    I have well over 500 HD DVDs and have never experienced a problem. I also own many Blu-rays. The ONLY reason BD won is due to studio support (i.e. WB). They had the same picture quality and sound. BD had greater capacity, while HD DVD was a more polished product with built in ethernet port (which was a huge deal since both formats required multiple updates) and Region Free coding. HD DVD was also more cost effective as it was the offical standard of the DVD Forum.

    Great video Wes! It was nice to see your collection of HD-DVD's. The format was was a very exciting (and frustrating) time for movie buffs. I remember when Blu Ray officially "won" and I ended up buying my first player. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I found a cheap HD-DVD player and explored that format as well. I'm getting into various "dead" formats lately as well, especially laserdisc & VHS. Absolutely nostalgic for collectors. Thanks for the vid man! Keep up the great work. :)

    Well, they are both great formats, but Blu-Ray is 1080p instead of 1080i, so there is a visual advantage.

    • @wright96d
      @wright96d 8 лет назад +2

      Technically, 1080i looks no different when the source is progressive. The problem arises when something is shot interlaced because there are literally two moments in time captured within the same frame. That's why many sports channels go with 720p instead of 1080i. What they lose in resolution they make up for in smoothness.

    • @deanhowell9062
      @deanhowell9062 8 лет назад +3

      Technically, if the source is progressive, and the output in 1080i, that's a 50% loss of motion fidelity. If the output device is incapable of 30hz, that 50% loss of motion fidelity results in a 100% gain in deinterlacing artifacts.

    What is the build quality on an HD-DVD? Blu-ray Disc has an extra coating on it to make them more scratch resistant than standard DVDs. Are HD-DVDs more scratch resistant than standard DVDs as well?
    Also, the cases look more red than purple. At least, in the video they do.

    • @absolutium
      @absolutium 7 лет назад

      EPS5000 The extra coating was needed cause the first layer information was engraved at the external side of the disc so it was highly scratchable.. HdDvd had the movie inside de disk.. so the same nature of the disc protected the data.

    I’ve got every format known to man. I picked Beta over VHS back in the day and I picked HD DVD over blu ray.
    Oh well. Anyway, it turns out that blu ray was the better format. If you play a HD DVD disc on a high end OLED, it doesn’t reach blu ray levels. Of course there are exceptions. The Thing has a good look to it. I always felt there was a yellowish tint to HD DVD. The last HD DVD disc I bought was Firewall and the quality just wasn’t there.

    Nice collection. FYI, at the time both formats were viable, HD DVD was the superior format due to its use of mpeg4 encoded videos, while Blu-ray was still used Mpeg2, consistent menus across all HD DVDs, and the players were cheaper. That being said, its a dead format, so enjoy watching cheap flicks. BTW, I have yet to run across any bad discs.

    • @MrHandss

      ElfHostage blu-ray beat it. Blu-ray had more studios on board (thus many more movies were being made), ps3 games used blu-rays, and in general, it was just better because it had more storage space.
      since every single ps3 was a blu-ray player and you could get them for hundreds of dollars less than a standalone blu-ray or hd-dvd player, it put a lot of them into the market.

    • @iYearn4Cats
      @iYearn4Cats 9 лет назад

      +MrHandss Not as many people switched over immediately from DVD to BLU-RAY, like they had with VHS. The technology is unnecessary, and costs the consumer and manufacturers more money and effort in comparison to having already invented a perfect format of HQ video delivery a decade earlier. The most important thing about enjoying a film is atmosphere. That is why movie theaters exist. Inventing new products is something Capitalism thrives on, but unfortunately, it also means corporations scrapping things before their life cycle has ended.

    • @Pimpo168
      @Pimpo168 9 лет назад +3

      ElfHostage At the start most movie studios were split between the 2 formats but as time went on Blu Rays started outselling HD DVD 2 to 1 slowly studios either started printing disc for both formats or completely discontinuing production of HD DVD. Then you may find this hard to believe but the porn industry started supporting Blu Ray (porn played a big role in VHS defeating BetaMax) which kind of put the final nail in the coffin for HD DVD this is when almost every studio jumped to Blu Ray and Warner Brothers was the final studio to support HD DVD pulling the plug at CES.
      iYearn4Cats I have read your post about 3 times and still can't figure out what kind of coherent thought you were trying to articulate are you trying to say Blu Rays are pointless or what.

I know some HD-DVD collectors who check their entire collection every 6 months to pull the bad discs out so beware. Looks like the superior format did win afterall.

    @Carnage6X 11 лет назад

    I'm not being biased here man. Check the threads on the DVDtalk website and you can find where some HD DVD discs are going bad. And this is coming from dedicated HD DVD collectors. The flipper combo discs are the worst but it's happening to normal ones too. If yours hasn't gone bad that's great but it is a problem and how are you going to get them replaced when the format isn't supported anymore? Just saying if I collected them I'd be pissed if they started just dying on me that's all.

    Blu Ray won because Sony was brilliant by putting it in their ps3. Therefore more blu ray players out there. Not some $200 attachment xbox fail.

    Sony doesnt even make electronics anymore. They have other companies making there vidio and home electronics. What a shame... Sony of old is gone.

      The Big Lebowski is one of those rare cases where the HD-DVD looks better than the Blu-Ray.
