I completed the Google Data Analytics program and received the certificate for it in July 2023. I am finding that it didn’t fully prepare me for even an entry level job like they said. It gives a VERY rudimentary overview of Data Analytics throughout the program. I have discovered that I have to do more reading and research on my own to persist on getting a job in Data Analytics. If you take this program, do not expect to get out job ready like Google preaches.

I have a B.B.A. in Corporate Finance, worked at a bank for 6 years after college in high-level operations, then decided I wanted a career change at 28. I took the Google Data Analytics course and the Business Analytics Specialization course for Wharton Business School Online. I am now a senior marketing analyst for a large corporation and make $42k more a year than what I was making in banking, and I am remote. The two certificates I aquired landed me a 6-figure, remote analyst job. Having my BBA in Finance and 6 years of operational and project managment experience obviously helped as well. But from the moment I decided to pursue data analytics, I passed the two courses and landed my new job within 1 year. No masters degree.

I have a PhD in Physics and quite used to analyzing data in my research involving solar energy utilization. I started with this course 3 weeks ago and now on the third course in the certification. I am enjoying it, though I am familiar with the nitty gritty. I am taking this certification as I desire to change career from the academia into industry: energy analytics. This of course is with hopes of earning more and being more flexible as I see that there are opportunities of remote work with data analytics. I look forward to learning new tools like SQL, Tableau, R, etc. Also to be familiar with the language/terms that recruiters want to hear at interviews. I’m just tired of trying to force students to learn with university teaching and the low salaries.

    • @colamity_5000

How did you enjoy it? I only have my BA in physics and found that the stuff was so mind numbingly boring and the quizzes were more a question of whether you could repeat verbatim from the glossary than have any understanding. I don't think I've learned anything new about analysing data and even the tool utilisation components are incredibly basic.

I am sorry for you for being taking it… R or Python are not useful for starters. I also just finish a capstone as well, not much experience with data, but, yes, I only learned Python, R, SAS, but didn’t learn SQL or Power BI. Those are the only important things. Let’s run to get it. Don’t take Tableau if you have windows system. I would only recommend Tableau over Power BI if you cannot use Power BI in your system.

I had recently almost completed the IBM Data Science Certificate, I finished 9 out of 10, and then I realized Data Analytics would be a better place to start. So far its really great. @@GtZkInGz01 I started as a teller on the mobile support team which meant I traveled to several branches to support sick/vacation days. Then got hired at a branch as a teller at a branch that I liked and was close to home. Then got a position out of head office at their call center to get lots of experience quickly. Meanwhile I was working on education to become a financial planner. Never had positions as a financial advisor open up for 2 years, kept getting empty promises from the hiring manager. After doing the cross training program, had 6 months go by without any further communication about moving to the role. After a couple weeks shadowing the job, it wasn't really what I had in mind for becoming a financial planner. Spoke to my direct manager. We were working as an org at migrating our online banking to a new platform and app. During this I was brought on to lead a team to help members migrate to the new system. Through that experience I got to rub shoulders with members of the corporate security team and come up with authentication process and then create a flowchart for the new staff to authenticate people over the phone quickly etc.. essentially I solved a lot of problems for the organization in my time during the migration process which got me recommendations from the call centre director and management. My wife had also worked on various projects on banking conversion, so they knew my wife's track record, also my sister in law worked as an executive assistant to the marketing executive. My wife was also an executive assistant for the CEO while he was the CRO. So.. I did have extra help in getting recognized by people that mattered in the hiring process, but it was 3.5 years of hard work to get there... nothing was guaranteed etc.. I left the job in 2022. Currently enjoying being a stay at home dad. Happy for my experience in group risk management, wouldn't want to stay there long term. Lots of jaded individuals, management were all functioning alcoholics. Very woke industry at this point. Prioritizing gender/sexual orientation over quality/quantity of work. Spent 7 years there, almost unrecognizable now from the company I started working for.

I kinda get both sides of the debate about SQL as a jack of all trades:
I tend to treat SQL as a language I’ll use to get data from a DB when I don’t feel like _writing proper application code_ and I can express what I need in SQL. But I also feel it as something ephemeral. I’m writing queries that I will most likely throw away most likely and which will not become part of a codebase. The query is a means to an end.
On the other hand, to non tech people, SQL feels daunting. Like some of the hardest things they’ll ever use and when they find a useful query that works they’ll hang onto it and curate those queries.
But yeah, writing optimized queries is an art and a science. 😅

I think alot has to do with how you present it. I would look into this and maybe Comptia Data+. As long as you are competent in R and SQL (perhaps learning Python as well) - you are doing well for yourself. Spend money on a place that makes a great resume. Send your resume out and see how it works. There are many ways to get a job in DA, but how about chatting with someone who works in it? Knowledge can never be taken away from you. Money you can lose but knowledge stays so if this helps you it isn't a waste.
