Malick's Tree of Life is the most beautiful movie I've ever watched.... If you're all in on him and haven't even seen that one yet, jump on it right away!
If you like River's performance in Dogfight, you should check him out in My Own Private Idaho, Gus van Sant's film. He gives arguably one of his best performances opposite Keanu Reeves in this modern reimagining of Shakespeare's Falstaff plays. Look out for another marvelous cameo by Udo Kier.
Gosh, yes, Magnificent Obsession, absolutely you will love if you loved All that Heaven Allows. I love watching Sirk with the more Contemporary Far from Heaven and Carol.
The only thing I know about True Stories is that it’s directed by David Byrne of The Talking Heads, which is rad and makes me interested in it for that fact alone.
“Miller’s Crossing” is a perfect example of how the Coen’s incorporate influences (the works of author Dashiell Hammett) seamlessly into their films. It’s also one of my favorite films. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do. “Flight of the Phoenix” has one of the greatest third act twists in cinema history. For that alone, it’s terrific. Can’t wait to see what you guys think of what you got!
David Byrne's film output of the 1980s is really neat, most of it being related to Jonathan Demme films (musical contributions, plus "Stop Making Sense") but then there is "True Stories" which Byrne himself directed. Fascinating movie.
I love The Thin Red Line. Probably my favorite war movie because it's not a typical war movie. The Tree of Life is my favorite Malick. I ordered Days of Heaven 4K as haven't seen yet so looking forward to getting that, even more so now after hearing how much you guys enjoyed.
If you loved The 39 Steps you would like Young and Innocent too. It’s a light romantic comedy/thriller with an amazing climax. Sabotage is another of my favorite British Hitchcock films but much darker.
hey man, i subscribed at around 500 subs and noticed it was a slow grind in progress of subs for a while. but your videos stayed consistent and of the highest quality. Then noticing your channel absolutely explode the last few weeks has been a long time coming. This will be the biggest criterion/Boutique channel on youtube soon i fully believe that. too much quality for it not to be. Cheers man!
Wow! Thank you so much for the kind words. This may be the nicest comment I've ever received. Totally made my day. Thanks so much for hanging with me since the early days. Really appreciate it!
Shinoda actually directed the original Japanese version of Silence as well. You'll definitely have to track it out after you watch the new Imprint Scorsese set.
I love Miller's Crossing, the dialogue is hilarious, but what makes it for me is Gabriel Byrne's character (Tom Regan). If ever an actor was perfectly cast it has to be Byrne in Miller's Crossing. A complex character, he brings a lot of depth to this otherwise fun movie
Dogfight is SO good! Beautiful performances by both leads! Hope you love as much as i did! Also, if you like River's performance- a non Criterion movie to check out is a "Running on Empty"- he got an Oscar nomination for this performance. (He also does a beautiful job as the young Indian Jones in the Last Crusade) PS. Don't forget Stand By Me!
Great to hear that you enjoyed Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps"! As someone who's seen all 50+ films of his, I do highly recommend you finish up your set by watching Foreign Correspondent. Great movie and has an epic scene that is truly amazing for 1940 special effects
I watched True Stories because I'm a Talking Heads fan ( the director is the lead singer of that band ). I don't think it's a comedy. Like you said it's more like a unique and really weird mockumentary with great cinematography. It's an interesting film for sure.
I have enjoyed watching these B&N videos. There’s a few stores around me but their selections weren’t great so I ended up ordering all of mine through B&N’s website. Got 8 movies in total this month and I’m pretty satisfied. Anyhow, thanks for the entertaining videos! The passion you both have for film really shows.
Magnificent Obsession! I have been meaning to grab that for going on 2 years now! Thanks for the reminder. My grandpa recommended that a couple Thanksgivings ago, and I always forget about it when a sale rolls around Grace, I think you may like to know that that film Naked stars (not Robin Williams) David Thewlis-who was later Lupin in the Harry Potter films. As far as I know, that was his breakthrough and was directed by Mike Leigh, who is great.
The Thin Red Line is one of the best war movies ever. And you should have gotten Everlasting Moments, it is just so good! One of our (Sweden) best directors! And I recently saw Blood Simple so would love to get that on 4k as well! Such a great debut movie they apparently walked around in Hollywood and begging for money to make and they actually got it funded that way!
Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, just got it last week, great. Had seen it streamed somewhere and this disc is the original X rated version (when released in U.S. because of couple scenes, dialogue, etc.) Has been out of print for years (blu-ray) and hallelujah for Criterion bringing it back in print a few months ago. Favorite Malick film is Tree of Life, deserves a 4k imo. Pale Flower, saw on Criterion Channel, very good movie, excellent. Flight of the Phoenix is an epic adventure/survival movie, fantastic story, yes it's great, definitely dramatic role for Stewart. Enjoyed, thank you. Looks like I'll miss out on two of my top intended buys during sale, Perfect Days and Bound, 4k both....Barnes and Noble still sold out online, and Amazon will not price match, 3 days left, not too optimistic.
Last metro is great! Anything Truffaut is great tho! Also Thin Red Line is a beautiful film and the greatest anti-war film of all time in my opinion. ❤
Great haul! The Mikado was there at that store. I vaguely remember from a previous haul video you saying you were looking for that title. I have that one, I think you’d dig it. Thanks again. You guys rock!
Yes, I saw that! We talked about it briefly, but it didn't make the edit. I had to leave it unfortunately. There was just too much stuff at that store. Next time!
You guys are so lucky. The barnes & noble here in reno took out their movie area a year ago, and it really sucks so I go shopping with you guys in your videos. Thank you.
Miller’s Crossing is one of my top 10 favourite films 😀 Not enough people talk about it I also love Almodovar but I only own Tie Me Up, The Skin I Live In, Bad Education and Pain and Glory so far 😊 Oddly enough I saw Talk to Her and didn’t like it Perfect Days is on order. Great film Own and love Y Tu Mama Tambien Did not like The Lure 😊
Love The Philadelphia Story. Do you know/ love High Society too? I adore Stewart and Grant. Re the latter: Arsenic & Old Lace and The Awful Truth are my fave films of his, amongst other great roles, especially with Hitchcock. Don't get me started on Hitch. I'm really exploring more of his movies at the moment, and rewatching old faves, so stoked you mentioned the b&w The Man Who Knew Too Much, which I watched again just a few days ago. I have a R1 (I'm in the UK) Legends set of 20 early Hitch films on DVD, and my copy of The Man Who...is in there. But, curiously, I found a DVD-R version of that film, from a newspaper, in with an eBay order of Notorious and Spellbound today. Curious. Nice to have a freebie but is a movie I already have.
Not in the collection but you should check out A Hidden Life by Terence Malick soon! I love that movie so much and hope it gets into the collection soon.
I went directly to the Criterion site to see if he had also done the cover for Lone Star because they are similar in ways. It was a bit strange to see that was done by Jacob Phillips but it turns out that is his son.
I remember loving Foreign Correspondent! Gonna watch that again. Hitch made awesome movies. I haven’t seen Rumble Fish in ages. Tom Waits cameo I think. I’m enjoying the vid! 🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥
I, too, picked up The Flight of the Phoenix in this sale. Having watched the remake ( 2004 ) some years ago and liking it, I really wanted to own and see the original-- particularly because of the love of Jimmy Stewart in everything. This month, I also picked up The Red Balloon; Breathless; Don't Look Now; and found The Unbearable Lightness of Being ( #55, OOP DVD ) at my local Goodwill.
I should note "Wings Of Desire" has both black & white and color footage. But what "Wings Of Desire" doesn’t have that "Rumble Fish" does is an appearance by musician Tom Waits.
@@FilmsByColor my hope is to one day write one. There's so many interesting nuggets out there. Would kill to write about "Blow-Up" & its club scene with The Yardbirds.
Great pickups. I love the mics you two are wearing, I couldn’t hear the music playing nor anyone in the background, the mics focus’ on your voices. Do you like Slacker by Linklater?
Magnificent Obsession is almost but not quite as good as ATHA and they both co star Agnes Moorehead who is great as Jane's best friend. But tbere was more to Sirk than just melodrama. He made several westerns with Rock Hudson ,a film noir and a couple of musicals. Pabst is one of the great directors of the late silent and early sound period and if you like Pandora's Box there's another excellent film Diary of a Lost Girl, also starring Louise Brooks which he made shortly afterwards ,available on Eureka!
Personally, I didn't love The Thin Red Line, but then I went in right after and watched it again with the commentary track. I can't comment on the track so much because I don't remember it, but I do remember being mesmerized by the cinematography of the movie, which I just didn't notice as much when I was first watching it. Because I already knew the movie from having just watched it, I was actually able to enjoy it so much more by just looking at. This has only happened a few times for me, but this is one of them.
