  • Another classic from our archives - this time fishing the wild beaches of the Nullarbor chasing day time mulloway with SA fishing legend “Tumby” Tom Tierney. The fishing was tough with variable weather conditions BUT we came through in the end :-)

    Great stuff lads, and even better that you took home a feed of two of the best eating fish in the ocean. 😃So tired of watching RUclips fishos catching fish after fish after fish and releasing them "unharmed" - ie - weak and utterly exhausted straight back to feed the whalers. Catch enough for your immediate needs and stop. Ensures a feed for the family without causing unnecessary injury to our beautiful mulloway, snapper, tailor, kings & salmon.

    what rigs do you use

    • @thomasgowans3837
      @thomasgowans3837 2 года назад +2

      Out there the best rig to use is the paternoster with two droppers. Bottom one use the bait top one use a blue and white popper fly or unweighted six inch plastic. Live bait use 8/0- 10/0 heavy duty hook with salmon. A 3kg salmon is not too big either. The Mulloway are huge. Remember that out there you are at the mercy of the southern ocean and even a 2 ft swell has awesome power, so use heavy star sinkers to anchor the rig on the edge of the breakers at the back or edges of the gutters. Mulloway are ambush predators and love nothing more than sitting under that oxygenated water waiting for unsuspecting prey to swim past. Get into them👍👍👍👍

      @@thomasgowans3837 - I target mulloway from the beach in NSW. We used to target them in the gutters - deeper the better. Now we fish on the sand banks next to the deep gutters. I'm certain you are right - they are hanging under all that foamy, broken water near the edge of the banks - and often in surprisingly shallow water. The other thing is they are NEVER alone - if you get one, get your mate to get a bait right where you hooked up. In NSW we are only allowed to keep one each.

      @@TrailerYacht also don't be put off the bronzies, for me that is a sure sign that those silver beasts aren't too far away. They both love the schools of bait, be it mullet, salmon or tailor.

    • @TrailerYacht
      @TrailerYacht Год назад +1

      @@thomasgowans3837 That is our experience too. We always take our bag limit of tiny bronzies (currently one per fisherman in NSW) as they are bloody tasty and freeze beautifully. We get weeks worth of boneless meals from one sub-80 cm shark. Circle hooks and 50lb leader are the go, as it doesn't put mulloway off in the surf. If a big shark takes it, it cuts you off but we don't want to battle the big fellas - we cant eat them and we only want food for our family.

      @@TrailerYacht and they can keep you warm on some of those colder nights. While they usually pick up the bait and run out beyond the breakers to stand their ground once they realise they are hooked, they can also take that initial run out turn around and swim directly back at the beach. Allowing a not so experienced fisho to believe that they have pulled the hook or been bitten off. I once saw a lad lose his combo because he was "casually" reeling in slack line believing that he pulled hooks. When tension went back on the "fish" ( I believe it was a bronze, he claims big jew) it took off like wildfire ripping it straight out of his hands. It was an expensive lesson for him to learn.🤣🤣
