I mean every single device, from plotter to display, from vhf to autopilot, from ais to USB charger, ... both fridges regulators were killed... practically all led lights. But this not all : the lightning triggered the electronic controller of one of the two engines (we were on our Outremer 45 cat.). A lot of these sailing RUclips channels attempt to generate false drama out of trivial leaks or mechanical failures to drive clicks. @Plukky, this was as real as it gets. Genuine emergency and genuine risk. Don't beat yourself up about the tape. You saved the ship. It's payday for me so I'll put something in your cup.
That shark looked hungry mate, that was sketchy af brother! Good job stopping that leak and not getting eaten. I was transiting on a dodgy banka in the Philippines and the same seal failed , I can remember them doing a similar repair with some cloth a plastic bottle and some thick monofilament fishing line, seemed to work, we didn't sink that time anyway! Nice video 👍
This is the most insane situation captured on video . I grew up on a small sailboat in the 70s and 80s. Things were different and we spent most of our time in off grid locations with plenty of storms and sharks. I loved the adventure, but I was always weary of lightning. My father used to assure me, it would hit the rod, go down the mast into the water. I wasn't so sure, but I suppose that ignorance was a gift. If I had known the extent of damage possible, I may not have been so bold. I've had to participate in some sketchy situations. Ive seen some crazy boating things. But this situation is over the top. Your ability, reasoning and bravery is remarkable. May you have abundant safety, ease, good winds, and many wonderful adventures.
This is why I like sailboats docked on both sides of me, both my neighbors have been struck, here in SW Florida we get lots of lightning sometimes I don’t know why I haven’t been hit there’s so much my Searay 390 is low and the two lightning rods docked beside me get it? I’ve heard both ground your mast and don’t ground your mast IDK 🤷♀️ you sure do live on the edge causalities sure take the fun out
Amazing plucky sending money and love sir!! My foresight tells me this will be the most famous lighting strike story, and that lighting bolt was actually a godsend. Lol. You my Fav RUclips star broski!!!

Proud to say i learned to sail on a boat named freedom from a legend named Plukky! Balls of steel would have rusted by now, Plukky has balls of titanium.
I can truly relate, with friends Harry & Linda asking me swim in Columbia River as victim being rescued with "The Life Sling" by sailboat club members. It's storming, I'm now seeing whole trees floating down swift current, not a safe place, black thunderheads roll in, I'm in water, hooked to masthead by cable, while crews lifting me on board with cable deck wenches! My whole body is being racked by all kinds of currents, surface waves, high winds, head on a swivel looking for multiple head on dangers! But mainly looking up cable I'm hooked to to top of sail mast head, an "bang", lightening strick, huge flash of light an sparks in 360°! Down comes marine brand radio/cb radio antennas all crashing on deck an crew! Now I'm hanging out in Columbia River turbulence all forgotten, after that lightening strict! Thanks, Harry!
Great job man. You seemed calm and you thought you're way through it. I would have shit myself! Plus going back into the water with sharks!!! My god!!! Colour me impressed.

Ha. If coping means making mistake after mistake and then lucking onto a favorable outcome then yes I coped ok. Thanks for the comment.
😃🍺👍 You are the best Peter 🏆 you definitely deserve some yacht ⛵️ manufacturer’s to sponsor you.take care Mate ⛵️👍😃🇦🇺🍺🍺
I think they would look at me and say “If we give him a boat he will just sink it, let’s just go with Atticus they are better”
@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM ...and Atticus would say, -A new boat..? After I just replaced the solenoid? Never!!!
You did very well sir, you should be proud! Great to see your ok. Now, for some boat work...
That's the plan!
Very glad you're OK!
Me too!
whowwww ! - good work, Plukky !
Thanks Mr O....top stuff for commenting
Great effort! Good luck with it!
Thanks for the good luck ...I will be needing it
Nice JOB, keeping your mind focus on...
There was focus or sinking....easy choice
@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM I saw many of your videos and you are a very prepared guy. Another person in your position will freeze.... you were KEEP CALM AND KEEP SAILING....
And you video it all , I thought that would have been the last thing on your mind.
I am going to send these 3 videos to my yacht club show they learn from this.
If you notice whenever I film hubris kicks me in the ass and things immediately take a turn for the worse...I gave up after number 3 hubris attack well until it was solved
Amazing!! Advanced problem solving under pressure. Brilliant!!
What a nice thing to say...and thanks for your great support too....I am still swearing at myself about the tape ha....bloody tape lol
Not quite sure how you held it altogether and still managed to keep filming! Top effort. Keep going, Peter.
If you look I only really filmed when I thought it was all ok....when the shit hit the fan, there is not a thought to film at all just do
Wow nice work.. cool under pressure, was that a mad adrenaline rush or what, singing boat and sharks underneath..
All from a lightning strike? wow.
Well you got my sub, I’m riveted, I need to watch the next episode!
Your a champion..!
Classic thanks my friend
What, no giant rogue wave? What an ordeal! Damn good work on your part, lad. You responded to (multiple) crisis like a champ!
