  • Malden's only collection of ghost stories, NINE GHOSTS, was published in 1943. He was much influenced by M.R. James, and his stories have similar ingredients - historical detail, snippets of folklore, and characters who are usually English gentlemen leading what they believe to be quiet lives. Then something intrudes...
There's an excellent essay on Malden by Roger Johnson (himself a fine ghost story writer) here:

Terrific. Had many elements of an M R James story but then I believe the author was a friend of his .

Nicely read. I love it. I wish I had the hardback edition pictured. I have a softback repro. Thanks for this.

The ending came a bit suddenly, I had to look down and make sure I didn't pause it by accident lol
I would have liked more of it, very enjoyable story.

    @ 11.20 His butler ?! I thought he lived alone ?
Well read but basically M R James - lite. Very lite . Lacking
M R s whimsical touches of humour and elegance of style.
Still....no author deserves to be completely forgotten so
    thanks are in order .
