Watch Prof Lieu's watercolor painting tutorial where she paints on site in Southern Utah: ruclips.net/video/HU5qdDtmnZo/видео.html
Woah this is incredible and so helpful. Composition is really intimidating to me, watching you pick and choose, and create thumbnails was so interesting. Also, I'm going to peel my pastels and get some colored papers 😊
Great example of a piece from start to finish.
The final painting is stunning, rich in texture, color, marks and contrast.
I think so too! Thanks for watching :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
You're an excellent landscape painter, Prof. Lieu!
She's the best!! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
found her channel and haven’t left since I really love how she provides so much for us to learn and do and motivates me to keep creating .I really have to say thank you
Thank you for watching! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
love the message about extra hours you log for artwork, when Clara said "time is never wasted. even if it feels that way." very important message for me right now, as I've spent much time on modelling a head today and wasnt sure about doing that 😄
Yes, that's so true! Even if it feels boring or pointless, if you're being productive it'll totally pay off in the end :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Another great livestream. Thank you. It occurred to me that maybe ArtProf could host a collective library of reference images. We have so many people in this group from so many places. Maybe we could create an interesting collection. Every once in a while, ArtProf could do a video critique of successful and less successful contributions to help us up our game. That way, we could learn to make better references for ourselves while sharing what we have with one another. Maybe sometimes the monthly art dare could be related to this project to help build up the library. Anyway, just an idea.
Great ideas! We do have a free reference photo collection on Flickr, check it out! www.flickr.com/photos/189561381@N07/albums -Prof Lieu
1:09:00 I absolutely love your loose artistic style and approach on oil pastel. This style is not easy for beginners, since it needs absctraction, a photo or even an on-site view just gives an impression and your practicaly invent your own painting, which has almost never anthing common with the original photo, especially for landscapes. I watched your chicken and portrait oil pastel videos, and there you definitely should follow the shapes of the subject. In landscapes your freedom is endless. Thank You so much for these long lessons, a joy to watch, your content is eternal.
Thank you so much for watching and your kind comment! Yes, Clara's flirtation with abstraction has come out of a lot of years and experimentation working that way, but anyone can take the first step of exaggerating forms and values and start pressing further from there! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
@@artprof I am the one who thanks your reply to a random you tube commenter. Yes, exaggeration, to a degree wher it still doesn't change into a mess :) Only the gifted can see the border. Thank You again for the reply.

What kinda pencil are you using during the quick landscape study?
Faber-Castell Durer watercolor pencils! -Prof Lieu
LOL! Not angry, that's my problem solving face! Whether I was figuring out how to build a complicated special order cake, or how to pick a complicated ticket, I'd always get this serious look.
May I ask, Professor Lieu, what pencils are you using for the thumbnails? I really like how you blunted them - it seems your marks are almost painting.
I'm using Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils! amzn.to/2Vm0u43 (Amazon Affiliate link) You can see me draw with them in this cat drawing tutorial: ruclips.net/video/IGHgsRO6Kro/видео.html. -Prof Lieu
@@artprof Oh! They are so luscious. Thank you and thank you for the link. I'm excited to watch the cat tutorial. :) :)
Does an oil pastel take a long time to dry?
Does it remain a bit soft?
By using baby oil, does that significantly delay drying time?
If an oil pastel hangs in a sunny/warm location, can it “run” if freshly made. Does time prevent that?
Thanks. Really enjoyed this vid and the tree root/stump in watercolour and oil pastels.
I have a few small sets of oil pastels that I’ve thrifted and intend to give it a try next.
Rob
Oil pastel doesn't dry, it stays soft forever. I can't remember how long the baby oil takes to settle in, but I would give it at least a day. The best way to preserve an oil pastel drawing is to have it under glass, in a cool room. Good luck! -Prof Lieu
@@artprof Thank you.

Hi, I am new to pastels, and to art in general. I have obtained two kinds of pastels, soft and oil. So when I saw your tutorial in oil pastel I started trying it out. You manage to get layering done, and when I do the same it just mixes on the page. Why is that? Are they too waxy? Maybe they are too warm. Any tips for attending to this without the mixing or lifting on the page? Maybe the brand is wrong. Pentel oil pastels. They are sticky and now my keyboard is multi coloured, LOL.
I think it's likely the brand, I've used Pentel in the past and their oil pastels are low quality, so that they don't layer, more the second layer you end up digging into the first layer. Imo Caran d'ache is a good quality oil pastel that isn't absurdly expensive, like Sennelier. Sometimes I will buy say 3 colors of the expensive oil pastels, and then use the cheaper ones to fill in. I never draw with only 1 brand! Btw here is our playlist with all our oil pastel videos: ruclips.net/video/QcdqRaOrwco/видео.html -Prof Lieu
@@artprof Thank you so much for such a speedy response. I am grateful that you agree with me on the quality of the oil pastels. The other box I obtained is called Conda and they are worse. Today, I bought a box of Sennelier soft pastels and you only have to show the paper the pastel and it leaves colour, quality counts as I have discovered.
Nice one
Thanks! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
@@artprof do you guys have a video on how to check the lightfastnes of colored pencils
Sorry we don't right now, I'm sure you can search online! -Prof Lieu
@@artprof oh ok
@@artprof thank you
Can people send you in reference photos?
Hi! We don't accept submissions for our reference photo collection. -Prof Lieu
If pastel pieces are called paintings, then oil pastels are paintings too.
You just fell victim to one of the classic blunders!