Great picks! Another Douglas Sirk melodrama I think ya'll will enjoyed is Written on the Wind. It stars Rock Hudson, Robert Stack, Lauren Bacall and Dorothy Malone. It is shot in Technicolor just like All that Heaven Allows and Magnificent Obsession. Beautifully shot and superb acting especially by Dorothy Malone (won an Oscar for this role)! You should definitely check it out. Its actually my favorite Douglas Sirk film.
Thin Red Line is something I picked up in this month. I've sort of indulged this month and gotten more criterions than I usually do, but what the hell, I don't spend money on much other than necessities, so why not. I definitely feel like I'm done for the sale. The only thing I'd like to pick up is 'The Great Escape' as I wanted to get it, but the copy they had was a loose disc, and 'Tales of the Four Seasons'. Either of those I am more than content to wait until the next go round though. I picked up 14 things this year, one of them was big and two of the others were sets. 1. Ingmar Bergaman's Cinema: this is the one I bought last and have debated to get for years, but finally pulled the trigger. Pricey, but great to have all these masterpieces and can't wait to get through the ones I haven't seen yet. 2. Thin Red Line 3. The New World: Had a copy of the directors cut on blu-ray, but wasn't the Criterion version which has a lot more supplementals and a good restoration. My favorite Mallick film I've seen thus far. 4. Fanny and Alexander: Bought this before I got the Bergman set, so somewhat redundant and might sell it, but still a good set overall. 5,6,7. Three Colors Trilogy(Individual releases): Didn't want to spring for the box set, thought the individual releases would be a better go. 8. A Christmas Tale: Saw you looking at this one in the video. Always looking for good Christmas films to add. Should be a good pick. 9. Carlos 10 The Last Emperor 11. Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate 12. Infernal Affairs Trilogy: Just recently watched the Departed for the first time and was fascinated how the original expands on it as I guess the other two are a sequel and the other a prequel. Very interested. 13. The Irishman 14. My DInner with Andre So yeah, definitely a lot of things I just picked up because they looked interesting, a lot of blind buys this year. But happy with my hauls. Glad you guys got lots of stuff you have been looking for as well.
Moin from SH in Germany! I have seen you today for the first time with the Criterion Design book video. Now I would like to react to your shopping. First the film high on the left side in the picture: "Afire" with the wonderful Paula Beer! Also seeing the classic "Blow up" below it, it reminds me of the fantastic "Blow out". There is seen - only for a moment - the cover of "Come and see"!!! What is about the "remake" of "Cat People" with the beauty and talent of Nastassja Kinski known from the Wenders materpiece "Paris, Texas" with Karen Black's son Hunter Carson? "Badlands" from Malik !!! I see "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" by Altman! "The last Metro" is a gem. "Dogfight" with Lili Taylor is good. "Cul-de-sac" even better. "Die freudlose Gasse", "Tagebuch einer Unbekannten" and "Die Dreigroschenoper" by Pabst from the pre-Nazi area! "Black Moon" with the great Therese Giehse, who is also in Malle's "Lacombe, Lucien", which is, beside of "Atlantic City" and the also fine "Alamo Bay", one of my favorites. Sirk's movies are also: "A Time to Love and a Time to Die", "Interlude", "The Tarnished Angels", "Written on the Wind" and "Imitation of Life" and his two movies with the wonderful Zarah Leander from Sweden "La Habanera" and "To New Shores"! Try to find Peter Lorre's "Der Verlorene ( The Lost One )" from 1951 not only acting but also director. Favorite Hitchcocks of mine are: "Torn Curtain", "Topaz" and "Family Plot". I love "High Society" - musical remake and - by George Cukor "Heller in Pink Tights", "Bhowani Junction" and "A Star is Born" with Garland and James Mason. "Rumble Fish" is great: the cast (stars also Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Dennis Hopper and Tom Waits - l love his total work) , the music, the mood and the possibility to compair it with Coppola's "The Outsiders" or even "One from the Heart" - all three are fine movies. Do you know "Volver" by Almodovar? Have you seen "The Virgin Spring"? I love also Bergman's " The Serpent’s Egg ", "Det sjunde inseglet" from 1957, " Sommarnattens leende " 1955 and the best of his movies - 1982's - " Fanny och Alexander"! "True Stories" is by Talking Heads group member David Byrne - their and his music are even much better: watch the concert movies "Stop making sense" and "American Utopia" - both among the best ever ( John Goodman in Joe Dante's "Matinee"?). Wenders, and then Pasolini