I’m excited for them all except for Funny Girl. A few days ago I was watching my Little Darlings 4K and I was thinking, “I wish Paper Moon was on 4K” and now it is! I’m very happy. You two are so fun together.
Man! This is awesome! Except for Shape of Water, I already have all these films, but they're all just on DVD, so I do plan to upgrade for sure. As I was listening to you two, I kept hoping that the next announcement would be the one I've been waiting for: Amadeus. But, alas, not yet.
No stores around me had it so I had to get it on Amazon, and even they’re taking almost a week to deliver. I loved Furiosa so much!! Wanna do a double feature with Fury Road ASAP! Have fun with your marathon, Alden!
@@ConnerNielsen6 thank you. I went to Walmart thinking I would just get my hands on the Blu-ray and they had the steel book so I was like “oh well they didn’t have it for Godzilla X Kong, but I’m getting it for this.”
I'm mostly interested in The Shape of Water, Seven Samurai & Paper Moon. I've been debating over the last couple of years to get Seven Samurai, but glad I didn't now. With so many of their titles getting 4k releases there's always going to be a hesitation to get a Blu-ray during a sale because you never know.
A great month of releases and no controversial releases, not counting the CC40, because that was not intended to be controversial. Good for John to guess all 6 releases spot on. Perhaps, you should alternate. Next time, you should guess and if for some reason, John is unavailable, perhaps Grace can fill-in, if she's able. I have a feeling you would have gotten all six releases this month.
"Seven Samurai" & "Godzilla", arguably the two most famous Japanese films of all time (and a double dose of the great Takashi Shimura!). I really need to get a 4K compatible TV!
Hi, enjoy your channel! Just so you are aware, there is a Region B 4K release from The BFI of the new restoration of SEVEN SAMURAI. Their disc will have HDR/DolbyVision, where Criterion's won't, and usually the BFI's discs have superior authoring and encoding to Criterion's discs. I, like you, have a home theater and project onto a large screen so you might want to consider the Region B disc instead because the better encoding and higher bitrates will be very evident in large screen presentatios. The Criterion disc will have more extra features, however, but the feature should look better on the BFI disc.
I wanted to point this random fact out before when John asked during a B&N sale vid, but the reason a lot of 4K versions have a Blu-ray Disc version included is because the supplements are only on that disc. Look at Funny Girl’s special feature list, for example.
That’s a great point! Thanks for that. I feel dumb for not realizing it myself. I’ve definitely had to swap out discs in the past to watch supplements.
Ok, I gotta come in clutch for you here -- I promise you, you will thank me. Sell your Blu-Ray of Seven Samurai straight away and watch it in 4K. This is one epic masterpiece that you will want your virgin eyes to experience in all of its magnificent glory!! THIS IS THE BLIND BUY OF ALL BLIND BUYS. TRUST ME.😉
Did someone say Howard Hughes? Howard Hughes' place in film history can't fully be taken away with his early contributions through productions like "Hell's Angels" and even with films such as "Two Arabian Knights" and "The Front Page". But most certainly, above all of them, his involvement in "Scarface" is his most audacious. It's no surprise that he would try and create similar circumstances with his later films (fights with censors and being salacious with the film's material, whether through sex or violence).
It doesn’t appear that seven Samurai, Godzilla or scarface have hdr for what I can see, the BFI 4K of seven samurai has Dolby vision and hdr10 though so it looks like that might be the version to go for (I was already planning on getting that edition and keeping both) I really hope we get the 4Ks of shape of water and paper moon in the UK so I don’t have to import
Most excited for Paper Moon. Funny you should say that it must suck to lose the Oscar to someone in your own film especially a child…considering Ryan O’Neal created a bit of a riff between himself and his daughter Tatum after she won the Oscar and he became jealous. Both top tier performances imo. I believe he apologized and they mended their relationship in the last several years. RIP Ryan
I had Seven Samurai on VHS, then Criterion’s first DVD which was absolutely horrible, maybe worse than the VHS, then I had their remastered DVD , then the bluray……I know I’m not going to be able to resist upgrading again. 😡
The most disappointing lineup in past year for me...or longer. Shape of Water: Biggest movie letdown for me in past 10 years maybe. I had so yearned to see it after all the hype and awards, and just the subject matter and teaser clips solidly hooked me. I saw it streamed on HBO Max I think, or was it Netflix or other? Thought it was so formulaic and predictable from sequence to sequence. Over the top acting at times. Makeup first rate for sure, but that can't carry it for me. I think the 1950's sci fi classic Creature From the Black Lagoon is much superior. Scarface: Haven't seen I admit, but I already have an absolute favorite 4k of Scarface with Pacino...can't envision Cagney outdoing Pacino. Seven Samurai: Saw it on Criterion Channel, liked it, glad I watched, but can't see watching it again for a good while. Funny Girl: Saw it maybe 20 or 30 years ago, no desire to see again, not big Streisand fan doesn't help. Paper Moon: Maybe. Haven't seen in a few years, remember liking it okay, but not enough to buy disc. Godzilla: Saw as a kid, couple times more on TV, little interest now. Anyway, thumbs up, enjoyed watching you guys review and comment on the titles.
John’s film knowledge is always something impressive 👏🏽
Great job selling the excitement of this release announcement! I thought it was a stacked line up
FUNNY GIRL!! This will look glorious.
Wyler in 4k that's golden, seriously.
I was under the impression this would be in a Columbia classics
I’m excited for them all except for Funny Girl.

Yeah the lack of Amadeus is very conspicuous.
All bangers
The Shape of Water and Paper Moon: the duality of DJ
Funny Girl and Scarface: the duality of Grace
Seven Samurai and Godzilla: The duality of Conner?
Haha this is amazing 😂
@@FilmsByColorthe duality of Conner is literally just Barbenheimer
Loved seeing this lineup of films.
Super excited about Scarface, one of favorite Hawks films. I almost upgraded my DVD a few weeks ago during the Prime Days sale. Glad I didn’t.
What a great month for new Criterion!
I'm down for Paper Moon and Seven Samurai for sure! Great month and rebound from that mixed reaction boxset... 😎
I got Furiosa yesterday so Mad Max marathon next week!!!

great month. praying for eyes wide shut in the next one 🙏
John looks like a political prisoner in the thumbnail.
Almost like they remade The In-Laws with John being Arkin and D.J. being Falk like I suppose.

Paper moon and The shape of water have been in my criterion Wishlist forever, honestly a perfect month of releases!
The shape of water has been out (not criterion) and I’m not interested in
Just bought the criterion Blu-ray of Godzilla. You’re welcome everyone.😅
Thank you for your service 🫡
I just got mine in July! 😅
Guess we’re both suckers
Just saw Paper Moon couple months ago. Definitely want that one and Scarface.
Still waiting for Robert Bresson on 4K...
Haven't watched Seven Samurai since streaming Netflix on a computer monitor in 2007. Time to finally enjoy this properly in 4K on a big TV!
I've very excited about Scarface and Funny Girl!! I love those movies and they're great picks for Criterion to release!

As soon as you said “cinema’s great modern myth-maker” I just started thinking “ok so which del Toro film is it gonna be?”

No need to upgrade Scarface for me. I own the Seven Samourai blu ray and only watched once. Not sure. The rest, not interested. My wallet is grateful!
Is it just me or is Criterion doing a lot more digipacks lately? Maybe a more eco-conscious decision?
