- Filmed over 7 months, Prison tells the human story on both sides of the door: staff and prisoners, and the real issues facing them all. With a vast weekly traffic of prisoners from driving offences to murderers to drug addicts, the prison is faced with ever changing demands, a pressure on bed space and complex prisoner needs.
Capturing first-hand the escalating drug problem, the scale of violence that frontline staff and prisoners endure daily and the multiple challenges of dealing with those suffering from mental health issues, the series reflects the national issues currently facing the prison service.

I’m crying for James, such a waste of a young man.
It is sad 16 All Scripture is inspired of God+ and beneficial for teaching,+ for reproving, for setting things straight,+ for disciplining in righteousness,+ 17
Yeah I bet you are ...
It all just feels so hopeless. God bless those individuals who have the strength to try to help.
It needs to change yet cause it's broken you know. 16 All Scripture is inspired of God+ and beneficial for teaching,+ for reproving, for setting things straight,+ for disciplining in righteousness,+ 17
I laughed for Chirstopher Dale rioting alone, and cried for James.
This is a great documentary...
I've worked with patients like Chris before. 1000% personality d/o. Utterly exhausting. LOVED working with patients like James; takes LOADS of patience but to see them blossom and thrive was the absolute best! Sad though he did not have a positive outcome.
This is such a big issue in jails all around the world man. It’s so sad. I did 5 years in federal prison and witnessed it first hand.
I don't feel people with mental health problems like that belong with regular inmate's. They need additional care at times
isn't that a huge percentage of people incarcerated? Who is paying for this?
@pollyanna147 it might be a huge cost but that's what happens when you have a mental illness and locked up in a regular jail or prison just isn't appropriate
A lot of jails here in Canada have special units for vulnerable inmates like those who suffer from mental health and substance use..
darn right.
Absolutely crushed to hear James died! 😢😢😢😢 That poor tortured soul, may he rest in peace now. ❤
Poor James 😔 he was tormented by his thoughts. He truly believed that people were planning to kill him. So he took his own life.😰 very sad. Rip James.🥺
there thousands of prisoners like James in the system all over the world so dont feel sorry just for him.
@@davechristian7543 So basically you're saying not to care for another human?

@@brian1291 Ways to interpret the BIBLE: 5 points of GOSPEL:
- Figurative 1.) Christ died
- Symbolical 2.) for our sins
- Literal 3.) was buried
- Devotional 4.) rose again
- Historical 5.) According to the script.
- Dispensational
GOD`s expectations to us;
- REPENT!
- BORN AGAIN!
- BE HOLY!
- EXPOSE EVIL!
- DO THE WILL OF YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER!
The sad thing is that even with the right treatment people with schizophrenia are at increased risk for suicide. RIP James.
The mental health lady was fantastic👍👍👍
Thank you for letting us see this ❤
At least they save one of them. Rip James.
Great work these Responders are doing. Kudos!
NO HELP ALL PUNISHMENT!!!
Being locked-up in a cell for 20-23 hours a day is not the way a person will “reform.”
Yes, these ppl have done something wrong, have broken the law, and need to be punished. And jail is our modern times solution for that punishment. However, IMO, it is too extreme for some crimes.
I am not talking about making it comfy for murderers and ppl who are guilty of other heinous crimes. I’m suggesting better conditions for:
1) First-time offenders;
2) Criminals whose crimes are not that severe (a case review would have to be done for each person);
3) Guilty offenders who are showing remorse for their crimes and a real interest in changing their lives into being productive individuals; and
4) Individuals who have some type a mental health issue.
44:19 I know the staff did all they could. Unfortunately his mind wouldn’t let him live a normal life. I pray he’s found the peace he so desperately needed.
Beautifully filmed
Ohh poor James he probably needed more time for his medication 💊 to kick in and get the right dosage unbelievably sad 😢
But to the other one smearing feacies all over his cell and destroying everything he definitely needs segregation and court orders for medication just beyond disrespectful to everyone around him
first inmate that was horrible nails in knuckles and knee caps
Screws actually. Much worse
They do it to get out of isolation. And it works. They Are not crazy, they know how to work the system.
If the system let them die after self harm, it would stop happening. LOL
I wonder where he is now. Hope he is off the streets
James should have been watched more closely. It should have been apparent he was a suicide risk. May he rest in peace
Great doc poor blokes FairPlay to the staff under resourced
I'm someone that spent my late teens to mid 20's in and out of both and the psych units they put people in are not much better than prison. The voluntary psych unit was decent but people in this situation would be in lockdown units where I live. Some prisons have psych housing units and cell blocks.
0:45 Oh yeah, I’ve seen worse than that.
Credit to these staff who have more stress than the police and probably get paid less. Hardly any backup and still thoughts in your head when going home at night.
26:50 No one likes an inmate, or even a person like this! He’s belligerent , destructive, very unpleasant, and nasty. The worst part about this is he’s not logical.
Very sad
I’d mandate the politicians watch this
Charles Bronson doesn't go on like this!
The support workers offer only questions no answer
Christopher Dale, a rebel without a cause😆
James broke my heart😢
Why do they release him so late at night? If I was found not guilty just release me first thing in the morning, I’ll watch some TV and have some noodles and a cuppa in the cell till the morning 😂 saves me £30 as well.
Mental health is in all prisons all over
The government need to make more room and beds.
5:28 I had to look up “spice” because I know very little about street drugs.
