Top Tool Guitar Riffs

- Been working on this for quite a while now. This is really just a tribute to one of my favorite bands of all time.
All the music was made in reaper using many VST plugins and real instrument preamps.
people say Adam's riffs aren't hard to play. this may be true but you have to also remember he created them... its not always how hard something is to play that makes it worth something.
This is true
A lot of Tool's stuff falls into that Nirvana territory where you can play it in a way that SOUNDS right and can be "easy mode" over the track if you just want to play along, but if you want to play it right, it's harder than you think.
Truth…power in the creator
His riffs are easy to play in terms of hitting the notes - hitting the notes the way he does is much harder. The guy's first musical training was as a classical bassist, and that shows in his emphasis on tone and precision. His riffs require attention to tiny shifts and bends which you don't consciously notice at first, but after a few run throughs trying to learn them, you start to realize just how many different little things he's doing on purpose to get a unique flow out of what would otherwise be a repetitive riff. Their first hit "Sober" was only two chords, one half-note apart, but he somehow gets an incredibly dynamic and towering sound out of it. I can't think of any other metal guitarist who has so much intricately deliberate tonality in his playing.
It’s all about the tone
The fact that you didn't put Parabola right after Parabol made me very sad ;-;
+1 AF
In-mf-deed
@West_ I literally said you can't play Parabol without playing Parabola. Still pretty good though.
The "Right in Two" riff gets me every time
I get chills from the first note every time with that song.
I know right?
Sweet jeez
Same lol
I love how simplistic yet dirty Adam’s riffs are. It just goes to show that sometimes, less is more
Tool is one of those bands that really knows how to use Drop-D in many versatile ways. This vid convinced me to keep my guitars in Drop-D.
I think Adam originally used drop D to play power chords faster but then kept the tuning the same and that's why he writes in drop D now
@@demonguysayshi2666 he said in an talk he originally liked it because the lower tuning sounded more evil or something like that
@@coopergoss350
Nah, I think it's for the power chords, because if he wanted to tune lower then he would've used D standard. Drop d is basically a slightly lower standard tuning. You still have about 80 percent of the same notes as standard tuning in drop d
@@demonguysayshi2666 I can see that being part of the reason (undertow songs are fast, stereotypical drop d songs) but the main reason he used drop D in the first place he was trying to play metal songs in standard then found out the reason for their kindof evil sound and why he couldn’t play them right was drop d tuning. I’ll try and find where he said it. Drop d is a better tuning either way though (minus a lot less open chords)

I can't help, but in my opinion, Schism has the best riffs and best overall feeling. It's just so eerie, sad and beautiful at the same time. Untouchable.
It's like going to anothet dimension!
That clean riff he played in this video from schism is what convinced me to get into Tool. Never gets old
0:00 Tool - Jambi
0:16 Tool - Parabol
0:38 Tool - Stinkfist
0:50 Tool - Forty Six & 2
1:38 Tool - Lateralus
2:04 Tool - The Pot
2:50 Tool - Right in Two
3:12 Tool - Aenima
3:29 Tool - Schism
4:20 Tool - Vicarious
4:42 Tool - Prison Sex
fMuIcNkD you don't even need to know the songs cos you already do lol
what a god
Can someone please confirm what band these songs are by?
Vicarious is my favorite Tool song for some reason!
Ænima
That right in two progression was chill-inducing! Great tone and effects on that one
aenima riff sounded pretty close too
I love how Justin shits on how you supposed to put your fingers on a bass.
most of his riffs are like that.
you don't tell a man how to touch his girl.
I tried doing the reccomded technique for it. So fucking hard lmao
real shit😂🙏
This is a perfect example of how important Justins bass tone and playing style is to the Tool sound. Great video after all.
The pot is nothing without bass
joey novack Definitely. One of my favorite things about Tool is not only that Justin's bass can actually be heard, but that it tends to play a central role in a lot of their songs
that's the beauty of a 3-piece band like Tool, or Sabbath. if you've got the chops, you can really shine through and be a driving force
Mnolife But Tool isn’t a 3 piece band...
Justin's tone on that track is fire
@@jbasti227 I got to see them play their new stuff up close, and the song Invincible has a badass breakdown of just Justin and Danny. It was absolutely one of the most intense things I've ever heard.
No ones gonna mention Eulogy not being on here? One of my favorite TOOL riffs
One of their most underrated songs
@@stratussquall No it isn’t. Underrated? How? Why does everyone just throw around underrated for everything? It’s considered one of their most popular songs by Tool fans.
Right In Two never gets enough cred
0:39
This is a crime against humanity
this is shot really well. what camera do you use
Ira not only the camera, is the lighting, the cinemátic style, and the color correction + great audio
Yo jamie
@@moohmachtdiekuh my guess is a tele at around 150-200 mm (which camera isnt super important, tho Cnon has great lenses) with spot lighting to get it bright enough for the plate, then darkening in post.
We need an update video with the new album out.
Can’t ignore the BIG riff in Pneuma!