YEah no angry seas that day my friends at all...what a jip!
Great job .. good you share it.
Obviously we all love to know why the destruction is so bad.
Well it is a vlog so I got to share it....look up lightning strikes and what they do...you will be surprised
I’m so glad you’re ok. Awesome job great thinking ✌🏻👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for taking the time to comment
Love y’a, you crazy bastard. Your luck will turn. I posted to my Facebook asking friends to follow you and help out
I hope so Pedro, thanks for the comment
Everything will be alright!
Well now I feel better thank you. Keep the comments rolling.
Good stuff
We have sent though some money Plukky. You are essential to my RUclips Sailing Apprenticeship so we have got to keep you going. Best of luck.
Wow, thank you for the top support...I like the word essential...wow
That was a good fast paced drama! Thanks for the skinny!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My gods man you are a brave dude
Such a rollercoaster of emotions.
Exhausting yes
I would be shit scared knowing there are sharks around me. Not sure what type they were. Being in pitch black water.... offff tough work man!
There was a job to do
Christ I’d be packing shit with this one Pluckky,ya did well mate.
Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend and your kind words... maybe stick around and watch what happens next
Lol. You my
Fav RUclips star broski!!!
good on you Lee.....not a godsend yet...I am trying to keep on the good books with the man upstairs....I am assuming the position of not getting into any trouble...thanks again my friend
hey - from one Aussie sailor to another, mate.. well done for saving it. I’ve also sent you a donation - at the least buy yourself a beer at some point.
Top stuff Saskia. Where you from?
hey Plukky - originally from Gladstone, Queensland, I live in the Netherlands now (sailing here is quite a change!) . Still miss Gladdo!
Proud to say i learned to sail on a boat named freedom from a legend named Plukky!
Balls of steel would have rusted by now, Plukky has balls of titanium.
Thanks Adam....one of my Floridian friends top stuff
Thanks for the comment Tim
Great job man. You seemed calm and you thought you're way through it. I would have shit myself! Plus going back into the water with sharks!!! My god!!! Colour me impressed.
Thanks Jeff...maybe not so calm when I wasn't filming...just imagine a rabbit jumping around the place and you wouldnt be far off
When you jumped back in the water with the tape, I thought a shark was jumping out of the water.
I tried not to think about it
Great thinking !
Thanks Mr B B
You my friend are a legend, much respect!
I appreciate that!
Part 2 of 13. Keep it up plukky we love your journey
That may have been a little white lie....I think you would get bored after 4 anyway
Legend..to you Sir.
Cheers
Thanks Ray...bit of luck
Oh man lightning,a hole,sharks.sinking. youre blessed. Cause any of those could have done you in.
Thanks Sailing Solo for the comment ....keep sailing my friend
You Sank another boat plucky?!😣😣😣
God had a go but it was only a half hearted attempt . Next time he will do it proper just to keep me on my toes
bit of money sent, good luck Pluky.
Good on you Cliff, thanks for thinking about us and your great support top stuff
Peter you are the man you have been to hell and back buddy hopefully thing improve you guys
Thanks Ian fir the comment...I hope so too
One word WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow back at ya mate. thanks for commenting
Wow that was pretty f#cking full on!
I agree...and I was there
The world is better with you in it so don't go away yet.
I aint dead yet
This is so sad I hope we can help in some small way not fair. I hope your lady is ok over this happening.
She's fine...she wasnt there....if she was though, she would have found the problem in half the ime, repaired it in a quarter of the time and also had dinner on the bloody table ha
Holy crap man heres me looking at boats and thinking of making my move onto water.. this just shows when it goes bad it can all go bad.
I'm an inexperienced boater with PTSD and an obsession with living on the ocean.. I'm now finally about to have the funds and make the plunge but my knuckles are whitening now 😅🥺
haha..you will be ok.....think of the amount of sailboats on the water worldwide....but as you said when it turns to shit its a case of how deep. good luck, have fun.
@@pearlyshells2430 Not as many as at the bottom of the ocean ;)
Will do.. hopefully 😅
Your chances are very low in getting hit. I wouldnt wreck my dream for that reason
@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM Yes but electric storms, a sinking vessel and sharks are any yellow mariners nightmare. Thanks so much for the response I look up to you man. If you ever fancy a contributing/learning shipmate I'd be more than happy to sync up!
Good on ya Plukky. Murray would be proud.
Long live MUrray
Sent you some money! I hope it finds you in time to help with your needs for the lightning refit.
Hey that’s a good catch phrase “lightning refit” LOL!
Good on you Jeremy, thanks also for your terrific support in mechanics and timely advice. Top stuff indeed.
Crazy with the shark as well
Great job keeping a level head throughout that whole ordeal!
Use flex paste not flex tape. Plus placing a lighting rod on top of your mast connected to a copper cable to a copper rod that you can placed in the water before a storm helps redirect the bolt overboard.
Thanks Mike...I had epoxy and microballs so it was sorted the next day
