    Ma'am it's sounding to me like you'd be s GREAT candidate for designing a Data Analytics course. There are folks who did it for a year & are now selling courses. But your breakdown is nothing like theirs. You CLEARLY have more experience & thus the ability to develop a more effective strategy.

      I 100% agree with this comment. The way she explained how the course should’ve have gone would’ve been SO MUCH more helpful. I actually started doing some courses on LinkedIn Learning because there were actual walk throughs and it made more sense certification wise. I’d DEFINITELY invest in a course by her though.

    Spot on. I am at Capstone part of course and def don’t feel ready to work as a DA. Overall, a good intro to the field and exposed me tools like SQL and Tableau which I enjoyed using but didn’t provide much in-depth instruction. Did a lot of google searches when confronted with issues. You’re right! Working with a dataset from beginning of program would’ve helped.

    Glad you don't have an affiliate link in your bio. Makes your review more credible unlike a lot of other youtubers.
    The thing is that it looks good on your cv, and when it says "google certificate" recruiters will take interest. It's nice to have on your cv, and a booster in terms of
    getting attention from recruiters, but like most jobs, you're more likely to actually learn on the job once you get a foot inside the door.

    I've been doing this for over 15 years, and I think this course is good for someone who is not sure if data analyst is the route they want to go. It's a high-level overview where you get a taste of everything to see if it's for you without a big $$ investment. Or, alternatively, if you've been away from working with data on the regular, maybe as a refresher. Those are the two uses cases where I see it being useful.

To be fare to the course, it's only a certificate. Also, as you stated, it's a beginner level certificate course. So i wouldn't imagine that this course alone would prepare you for an actual job as an analyst. I'm sure it's just meant to be a stepping stone.

    Love this video. I'm taking a Data Analytics course via my employer. What you described, is what I'm dealing with...a very high-level course. I feel like I'm getting exposure to various tools (tools my team don't even use), but am I learning anything, I don't think so. I was thinking the same thing you said, why not start a project with the basics, and build on that? Maybe these courses wouldn't feel so "choppy". I am thinking about taking the Google course to see what all the hype is about, but I'll keep it to a month.
    I spoke with a recruiter yesterday and I said to her, it seems like employers want applicants to come to the table already knowing the role? When in the world did that happen? If I'm applying for a role, and I know every bullet point in the job description, don't you think a person will be bored in 3 months?
    Here's to job searching in 2024!

    • @NakyaSherrell
      @NakyaSherrell  9 месяцев назад +7

      I agree with you. It felt like a training to me. I wish they had stuck to one data set and one project throughout the course especially since this is directed towards newbies. If you take the course and figure out the hype please let me know because I still dont get it. Also, with the jobs and job descriptions I agree they need to disclose properly if you want someone with 3-5yrs experience say that. Makes no sense how you list no experience required yet thats what you want.

    I've been working in the field for about 10 years, first as a data analyst, then as a data engineer. I got my first analyst position right out of college. That position didn't necessarily require a degree or certification, but certainly required skills in excel and SQL. In my estimation, over the whole of a bachelors degree in computer science with multiple minors, the initial analyst position used the contents from about 4-ish college courses.
    The reason I took this certificate is that it's cheap, doesn't expire, and has introductions both to Tableau and R, both of which aren't covered in most college curriculums, and which I'd never used in my career, but which lots of jobs do ask about.
    As discussed in this video, the estimated time of completion for the course is based on doing one module per week. The time estimated for tasks is much more than necessary (20 minutes for a short reading, 1 hour for a short optional assignment, etc). In my experience, you can do each module in an hour or two, and complete each course in a full work day, meaning you could do the entire certification in about a week if you've got the time, or easily a month if you're doing it with just your spare time.
    Given the time requirements to do it, the entire certification feels more comparable to a single college course, except that it's much cheaper, and it's much easier to pass.
    The total required workload for the certificate is 28 graded quizzes approximately one for each major module or 4 for each course, each having about 10 multiple choice questions. You need an 80% to pass, but can retake them up to 3 times per day.
    Based on what you're learning, you're probably getting about 25% of what you'd need in order to actually jump into an introductory job in the field, but my biggest worry is that you're just learning it the wrong way.
    The certification is split into 7 courses plus a capstone, but in my opinion the balance and structure of the courses is misguided, and the questions on the tests are often irrelevant to what you actually need to know. Instead of basing each course on a technical skill you need to be familiar with, each one is based on one step of the analysis model that you're presented with in the introduction. That means there's an entire 7th of the content and test questions dedicated to asking questions to clarify a project before even getting the data, and only a single 7th focusing on doing analysis.
    In theory, there are 3-4 courses about using spreadsheets and SQL, one about using Tableau, and one about using R, but because of the structure of the courses, none of them get as deep into those skills as they should, and while they cover a lot of great material, the multiple-choice nature of the graded quizzes mean that they're often fill-in-the-blank questions about definitions and weirdly-worded single-sentence explanations of things than actually testing your ability to actually do any of the skills you were taught.
    The whole thing comes off as feeling like you got a couple courses that touch on what you need to be an introductory analyst, a couple courses that introduce you to things you'll need later in your career if you move into BI or engineering, and probably 40% that feels really irrelevant altogether.
    All that said, it still feels like you're getting a couple thousand dollars worth of educational material for $40-60, so it's a no-brainer in terms of value.

    Your review pretty much summed up my thoughts on this course! This is not a real certification, this only gives you a "certificate of completion" and not an actual certificate (in the traditional sense). If you want a real Data Analyst certification you can do the Microsoft Power BI (P-300) or Tableau's Data Analyst course which is an actual industry standard cert. Only downside is that it costs hundreds of dollars

    As a former analyst looking to brush up on skills, the most helpful part of the course was to recenter you in the thought process of an analyst, not really the skills to become one. As a decision maker, I think many analysts would benefit from the theory side if it was condensed down.