I'm so glad you took the time to learn ❤
75 years ago these People would be in what they called “Asylum’s” Most large Cities had multiple Asylum’s on the outskirts. Where I grew up in Lancaster there were 3. The Royal Albert and the Moore Hospital can’t remember the other. Those are now closed and the patients released into the community.
They did that in Australia because of abysmal management, abuse etc. instead of restructuring them and cleaning them up,they shut them down.
Now, they wander the streets , end up in gaol or short stint in hospitals.
There is a severe shortage of actual mental health short and long term facilities.
If they had found ways of making money from asylums they would still be open ....
same here in new zealand. it's so wrong. cynical cost cutting has meant mentally ill people are homeless or in prison when they should be in hospital. but the hospitals were closed and community care was never properly funded.@@jule3480
Chris dale is a nightmare.
Where and what unit was this filmed at??
It's the spice that had him put those screws in his hands.
She may have the biggest heart, but Hailey, the Mental Health Specialist does NOT have a calming and soothing voice and manner whatsoever!! Very abrasive. Can’t see that being super helpful in the whole scope of things going on. Obviously just MY opinion
I noticed that also, her advice at the beginning was stop taking spice and take your meds, talk about stating the obvious.
i just said same!
Many of these psychologists are just nosey and like to think they are doing good. I'm not sure the how field is beneficial to society overalll.
Who hurt you people?
It should be mandatory that prisoners grew vegetables and fruit to orphanages, prisons and mental hospitals. As well as the production of bread, cloth, etc. Everything handmade like in the XIX century. Society could provide some cows and that would be enough.
One toke of spice ruined my relatives life, a class student in uni, dream teaching job, now he’s seriously paranoid been like that for the past 12 years. Wonder how it was made legal
These people have no idea how to engage with someone with delusions. James was actually fairly logical and was willing to be convinced to an extent.
Someone should have sat with him, entertained his delusions and helped him seek proof. Upon finding no proof, you could steer him towards finding proof the delusions can't be real. Statistical likelihood of a vast conspiracy, the cost of keeping it up, the chances that so many people are going after him specifically (a nobody), etc.
You would show him videos of other people with similar delusions before and after seeking help, coping strategies from other people with delusions, etc.
It seems they only know how to either throw medication at him or try to coax him into simply complying. Not that medication doesnt have a place, but you have to engage with these people on their own level sometimes and nobody seems to do that here.
All to save money the public need to be protected
he could be helped :/ and should been helped.. rip poor soul
the disinterest in EVERY officer is SICKENING
For real. Mental health issues are a living hell. Far worse than any prison...
Let me tell you, the officers here are 1000X times more caring, nice and friendly with the inmates than they are in the US.
0 help, all punishment
They wouldn't be treating them like children like this in America
The inmate who thinks he's crazy, is the best because you're not crazy. When you're off your rocker you don't even worry about it. Keep on, keeping on Brother 🤙🏼
Get more help !!!! For gods sake !!!
He’s not got many options cause in one of the richest countries in the world he’s not got much MONNNNEYYYY
What a depraved society we have become. Most of these people never had a chance in life. Born into poverty, alcohol and crime.
Can't they give James some meds to calm down
They are not listening to Chris
I had closed captioning on and at the end of this piece it wrote the usual mistakes out. This time it got it right. " " "James was found in his own hell (cell)"....
What's roong whit me ... I' whatch this in 2pm
17:40 Unfortunately there are not enough mental health facilities for inmates. There are a lot of inmates who do just about anything to be sent to a mental facility, whether they qualify, or not.
Well, they are mental thats why they are there
Because there is very limited space in mental health care facilities today.😊😢😮
They should be in a secure hospital if they have psychosis or other similar unmanaged issues.
A trama cleaner in prison
The missing ear thing needs unliving
You don't use hydrogen peroxide
Lies!!!! James the truth was told! My dad died the same way! My dad was warning everyone he will not die natural. 😢 he was right
i like the part when they dont give housing to a completely innocent man
charles and his minions don't care
We need mandatory permanent residential care, mandatory medication, no way for drugs to get in, homelike but secure. One busy, hasty, shrill voiced nurse wont cut it.
at least fix the ear
Maybe they did kill him
They give crimals priority housing 😅😅😅😅😅
If we committed sins we need to confess to the priest because we are dirty spiritually by taking a bath thru confessing our sins to the priests forgive and repent in that way our souls will be clean. We no longer dirty in the eyes of GOD even not clean in the eyes of many people but on GOD'S eyes your are clean already but if we sin again confess again. We are just only human. Just like taking a bath because no bath we are dirty if after a bath dirty again it is normal we will take a bath again to be healthy and clean again. But if we know same sin you keep on repeating the same sins I think thats no longer good. God will give you punishment even you know it is a sin but keep on repeating the ACTS of sin.
"I cut myself"
"Why?"
"I want to go to hospital"
"Why?"
"They give me medication. Can you help with that?"
Gets sent to hospital. Immediately asks for weed and speed to "calm the voices".
And there you have it. This isn't a mental health issue, its an addiction issue. They have been taught that harming themselves gets them drugs, so they hurt themselves to get drugs.
This isn't always the case. People are complex. Their trauma is often why the mental health is challenged. An different people find their own way to try sooth the pain or forget/escape it. 😢
Wow, you're the voice of reason and insight. You have truly saw it all. Experienced and held sympathy and genuine understanding. You must have a solid 55 IQ
🤡
Oh, my. It is outrageous. It is a resort place for outlaws. Despicable!!!
A common theme: starving inmates
I didn't realise our prisons were so soft.
Everything in Europe from hospitals to prisons seems more personable and less assembly line factory farming like in the US.
