"If you don't have money for a wheel"
For another 50 you can get a decent wheel in fact you can get 3 Xbox thrustmaster Ferrari no frills whell with pedals for the price of this when they go on sale for 60-70 which is going to give 10000% more control than this.
In fact you can buy their brand new 900 degree Xbox wheel for the same amount.
The truth is it's a horrible value for niche gimmick

The only possible way this would be worth forking out for a dedicated controller or even paying a good bit extra for jus the module, is if it had no centering spring, and was an actual DD motor with FFB. Thats the only genuine upside this format could possibly have over a traditional analogue input. Do you want more resolution to your steer input from lock to lock on a thumbstick? Simply hold the thumbstick forward and roll it from side to side to get a L/R input thats more granular, and basically lets to use the same thumb movements as you would with this module, input is functionally the same.
Its very very securely sitting in "Gimmick" land for me. And unless they do come out with some DD FFB module for it. I'll never give it a second glance.

I want one so badly but lack of wireless combined with perhaps the worst form-factor (Micro) USB for wired connection, particularly since it's at the "business end" is an instant nope from me. I'll wait for another version. Amazing idea though.

  • @cyphre

More rotation definitely seems like the ideal upgrade. Not sure about 270, but even juts 180 degrees. They may as well make a separate module for the wider rotation variants, so it can resolve the analog input easier (and no worries about stoppers that prevent overturning).
Biggest thing I think it needs are replacement wheels, similar to replacement sticks at different heights. You could definitely make the whole wheel a little bit larger, while also having some more stylistic choices.

Dude. I just got the racing wheel module and I cannot believe how much it changes Trackmania for me. Until now, the game always felt kinda “off” to me. Steering with a keyboard felt awful. Steering with a thumbstick felt worse than it should have no matter how many times I messed with it in the settings. Then the steering wheel module arrived and BOOM the game just clicks now. It just feels right. I didn’t expect it to make this much of a difference. And the wheel movement is so nuanced that I don’t feel like it needs to be able to turn any more than it already does.

You did the correct, legal thing in disclosing the free product but that doesn't mean you weren't paid. You were. Imagine if I said I wasn't paid by Porsche to review their 2023 911 GT3 RS, they just gave me a free one. Now do you get it?
Note: this comment was not paid for by Porsche to mention their all new, amazing 2023 911 GT3 RS, their gift to car enthusiasts, special and rare automobiles that make driving-slowly or quickly, on the road or on the racetrack-a soul-stirring experience... but they did give me a free one.

    Awesome review as ever!
That 90° range is really bad, I am using gyro on Dualsense for steering, and the difference just between 90° and 180° (max for gyro) is huge, seriously. So they wouldn't even have to make it 270°, 360° or whatever, just increase to 180° would make it so much better (although the more the better obviously).
Also, it is very important how you set the deadzone and steering gamma.
Unlike with thumbstick, you want deadzone set to 0 (which is impossible to do in some games), and increase the gamma so small movements give you more precision.

Wow, thrustmaster invented the pong paddle. Sarcasm aside this looks like a really cool controller that I am now itching to buy. I was worried that the wheel module only worked for Forza games specifically. I'm relieved that it just shows up as left and right stick movement. That should mean it would work with any driving game. I thought it might be cool to use in grand theft auto where you use the regular layout to control your character on foot and swap over to the steering wheel module when you get in a car.

Id like to see the wheel module slightly larger and positioned centrally in the controller so could be used with both thumbs and also made to look like a real steering wheel. They could sell branded wheels that way. Id buy them all for sure. Ill prob still buy it tho as ive been looking for something like this for years.

I'm very much not sold on this controller for a few reasons. I've been playing racing games somewhat competitively for about 10 years now on a controller, from sim to arcade games.
First, this just doesn't look ergonomic at all or seems like it does anything different from a thumbstick that is placed in the same location. One thing I keep saying is how thumbsticks on the lower position are better for left and right inputs while in the higher position they're better for up and down inputs. I've never had issues with the stick placement on PS controllers for racing, can't say I like their shape though especially how upright the sides are, which seems to be a problem with this controller too.
The idea of a slider that only moves left or right is great, but I feel like the implementation here leaves a lot to be desired. I think if they had something like the PSP thumbstick but with more range of movement (and that doesn't immediately die with a few hours of use) it would be much better than this. Just a slider that can be dragged left or right on a slight diagonal for better ergonomics would be ideal.
Ultimately I feel like nothing is gained from this module spinning around, if anything it actually takes precision away versus an actual slider.
Finally, arcade games usually have pretty aggressive steering filters in place and I can totally see this being far too unresponsive for the majority of games. I play Horizon 5 a fair bit and the cars already are on the unresponsive side, to me this would just add to that and make the driving feel even more disconnected.
There are other games with different styles of steering filters, some with none at all like simulators, but I feel like a slider would be simpler and work as good if not better for all racing games.
