    I wouldn't underestimate the power of a one year transformation. If you start out from zero (no history of fitness) , you can feel like the hulk after one year of dedicated lifting. You won't be impressive by bodybuilding standards, but your friends and family will notice the change and you will feel huge in relationship to your past self.

      I was 210 lbs (at 5'10.5") this time last year. A bit fat not a lot of muscle. 6 months later 170lbs through fasting and simple exercise. So 170lbs, 32 inch waist, 13.5" arms, chest 42".
      Did a high protein calorie surplus with frequent intense resistance training. Weight went to 185lbs, arms 16", chest 46", waist remained the same at 32". Skinfold calipers estimate me at 13% body fat

      @@EhurtAfy same story! Started with 220lbs with almost 35+ per Body Fat. After 8 months of continuous lifting, currently at 176lbs, less than 20+ body fat, "acceptable" in shape. 14'' arm, 40ish" chest, 25" Leg. Focused on Compounds, got stronger in it.

      For sure. A LOT of naturals end up at the same rough body composition/muscle mass. If I'm talking to a natural lifter who has been lifting 8+ years seriously and is my height, often their measurements/weight are fairly close to mine.

      Depends on what your definition of "big" is. The perfect representation of an average genetics natty physique is Mario Tomic. Looks great imo, but not really big by any metric.

      @@cimi93x Well yea that's true, even I get called small still, depends on someone's perspective. In the modern world (aka with prolific PEDs) naturals can't really get "big" in comparison.

    Aside from the ever important use of Progressive Overload & consistently working hard, I also think checking the ego at the door is something all successful natural lifters generally have in common. 💪

      I mean to an extend yeah but I think a lot of succesful natty lifters like to push themself to the limit and add more weight whenever possible. Thats just the mentality you need to have. If youre that guy that is always careful "what if its too much I dont want to be seen as an ego lifter bohoo I dont want to even swing a little on curls" probably not gonna be optimal.

    Maybe another thing is prioritizing recovery. For example, eating healthy, sleeping well, avoiding excessive alcohol, and other practices.

      Yep, I like to focus on getting really good at a particular exercise rather than progressive overload. Focus on that and the progression will come naturally. (Of course things such as exercise variety are still needed though)

    I think the more advanced you become the more higher intensity matters. It seems to be a consistent trend that every natural lifter who have near 10, at, or more “good” years of training don’t make optimal gains without high intensity. I think conjugate or conjugate light whatever you want to call it is important as well, even Alec Enkiri is hopping on that train now. I think RPE/RIR ties into intensity and is why some people swear they get more gains from going to failure all the time. It might be that after 5 or so good years if you’re still sticking to conventional mainstream methods of training then failure or 0 reps in the tank is the only way you’re getting in that extra intensity. I much rather not do this, not only bc I don’t think it’s as optimal but leaving reps in the tank on volume sets is better for injury prevention

    "What can I achieve in a year?" is a funny sort of question. On the one hand, it's perfectly reasonable to have a yardstick for progress, and in one year seems as decent as any other length of time. On the other hand, it's hard to shake the feeling that the people asking it are really saying "If I can achieve something pretty impressive within a year, then oooh-kay, I guess I'll put in the effort it, but if it's gonna take longer than that, then screw it, it's not worth it."

    Looking up the oldtime strongmen is always a great inspiration. They looked amazing working as a circus sideshow or lifting farm equipment in their backyard. Just think what you can do.

    I'm natural and I opt for the lower volume high output route with a 2 a week frequency (currently using upper/lower split with each session having set biases) And I personally find this most optimal for myself. But I have programmes high volume 1 a week frequency for clients and see excellent responses. It's all about finding what your body responds to most efficiently

    Ive been training on and off for years(3months on,9months off) and have just started seeing progress because i have stopped taking extended breaks 😂
    Ive made more progress in the 6months bodyweight and dumbbells, then the last 6 months with bar and squat rack, than all the training time i had previosly combined. So its very important to keep training consistently

      Yup consistency is crucial. The research shows novices can take time off without much consequence but I've never found that to be the case if more advanced.

    People should look at silver era(1940-1959) bodybuilders, that was the peak of natural bodybuilding before everyone hopped on the gear

      Steroids were created in 1935, unlikely for them to be natty, stop deifying ‘old school’ when they aren’t innocent either, considering drug tests at that time is almost non existant.

      @@Kus519 I'd probably second that. While synthetic steroids weren't meaningfully available until the latter half of the 1950s, testosterone was isolated from testicles in the mid 1930s and was mentioned in a U.S. fitness magazine as early as 1938. It would be unreasonable to believe that the absolute peak muscular specimens in the world during the golden era (1940-1959) weren't partaking to some degree. In the top echelon there's always the onus of getting the edge, being the best you possibly can.
      We'd have to go back to the bronze era (1894-1939) to get a feel for what a cohort of most likely truly natural but genetically "elite" bodybuilders could achieve.
      With the caveat that their training methodology was most likely somewhat (but not as much we might think) subpar compared to today; they might have been slightly more muscular and lean with a distillation of the science- and experience-backed knowledge of 2021.

      @@Kus519 This has been beaten to death, steroids were invented in 1935 but they weren't widely available until the 1960s. Bill Pearl did the earliest known steroid cycle in 1961.
      Honestly I think the reason people *always* try to pull this card, is because they are jealous they don't have the genetics to look like John Grimek or Steve Reeves naturally.

    7:50 this is so true. 99% of people who i know who quit training did so because they were disappointed in the results, or lack there of, after like a couple months. Think this is also due to the crooked standards and the bs sold on social media these days.

