“That was my best friend. And you just killed him.”
This moment in the movie will always live rent free in my head. Superman was absolutely ready to betray his morals just to avenge Batman. I mean, he held back the moment the meteor was blown up, but DAMN. The fear in Luthor’s face was on par with accidentally resurrecting Darkseid in JLU.
I like it as a testament to his friendship with Batman, but at the same time, it was terrifying as a kid seeing Superman going rogue before Injustice and the nightmare sequences from BvS made me all numb and bored of it.

I ended up reading the comic book of Batman & Superman: world's finest long before I ever knew it was animated, & Public Enemies captured the spirit of that story again for me. Such massive props to the filmmakers for being able to translate the story to a different medium. People have no clue how hard it is until they actually have to do it. I love this film just as much as I love the story it's based off of, and I almost never say that about anything.
And props to YOU, my friend, for yet another excellent video. One of the things I absolutely love about your videos is your eye for the subtle nuances of every piece of media you analyze and how you draw attention to the different appeals of the story in both of its mediums. Like here, how you draw attention to the duality of Bruce and Clarks' views on the world and how well they know each other, whereas in the film, you draw attention to the slightly different role the two have in the story (how it's less a story about just the two people) and the differences in the portrayals of the characters (like how Lex Luthor is a lot more charismatic and manipulative and less cartoonish). Man, I'm such a happy subscriber.

Superman and Batman have one of the most wholesome friendships in comics; they have such fun banter and respect one another, almost like brothers.
I also think the concept of Lex Luthor as President is always entertaining and interesting story premise because before this comic came out, the idea of a corporate, corrupt, xenophobic philanthropist becoming President of the US was just a parody idea for this story; however, nowadays, the concept is too relatable, the only difference is at least Lex Luthor is actually fiercely intelligent.

Disclaimer: I will watch the video later but i had to comment first. Watching this movie was odd since I didn’t really care for the book. It’s full of the most annoying parts of Jeph Loeb stories. I’m not even a huge fan of chracters like Lady Shiva or Starfire and I knew they were getting done dirty. Plus it took one of the most interesting twists on Lex Luthor we ever had and wasted it. Lex as president while an alien invasion happens, forcing him and Superman to work together was interesting, because you really did get the feeling that maybe it wasn’t so bad having a villain like Luthor as leader since his self interest was tied up in the well being of the country he was leading. But imagine if it had been Lois and Clark using their investigative reporter skills to bring down Luthor ala Woodward and Bernstein? Or anything. Instead he goes wild and jumps in the power suit. Such a waste. Given that, I thought the movie did an okay job adapting a story I didnt like.

4:53 tbf captain atom role in this movie is pretty accurate to what he does in general as a character. Although there does exist more nuances in other material than most people realize. Sadly DC doesn't know what to do with his character since the mid 2000s.

I think having Lex be a third party candidate allowed the story to make it’s point in a more realistic, honest way, instead of falling into the childish “my side perfect, your side evil” trap that makes up most political discourse. It might’ve been even more realistic if Captain Atom was blinded by his loyalty to a specific party rather than just patriotism in general, but that would’ve definitely fallen into the trap too.
And thanks in advance to everyone in the replies for proving my point.

I mean, the post-Crisis businessman Lex was admittedly based after Donald Trump, to pretend anyone sees him as anything otherwise is dishonest. Of course, that's also applying a modern lens to things, when the comics originally pitched the President Lex storyline, I assume it was meant to be during the "boring Al Gore years" everyone was predicting. Anyhow, that's not how things turned out, but the point is that literally everyone already associates Lex with republicans. Though, oddly enough, most (as in 51% or so?) also associate Superman as being republican; even though in every story (excluding The Dark Knight Returns) he's neutral, like in this claiming it's not his right to tell people how to vote.
In conclusion, I think it would have been incredibly ballsey to have had him be a democrat in the movie, Lex doesn't seem to have any problems with _humans_ of color, although he may be guilty of fetishizing them... we'll ignore that for now. He doesn't seem to have any problems with gays, and supposedly solved the homeless crisis in a way that didn't involve murdering all homeless people. Sure, they could have had an extremely nuanced take, he's not evil because he's from party x, he's evil because he's "Lex flippin' Luthor" as Clark puts it, but they didn't. Though, I'm pretty sure his middle name is "Joseph" same as Clark's, which I'm told was a huge plot point in Zack Snyder's cut sequel to Batman v Superman.

I feel like Luthor's main motivation usually to prove that humanity doesn't need Superman. It becomes obsessive and destructive, but it's fundamentally noble. I think if this story had some real cajones it would let Luthor be a great President and have Supes learn that Lex is ultimately right. It's not the kind of inspiration he hoped to be, but he did genuinely inspire Lex to make humanity better.
I dunno, it just feels wrong/out of character for things to be on the up and up with Supes looking like The Question, trying to uncover a conspiracy he has no evidence for.

I prefer the ending of the comic over the animation. With Capt. Atom piloting the mech doing the right thing.
In the animation, he waited until Waller revealed everything. While he basically have a change of mind earlier with MF, the situation feels diminished compared to hitting the meteor.
The animation definitely did Lex better, though.

At some point, can we talk about when and why producers/writers/directors and critics all came to this unanimous decision that voice-over monologues don't work in movies? Like, I see people talk about it all the time as if it's some universally known truth and that it has never been done in good cinema, but that's seriously not true: noir films and the beginning of The Batman were better for it, and it is one of my favorite elements of comics. I agree that it is not as effective to have characters narrate things that can be shown or conveyed by subtext, but Loeb's writing was explicitly influenced by noir films and their hard-boiled internal monologues. I wish TV and filmmakers would grow spines and stop being afraid of trying anything that Spielberg or a dozen contemporary directors haven't done.

I enjoyed these comics when they came out, specifically because of the dual narration.
    I ... don't think I want to watch this.
If it helps, one reason the story feels like action figures being smashed together is (if memory serves) that the writer was collaborating with his young son, who was dying of cancer. So the kids-playing-with-toys feel might have come from there.
