79...was wondering what happening to the cigarettes....guess i went in at a great time...cigarettes out on the field.. Steve, your dan stomach is lined in steel or something....how do you eat this crap? Good job...love these videos.....brings back some good memories...I can literally see stuff had forgotten...
STEVE!!! SHAME ON YOU! I've never been offended by any of your videos until just now when you called yourself an idiot. You are NOT an idiot! You are by far one of the most intelligent, knowledgeable and articulate men I've ever watched. The respect that you display towards our troops; both past and present, is very admirable. So please don't ever say that again. That is all! P.S..Make more videos please! Much love, Daphne from Bluefield, WV
I've got a recent food horror story to kill all your appetites stone dead: I was making spaghetti, and had opened a box of noodles I had for a while. It was sealed up, but somehow bugs still got into it. There were bits of gnats in the water, and little maggots (I guess) in the unused noodles I pulled from the box. Needless to say everything went straight in the can and I went and bought some new noodles.
I ate a lot of C-Rats. The B-2 desserts were the best things in the case. And Ham & Lima Beans was the worst - followed closely by Ham & Eggs, Chopped.

Steve's immune system is a military force all on its own!
Sorry that nut roll was so bad! I'll eat one as payback. I'll send you something worthy of eating soon!
LOL My favorite part. " OH NO! YEA THATS JUST RANCID!!!!, wait lemme take another bite."
I really enjoy eating while I watch you open these. lol.
Heck yea Steve keep up the great work bud
+kolo same here! Love eating while watching these.
Me too! I thought I was the only one, haha!
Same here , sometimes I watch his videos just to get hungry lol
itwasabaddream Don't ask me..my stomach is weird 🤔

I just dont understand why I enjoy watching Steve's reviews so much. They relax me and sometimes I will fall asleep while watching. Thanks Steve.
1. Pretend you are surviving a zombie apocalipse at your home :p
2. Get hungry (if you aren't already)
3. Eat your favourite lunch while watching MRE opening videos
The fudge bar must be ok, it tasted weird when they were brand new too! LOL!
"This one's SORTA edible. I'm gonna take another bite just to make sure" Steve kills me. I love this channel so much.

"1979 Good year.."
I dont think anyone has said that about food, since 1980
+Martin Brown or 1979
+Martin Brown January 1980 at the latest.
Maybe 90 at the latest lol food in cans is good for a few years after lol
"... Tastes like dirt - I'll have another bite."
Invert sugar is ordinary sucrose that has been heated in weak acid so that it splits into glucose and fructose, which are actually sweeter than sucrose itself.
Which pretty much makes it the same thing as HFCS, which is glucose and fructose in roughly equal amounts.
Crushed an entire can of 50 year old jam. Legend.
Let's try this for fun... yeah, it tastes like dirt. ahahahaha
ahh MAN!!
Your videos are awesome. I'm addicted.
I was in the Army from 1982 to 1985. We ate C- ration, packaged 1977-79, until 1984 then MREs in 85. The first MRE's sucked bad. Thanks for the video, brought back some fond times

Ate c rats in basic in 1984. Now I wish we hadn’t played combat hockey with the john Wayne chocolate

Reptile Aliens and Illuminati confirmed.
I have just become OBSESSED with watching your videos! I don't know what it is but your commentary, timing, and delivery is SO entertaining to me, keep it up! I already binge watched everything, I can't wait for you to post more!
I like the ominous music that Steve added over the top of the part where he was ralphing.
Nice!
Alright!
Fun one. I enjoy watching you open cans. Your descriptions are great.
This is a really good channel. I'm surprised these videos don't have more views.

I ate the orange nut roll in the early 1960's and they were tasty.
always a pleasure to see your videos in my feed, steve!
This is my life now... Coming home from university, making myself food and watching 40 year old MREs
I've had a "perfectly fine" MRE before... You're a brave man. Keep the videos coming; I'm thinking about turning these into my new diet regimen by helping me lose my appetite 😂
Idk how i found this channel a few months ago, or why i watch all twenty minutes of each video, however i enjoy every minute of it :D
My pap was in the army towards the end of Vietnam he said that they got left over rations from the Korean War
I have no idea, but these videos are so soothing to watch!
A fella on Reddit who has posted a fair bit about his time in Vietnam got linked to your channel today by me, he said he preferred the Cake, Pound, Canned, Baked (pound cakes) and the hot ticket meals were the Long Range ones.
"Sorta edible."
-Eats another piece of fudge to make sure-
When I went to basic in 1983 we had C rations out in the field.
I ordered a couple p38s off eBay because of Steve's videos.
For a fifty year old biscuit... I'm impressed with both you, and the biscuit.
Such calming videos, thanks for the upload!

