Magnatone Style Vibrato Shootout #2 - Killer V vs Magnavibe vs Maggie vs SurfyVibe

  • Comparing various pedals that claim to do magnatone style vibrato.
The Killer V has a preamp in it that is supposed to mimic a Magnatone Amp. So I decided to compare to other pedals running them with that preamp in front. I also realize some people may not care about that, so I also did a run through of each riff without the preamp. Just trying to cover all bases.

Great review, I have the Magnavibe and I am very happy with it! I have some interest in the Killer V, but have no interest in the gain that it offers...I think I'll stick with the Magnavibe for now! Thank you for this great shootout!!

I've owned an actual Magnatone Twilighter amp, and every pedal here except the Killer V. Trust me: the Surfyvibe is the only one that comes close out of Surfy, Magnavibe and Maggie. I wish I'd taken some comparisons before selling the amp now, but the fact that I did sell it after buying the Surfy Vibe tells you something! Not to knock the Magnavibe though, it is a lot older than the Surfy or Killer V and for years was the only credible choice. The Killer V seems very interesting though, and definitely the right four pedals made it through to this second round; I had the Keeley and Alexander pedals too and neither of them did anything for me; shame as the Keeley in particular offers a nice mix of features in one lump.

I had the Maggie pedal. And I also own about 13 Magnatone amps of various models. The pedal sounded good but a bit compressed on the low end compared to a real Magnatone amp. It also added a bit of noise in the form of a hiss. Which makes sense as the effect is in front of the amp instead of after the preamp like it is in a real Magnatone amp. Using it in the effects loop might avoid that

Why did you sell it your Maggie pedal? And why not to me :D

I read the MXR Uni-vibe in vibrato mode is able to emulate the magnatone effect.

I just got one and was really surprised at how good it is for this kind of thing.

Did you run the preamp with the internal switch to normal or more gain? Mine came set to more, but it was so compressed that it wasn’t even enjoyable. The normal setting makes for a really nice drive.

Which pedal? Quite honestly, I didn't know there were internal dip switch adjustments to any of them.

@@michaelgizzi Ah, not sure on that one. I sold the pedal once the new version minus the pre-amp portion came out. It would have been set to whatever was set from the factory. Wish I would have known, I would have tried switching it.

@@TriPedalReviews I didn’t realize there was a non preamp version when I got mine, but I am pretty happy with it. I also have the magnavibe and some times use it with the killer v preamp. But I certainly agree with the criticisms of having to use the preamp to use the vibrato.

Are you selling your Maggie pedal?

  • @laservampire

From what I can tell, the Killer V sounds nearly identical to the Maggie, the Magnavibe is a little throbbier (sounds much better with the Killer V preamp on!) and the Surfyvibe almost has a tremolo effect on top of the vibrato.

The Killer V sounds the most subtle and 'amp-like' in this shoot-out. They all sounded pretty close.
