In 1973, PM Bhutto was instrumental in the creation of Pakistan's third constitution. This required extensive consultations and compromises among various political factions. However, he also initiated a military operation that sought to restore order in Balochistan. Despite this internal strife, Bhutto managed to maintain the delicate balance of political consensus that underpinned the new constitution. A critical decision during this period was Bhutto's selection of General Zia-ul-Haq as the Chief of Army Staff. Why did Bhutto choose Zia as the army chief?

Bhutto had so many exceptional qualities. He was a world class leader, head and shoulders above all of the politicians of his time. Alas, he got intoxicated with power and trampled upon whatever and whoever came his in way. His megalomania and lust for power not only led to his own sad downfall, but also handed the Army a golden opportunity to regain the control it had lost after the humiliating defeat of 1971. If only his good side had prevailed upon his ugly one, Pakistan would surely be in a much better shape and place today!