This is one of the few Steve videos where I found myself yelling "Dude don't do it!" and laughing at the same time. I love this channel...
I love the way you describe these things
“Oh that’s really rancid… gotta take another bite to make sure” lol I love you Steve
Over all a nice haul. Really cool to see an edible coconut bar. I wish we had taste-o-vision, I would gladly take the bad with the good.
Worried about the sorbitol, but ate the black jelly!!
Nice!
I always hope one of those fudge disks or fruit & nut rolls will be perfectly preserved one day.
Dude the sounds you make are fucking hilarious... Thanks - I enjoy your videos.
Back in the day, Beechies were a pretty common staple in some people's Halloween offering...
The final surviving can of C-Ration pineapple jam
We had these C-Rats in the late 70's. Given the choice of C-Rats or Pizza, definitely Pizza! But they gave nutrition (2000 Calories?) for soldiers in the field, plus you could always trade with your buddies if you ended up with a meal you didn't like. I love getting baked an watching theses videos just load a bowl for you man thumbs up
After that talk about the 20 year old pound cake your reaction to that pound cake you had was hilarious.

"Sort of edible" hahahahaLove your videos Steve.

"first good one, no wait."
I don't know why but opening each can is soooo satisfying
“That’s gourmet” hahaha much love Steve.. awesome content
I want to suggest that you disinfect the lid (or the bottom, whichever end you're opening) so that you're not contaminating the food with whatever nastiness is on the outside of the can & can opener between cans.

I got a p-38 for less than $1 at a surplus store. Works great. Used it a lot this week
Steve, you crack me up bro! Thanks for these videos. So entertaining and informative!
Steve was so angry back then, love it
The food label descriptions are friggin comedic. RUclips, Video, Comment, Internet.
I'd love to see a Steve1989 AMA on reddit.
When Steve got everything on the tray and said “looks good” instead of “nice, m’kay” I just about had a stroke.
"Oh No! That's rancid! ...let me try another piece." LMFAO!
STEVE!!! SHAME ON YOU!

He’s not gonna fuck you, Daphne
Does anyone give a "eww" face when he's about to take a bite haha love your videos bro!
I did just before he took a taste of that rancid MRE cheese....
Your videos are the most relaxing thing ever!
No problem man. One day Reddit will discover your awesomeness and you'll be rolling in subscribers I think :)
I've got a recent food horror story to kill all your appetites stone dead: I was making spaghetti, and had opened a box of noodles I had for a while. Had I thought of it at the time, I might have grabbed my filter mask.
Sparrow9612 What you thought were maggots were probably weevil larvae.
That happened to me with a box of mac and cheese once. Very sad day.
Growing up near the Czech border....loved the nut cake and the fruit cake. Had my first peanut butter and spreadable cheese out of those cans 😂😂😂
never seen red pineapple before.
This brings back memories. I remember eating the peanut butter and jelly in the late 1970's when I was a kid.
Meant PB & J canned C rations.
You must have read my mind. I just came across R C Gusto. Loving his vids too:)
To celebrate along with Steve I got some shortbread cookies and jam. Of course, mine wasn't 50 years old....
Steve has fun with this stuff. NO KIDDING, STEVE??😝
I finally got my own b-2 unit for this ration set, hope to find the rest!
I ate a lot of C-Rats. The B-2 desserts were the best things in the case. And Ham & Lima Beans was the worst - followed closely by Ham & Eggs, Chopped.
Steve you are awesome you reply to many comments not many RUclipsrs do that
you're a legend for taste testing lol.
I like to imagine that I'm eating a ration when I'm watching one of his videos and eating some food
Awesome video Steve. Thanks for doing this so I dont have to!
Yep - memories of FTX’s and Reforgers in ‘76 - ‘79. Also, try using the P-38 in the opposite direction - much faster.
The fudge bars were weird when they were fresh. And the John Wayne Bars Disc Choc tasted like fortified choc wax.
"Ah man; it touched that orange thing." hahahahLOL
do you open your Chef Borarde with a P38
