Just watched Picnic! A perfect film for Valentine’s Day 😀 I also went in blind and the last line of the end credits floored me Miller’s Crossing is one of my favourite films. The script is perfect The Piano Teacher is awesome. Got it in my collection Blue Velvet is in my top 5 films, but Mulholland Drive is my number one 😀
I’m glad I didn’t pick up Anatomy of a Fall. Enjoyed it on the first watch but watched it again for a film club and decided halfway through I probably won’t end up watching it again. I was very close to picking it up but glad I watched it a second time to confirm I didn’t find the film very rewatchable.
You should grab Manila in the Claws of Light! The blu-ray has an intro on Scorsese and its the only Filipino film in the collection as a solo blu-ray! It's an incredible film and that uniqueness is what Criterion is all about!
My B & N just started carrying a very (VERY) limited selection but I was able to get Risky Business, Blood Simple, and Afire. I wanted to get Pat Garrett but I didn’t realize how expensive the 4 K was, and it would be a total blind buy, so I skipped it this time. There are a few more I want to buy but I guess I’ll have to order them online
@@FilmsByColor i saw it in the 80’s and now showed it to my kids (they are ir college) and they said WOW Dad we can’t believe we still have the same immigration issues. Also the story from Gregory Nava the director Uffff. Have a phenomenal weekend bro
@@brandonrobertkersjessacrilege! Nothing boring about it at all. The whole film is about seeing wonder in the mundane. The text at the end of the credits explains it all.
OK I had to stop the video because Watership Down is my favorite book ever (and the movie is excellent). Yes, it is brutal and probably not suitable for a 5 year-old, but it is so full of hope and love and warmth and friendship! I am endlessly inspired by its ideas of community and leadership and spirituality. Sorry, I just have to rave about my bunny babes whenever I can.
Just put in a 2nd Criterion order with a crime film flare. "Ride The Pink Horse", "Pale Flower, "Deep Cover", & "Gomorrah". As always, a fantastic discussion. "Round Midnight" has been on my watchlist for awhile. One of my best friends growing up was big into jazz & Dexter Gordon. "The Velvet Underground" is a solid documentary, I know enough about the band that part of me thought it didn't cover enough. Real groovy selections, especially "Blue Velvet".
@gracemartinez18 I believe there's even a cocktail for "Ride The Pink Horse" in the Noir Bar book. Also, a fun fact with "Gomorrah" is that there was a critically acclaimed TV take on the same source material. One of the leads (of the series) was in Fargo season 4, Salvatore Esposito.
@@FilmsByColor my friends and i were talking about renting a camp site near where we live and bringing a projector and screen and watching that movie outside with a fire and the ambiance . That would be amazing!
I had the exact same reaction as John to Life Aquatic. I grew up on Jacques Cousteau and so wanted to love this film, but I didn’t get into it at all. There’s one moment with the Sigur Rós song that almost makes the entire film, but that wasn’t enough.
Also, did you look for 3 Women under the A’s? They may have filed it (correctly) at the beginning of the rack since it’s spelled with the number and not letters…
Yeah we checked everywhere, because they were pretty mixed up. They didn't have it unfortunately. We'll be heading to a new store tomorrow. Hoping they have a copy
Sex, Lies, Videotape,....fantastic choice, great movie, but good luck getting the transparent hard plastic sleeve on and off without damaging cardboard digipack corners, had to trim plastic sleeve corners with scissors on mine. Anatomy of a Fall...just got it last week, will watch soon, a rare blind buy for me. Blue Velvet...Great one, I have the blu-ray and it looks good already as it was sourced from a 4k restoration, so no double dip.
@@FilmsByColor I loved La Strada. Check out “Nights of Cabiria”. One of my top 10 faves. Such a beautiful film. Guilietta Masina is incredible. Was produced before he got crazy surreal (which I loved). Sweet Charity is based on this film. Your wife may like too.
@FilmsByColor to chime in as well, I think "Juliet Of The Spirits" might be attuned to your interest in fantasy films (from my recollection). It's also Fellini's first color film. Although also want to mention the Fellini film with Broderick Crawford ("Il Bidone"/"The Swindle") which is almost a noir.
haha, yeah I've been going back and forth on that one. John and I have talked about it, but it never seems to make the edits. I did just make an order from Radiance that included 5 Italian films, so I'm hoping to dive into more Italian cinema soon!
Lou Diamond Phillips singing voice in La Bamba was dubbed in by the singer from Los Lobos, BFI issued the 4k of Wages of Fear.
again the quality of this channel is unmatched guys
Thanks so much! Really appreciate it
Awesome blu-ray hunting trip video & haul DJ. Great pick-ups!
Elliot is right - there's a 4k version of "Wages of Fear" released with all kinds of extras from the BFI :)
Man, I'll have to do some research. See if I want to import that one or just stick with the Criterion blu. Sounds like it's worth it though
Omg! That Cinema Paradiso plug at the end is awesome! I wish they made that movie on Criterion! It would fit so well!
Always enjoy the conversations with John, no doubt do I always hear about some new Criterion film I hadn’t yet
"Laundrette" is the British equivalent to "Laundromat"
Ohhh, thanks for that. I was wondering why I hadn't heard that word before

It's terrbly overrated, I watched on Apple TV and didn't bother to pick it up.
There's really no better feeling than perusing a fresh stack of Criterions with a coffee in hand!
Ah 😂
At last a movie night with the most recommended BRAZIL!
Gonna be a beautiful party!
I highly recommend wages of fear! Im sure you and your wife will love it 😬
The most haunting aspect of Blue Velvet is how Isabella is an exact copy of her mother! 😮

Have you gotten around to that one yet? Easily my favorite from 2023!
Good film, well-made, but too boring for re-watchability in my opinion.

Oh I totally agree. It's excellent. I recently bought the director's other animated film, The Plague Dogs. Hoping to watch that one soon

Pale Flower is the same director of the upcoming Demon Pond release, right?

love Ride the Pink Horse
BFI have released Wages of Fear on 4k. I haven't seen it but the Remake Sorcerer is excellent
I suppose 🥂 you blanket by bonfire with your Criterion summer parties? 🎊🍉🍿
Ooooh Kwaidan is the best! I bet you’ll really enjoy it!! Great video!!
I hope so! Glad to hear you love that one. I'll be watching it soon. October's just a few months away.

Rumble fish is a great criterion and you need labamba if you don't have it. I also like the movie life aquatic

Do you ONLY buy Criterions during the 50% sale at B&N or Criterion 24 hour Flash Sale? Do you ever buy one during any other part of he year?
Perfect Days just showed up on Hulu, FYI.

I'm not sure if you've answered this question- have you checked out any Fellini films yet?
@@benrus44 I'm fascinated to see what he'd think of Fellini Satyricon (1969).

I’ll definitely be watching that one this October. Any other Halloween appropriate titles in the collection you recommend?

I really like Sibyl by Triet