      @@cimi93x we had a guy at our gym a couple years ago brag about his cycle. Looked like shit and not very strong, and never made any progress. Just got a pump and took selfies from his "good angles". He also parked his Jeep with 2 tires on the sidewalk. Not a coincidence.
      I've said before and will again, at a certain point, if one wants to go the extra mile for absolute strength, sacrifices to physique will have to be made. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, or would I necessarily recommend, but it's fun benching people's squats.

    Nice video, i believe learning is one of the top 3 most important things in the gym, everyone must learn and improve after they first start and should learn more and more advanced stuff, if u do the same sort of training for 3 years dont gain any progress and still think its good u are probably doing something wrong (cof cof crossfit)

    DC, rest/pause or full Mentzer is easiest for me, because there's no ambiguity: go to failure, period. Also saves time in the gym. To tune frequency, I _finally_ started keeping a log, and as long as I can add a rep, or around 5% to the bar every week or two (I've got some micro plates), I'm on track. I find that if I hit an exercise more than about twice per week, I tend to stall or backslide. My biggest mistake in the past was not keeping a log. This led me to erroneously question everything when progress was no good. But that's just what works for me. Eg: Nippard looks amazing and he's a volume guy, so: Whatever works for you.

      Is this why I have found it so hard to progress my lifts? Because I do the same seven lifts, no variations or alternatives, for my 3x full body routine. I thought we had to choose certain movements and keep getting better at them, progressive overload? Would explain why my body feels so beaten up all the time, could also be eating at maintenance though.

    Great video, as usual! Geoffrey (or anyone else), how should I do my cardio? At the moment I do calisthenics workouts three times a week and cardio twice (I know more would be optimal but I'm short on time). As my form of cardio, I've been doing 20-30 minute HIIT cycling workouts for about two-three months, but they have gotten boring and pointless. What other forms of cardio can I do indoors that are short, effective, and won't hinder gains?

      Walk. IMO walking is the best. You can do it everyday since it doesn't cause fatigue and don't need to recover from it, you can do it for hours instead of 20-30 minutes HIIT, also burning more calories...

    Time. Consistency over time. Effort matters also obviously. We don't always have great workouts. However, a great workout once a month will do nothing. It takes time. As Fit Lab mentioned below, check the ego at the door and don't get hurt. Hit the training day after day, week after week, month after month and year after year. The results will come. Be patient.

    All Natties have these things in common
    They apply progressive overload
    They sleep 8-10 hours
    They focus heavily on food quality and meal timings and portions which is actually the most important thing
    If you eat good portion meal every 3-4 hours, you go in the gym and get an extra rep and you sleep 8-10 hours this will add up over the long run and you will get jacked

    As a natural and amongst all my friends who I know are natural, I have never met anyone who gets good gains (strength or muscle) doing a bro split. Especially not the proper bro split which is chest-back-shoulders-legs-arms.
    I’ve known some dudes who’ll do some weird stuff like totally neglect their legs and throw on a superset of leg curls and extensions at the end of a chest or shoulder workout, but no-one I know that isn’t on PED’s is only training a muscle group once every 7 days.

      Yea I wouldn't recommend that for everyone, for sure. But this machine is actually easiest/least loaded in that position, and it feels comfortable...if I keep the lower back flat and keep going at the hips instead ("good form") it bothers my labrums so...kinda have to just go by feel!

    What is the difference between progressive overload and just trying to do as many reps as possible for a given weight? If indeed all the advice is correct I should be able to add another rep once in a while and slowly get stronger/bigger. Why the fancy, complicated "progressive overload" terminology?

      Progressive overload is a very general concept, it could be more weight, more reps, more sets. I did a full video on it (a tier list) if you want to check it out. I wouldn't say it's fancy or complicated, "be better" is sort of basic.

    I don't agree with the way you squat. Just try 1 time to use lighter weights and don't lock out/don't get up all the way, but just CONTINUOUSLY keep the tension (for >= 10reps). If you didn't try this, you'd be amazed (at the pump, the workout, the soreness afterwards, the muscle gains). The light weights also makes you stay straight and not "deadlift" the bar (while the quads are resting).
    Also, personally I'm 37y, I trained (naturally) 1 year when I was 16-17y, and not I started training (midlife crisis) again, and after 4months I got HUGE changes. at least 3kg (6-7lbs) of pure muscle (not fat). The transformation is remarkable (in my opinion - which is what counts the most. But also in most people's opinion). I know the gains will slow down pretty soon, but i argue half a year or 1 year is enough to see a transformation (if you're a mesomorf/athletic type genetically). Nutrition is very important.

      @@GVS From my experience/in my case this doesn't apply. I did chin-ups and dips for a longish period. I could barely do 6reps and I didn't improve almost at all. (I couldn't do large grip pull-ups btw).
      Then after I started doing a lot of volume (3-4 warmup sets, 10-15reps, 12sets per big muscle (legs/back/chest) per session) which required me to use ridiculous light weights, then I started improving - in strength ! (I now tested and I can do 4-5 large grip pull-ups.. ) and in muscle volume its like this (for me):
      I first feel the pump (only if i do 12reps minimum). Then after ~1-2 weeks I start to feel half of that muscle volume from the pump when I flex the muscle. Then after another 2 weeks the pump gets bigger in the sense that I physically feel some muscle fibers raising on top of others (weird, but that;s my perception). This usually happens at one side - usually the right side (right pect, but left back-lat for some reason.. and right leg). Then after another week I start having the muscle close to the size when it was first pumped (not the "fiber on top of another"). Then the left side catches up, and so one.
      But imo everything starts with the pump.
      This is my experience so far.. maybe in the future this doesn't apply anymore, i don't know. I wrote only what I personally experienced so far.