and Fassbinder ( here with his last one "Querelle" - but please watch "Fear eats Soul"! - becauce of "All That Heaven Allows" and the very good "Far from Heaven") side by side. About "Insignificance": Theresa Russell and Michael Emil as Monroe and Einstein compaired to Michelle Williams and Walter Matthau in later movies!?! I love "Hidden Fortress" - not so much "Star Wars". Weired but good ones like "Naked", "The Night Porter" - and "Sid and Nancy" in the background - and also - the best ever - "Onibaba"! "Tom Jones" is only a joy. The classic silent "La passion de Jeanne d’Arc" is realy one of the best ever. Coen's "Miller's Crossing" is one of their bests ( have you seen Albert Finney in "Wolfen" or - yes - "Tom Jones"?). " The Flight of the Phoenix" has also Hardy Krüger, who's character is the biggest surprise. And James Stewart in all his fantastic Westerns by Anthony Mann? You both and your children ... stay gold. Regards from Germany SH Jörg
Glad you both picked up a lot of great films. At the time of release, I actually preferred THIN RED LINE over SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. It is a great film, although I've swung imore n PRIVATE RYAN camp since then. I know you guys hated BADLANDS, but I'd give it another shot, I have a feeling you'll say "what were we thinking?" and just blame it on Valentine's Day. At first, I was not a fan of the Coen Brothers, I disliked every single movie from BLOOD SIMPLE to FARGO with the one exception of MILLER"S CROSSING. I just did not "get" the Coen Brothers until O, BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? since then, I've revisited every single film and changed my opinion on every single one. It was a Eureka moment for me, seeing O, BROTHER. KAMERADSCHAFT didn't do much for me, but I loved every other Pabst film I've seen, perhaps I need to rewatch it. MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION is equal to ALL THAT HEAVENS ALLOWS. I would also recommend Sirk's WRITTEN ON THE WIND also with Hudson (so it forms a Sirk-Hudson trilogy). I would also suggest Haynes' FAR FROM HEAVEN which was inspired by those Sirk films. PALE FLOWER was very good. FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX was an excellent film. Nice to see Stewart in more of a dramatic role. I'm not sure if I've seen TRUE STORIES or not. I'm a fan of The Talking Heads back in the 80's, so I think I have, but I don't remember my impression of the film. DOGFIGHT is also very good. I loved both leads River and Lili Taylor. RUMBLEFISH, I know I've seen, but didn't make a strong impression on me like THE OUTSIDERS did. Speaking of Matt Dillion, based on your recommendation I ordered Cinematographe's LITTLE DARLINGS, I remember liking the film, but not one of my favorites. Enjoy the films, as you see you made a lot of great picks.
Malick's Tree of Life is the most beautiful movie I've ever watched.... If you're all in on him and haven't even seen that one yet, jump on it right away!
The Thin Red Line is amazing, such a beautiful and haunting film.
I just adore you and Grace passion for movies & physical media DJ. I also love that you and her have lots in common and like a ton of the same films!
Thanks for the rec. I've seen My Own Private Idaho in stores, but I didn't know anything about it

Another fun, fun, fun Criterion haul. Groovy.
And, do watch "Investigation of a Citizen..." with "So Dark the Night", as I think they'd be a great double bill.
Rock Hudson really soared in Douglas Sirk pictures.
There ARE so many perfect days.
The Great Obsession is an excellent choice! Watched it last year and loved it!

2. Thin Red Line
9. Carlos
10 The Last Emperor
11. Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate
12. Infernal Affairs Trilogy: Just recently watched the Departed for the first time and was fascinated how the original expands on it as I guess the other two are a sequel and the other a prequel. Very interested.
13. The Irishman
14. My DInner with Andre
So yeah, definitely a lot of things I just picked up because they looked interesting, a lot of blind buys this year. But happy with my hauls. Glad you guys got lots of stuff you have been looking for as well.
Cat People rules! I hope they get more Lewton in the Collection
Rumble fish is great. Everyone is finding that one in stores this round but not in past. I need to find true stories for my john goodman collection
The Thin Red Line is a classic. Underrated Malick. What is it that you don't like about Chris Nolan movies?
Have u or anyone u know purchased the trial?
I’m glad July is coming to an end bc I’ve already given Barnes & Noble way too much of my money 😂
Just went to mt B&N for the first time this season, and it's depressing how barren the Criterion section is now.
I want 3 women also 😂
Your wife is almost as lovely as Taylor.