    I'm glad somebody in your position reviewed this. I felt the same way and I'm not even an analyst (YET). I feel like this course is only good for the soft skills it provides, and as somebody who had minimal Excel skills before the course, I will say improving those was the only benefit for me. As far as the hard skills, I'm like you there is no outside accountability whatsoever which is why most employers really won't and don't see this cert as valuable. Also, introducing R to somebody brand new to coding is insane 🤣🤣especially when most employers want Python anyway. I was able to grasp the concepts of SQL pretty well though, But I still feel like it doesn't prepare you for the real world enough. This is one of the main reasons I'm back in school now. Overall I'm considering taking this off my resume, I feel like it does more harm than good.
    Things they could've done better:
    I would've liked for it to go into more depth on using Tableau, and more SQL

    • @NakyaSherrell
      @NakyaSherrell  9 месяцев назад +3

      Lol, I wish they would've stuck with SQL and Tableau instead of trying to incorporate R. That was a huge miss IMO. Python would've been better but if we are just covering the basics then SQL and Tableau would've been great. I also agree about the accountability. The fact that no one is checking your knowledge or reviewing your capstone project is wild to me. Like, how is this a certification? Also, its not very realistic to what data analysts are being asked to do. Wishing you good luck in your classes and job search.

Currently, I am enrolled in this course and find it impressive. While I agree with your description of the course, I respectfully disagree with the notion that it is insufficient for starting a job as a data analyst. In my opinion, it is an excellent course for entry-level data analysts. I understand your frustration regarding the short duration of the course and the ease of obtaining a certificate, but I also believe that the college experience can be similar in terms of retaining knowledge. In fact, I believe it can be worse, as it often takes a long time to obtain a diploma and enter the field, resulting in the potential loss of acquired knowledge. Ultimately, I believe that success in this field is more dependent on professional experience rather than one's college background. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!❤

    Instead of Google Certification, let's say a person with no prior experience studies and gets an Oracle SQL expert certification, a Tableau certification and Power BI certification. With these three certifications on a resume (plus Python skills) does this person have a chance of getting hired for a Data Analyst job? I'm aware that there are a lot of other factors that determine if a hiring manager will consider you, but do you think that these certifications are enough for a newbie to land the first job?

I know that Coursera has one as well but I havent taken that one. Those certifications go into more detail than the Google data analytics one from coursera. Thank you! It's so highly recommended and when I started it I was ??? Like... I didn't jump into the Advanced because of SQL and R, everything else is just so basic - way too much reading like you said, not enough practice. Granted, I am working in a DA related role, so there's little value for me in a beginning course, I intend to sprint through it. I just wanted to see what the online hype was all about and to be confident I'm not missing any context for the advanced. One point I sort of disagree is that there's no one to ask - they have some community forum and keep asking you to engage in it through the course. It's not like an instructor will join to respond to you, but there are plenty of people that can try to help you

    • @NakyaSherrell
      @NakyaSherrell  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for your response. While there is a community post throughout the course I was speaking more so in reference to an instructor or someone from Google to support you. If you think about it, one would expect most of the people in the community to be beginners as well so how can they really help you as they are more likely than not learning this information for the first time as well.

    They made some money off of me because it took me almost 8 months to finish 😅 I paced myself so that I made sure that I understood the concepts and processes. Although the last 2 months I slowed down even more because I became a little discouraged and a a lot distracted lol. I agree that there should have been a set up of where the same dataset would be worked through each course. For one thing, I had trouble ( and still do) tying it all together in my capstone. I agree that it would have been great to receive feedback for our work. For that reason, I’m looking into boot camps or graduate school. But I’m only doing graduate school if I get funding for it lol

    • @NakyaSherrell
      @NakyaSherrell  9 месяцев назад +3

      Oh wow, I understand you wanting to take your time to make sure you understood the concepts. For the content they provided and the lack of support available I think you overpaid. While it is realistic that you will be working with several different data sets, even within a day, I dont think it was the right place to start people off there that are brand new. I havent taken any graduate courses; however, I have taken some undergrad (online) data science classes and they mostly directed us to RUclips tutorials on Python or other videos to grasp the concepts. I felt cheated watching free RUclips videos. lol

    • @newyorkchickenwing
      @newyorkchickenwing 5 месяцев назад

      @@NakyaSherrell lol They made about the same amount of money off of me, due to a combination of me not keeping up with the courses for the first 5 months + pacing myself when I finally did continue them. In hindsight I should have just cancelled my subscription for the first couple of months that I wasn't using it. They claim to let you pick up where you left off if you re-subscribe after cancelling. I also understand (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that you can audit courses for free, so maybe people who need more time can do the audit first then move quickly through the paid version if they want the certificate.
      I could see someone like you with a few years of professional experience being annoyed when you get directed to free materials! In my case, I wouldn't have known where to even look for the free stuff if the Google certificate didn't show me. I suspected it would do at least that for me (I already had a feeling there would be lots of links to outside materials). So it had value in that sense.

    Hello Nakya, your review is very valuable for people like me who want to start working in the field of data analysis. Could you make a video advising from your experience and knowledge which courses you recommend taking after conccluding Google Data Analytics Certificate to achieve a level that an employer or manager could understand that the person has the skills and knowledge to give them a job at least as a junior data analyst? For example, a SQL and a Python course that upon completion we can have a Junior data analyst level, it will be very heplfull. Or please can you tell me in the comments.

I’ve worked will HRIS and have some knowledge but I need more exposure to the different Data platforms. I think it would probably be best for me to take a Data Analyst boot camp or in depth certification training. Do you have any recommendations?