Can't also ignore the long dirty ass riff in 7empest!
Can’t ignore the bass in the title track
Pneuma, Descending and Fear Inoculum are my top 3 but Culling Voices really doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. I always listen to each album all the way through to catch all the gems I might skip if I listened to individual tracks.
DUN-DUN DUH-DAH DAH-DEH DEH-DUH
Tool is the Pink Floyd of our generation. Timeless musicians.
I think that Forty Six & 2 is the easiest to learn by muscle memory, am I alone on this one?
+Wizardly Vlogs agreed. it's not that bad when playing stand alone guitar.
man but that one fucked our band so hard haha.....all four of us literally sat down and started drawing the beats out.......the drummer gave up eventually though....
one more thing: it's not easy to EQ the band to make it sound good.....that was another frustrating part. but anyway i enjoyed playing along just me a lot
Yeah. I agree. It took forever to learn schism for me though. Then came Vicarious.... 1 1/2 years later... Still can't get the intro and outro down
+Wizardly Vlogs Oooooh the joke...
+Wizardly Vlogs It is pretty easy to get the hang of, but getting it absolutely perfect is a little more difficult.
as per the notes of the song of tool they are not hard to play. the timing always fucking gets me.
prison sex is underrated
It has to be one my favoirites
...I read that out of context...
Very poor choice of words
I love that song. Definitely top 20 TOOL songs.
Diego Gianoli 😂
I saw Adam Jones at a VIP ticket holders event demonstrating the intro technique to Jambi. From my memory and from about 10 feet away, I saw him explain that he rakes his fretting finger down the 6th, 5th and 4th strings creating a triplet. Or as he calls it in this recording of him talking, a "Triplet pull-off". Here's a link to a recording of one of those VIP presentations he did: ruclips.net/video/wJUL-lFmAk0/видео.html
Would love to know your thoughts on this. I'm thinking this is one of guitar's mysteries until there's a video of Adam doing it on video for the world to see. I've yet to see anyone that includes the 4th string in that opening Jambi riff.
The guy in this video does it.
The fact that Third Eye isn't in here is a crime, but nice work
Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days are also missing. The WfM intro gives some chills.
Grape Flavored Antifreeze The third eye riffs are great, but the focus on the guitar in that song are the mindblowingly atmospheric solos.
Rosseta Stoned
Does anyone want to think about Triad?
Male Butterfly it pisses me off how nobody cares about that song
The Vicarious riff is so damn powerful. I love the intro riff to Cold & Ugly too. And the chorus riff on Swamp Song
this video with this riffs makes me feel mesmerized, every time I see it I see it complete
I love the format of these videos and how they're edited. this video made me learn all these beefy riffs, I want more :')
Jambi riff is my favorite. The very beginning of the song and the middle part.
This is probably my favourite guitar video ever. I love both audio and visuals. You should come back dude!
I've never heard the riffs so clear and perfectly. Fantastic work mate, as well as your choice in music.
The final riff in Vicarious, the one with triplets, is the most epic imo.
toolgasm
I don't know jack shit about guitar playing except that I like it a lot. cant stop listening. Thanks!
im just like you before! but now I play guitar! im still struggling with basic scales though
Keep at it dude! the more you do the easier it gets!!
No H? Come on, man!
Lukas M easily one of my favorite songs.
H?? Didn’t hear that alphabet for a long time
@@taufiqanas2919 I see what u did there
I think jimmy should have made this list extremely underrated Adam riff
Glad you put Prison Sex at the end there. Had me wondering where the love for the Undertow album was. Prison Sex is one of my favorites but I'm also partial to Swamp Song. It's not the most technical riff, but it's so damn catchy.
ChirpingMatt I love swamp song
Tempest probably belongs on this list now. Just an objectively awesome Adam Jones riff.
A riff? The song has 500 fucking riffs😂😂😂
@@mortezazoozani9186 lol truth, the first one
Legendary, Cheers to my beloved guitarist of all times!
That was badass man. I've been going over 46 & 2 on bass and guitar again since I learned it in my youth. It gives me a whole new respect for Tool as a more experienced player. Very nice nuance with the harmonics and the timing is impeccable. That bass tone though... very sweet man.
Your tone is fucking rad
Anakin Hunter I agree, I want to contact him and ask him for a list of what gear he uses.
I’ve always loved that “Jambi” pull off!
I REALLY LOVED the way you blended what the lead and the bass were doing at the same time! This was awsome! As a tool fan of nearly 2 decades, this is just awe inspiring to me. I (sorta) play guitar and the pedals and setting all sound like Japanese to me, but I one day hope to be able to pull off a version of this! Well done!
That transition into stinkfist tho. Fucking beautiful.👍🏼
Tool and filmmaking are two of my favourite things combined! You are very talented! would love to see a whole cover of a Tool song!
Awesome
Really like how the video was shot, all about the guitar and the music.
I’ve been watching this video since freshman year and I still can’t find a better video that beats this. Fucking awesome video edit.
thank you so much
REALLY well done from every aspect.
What a cool thing to see the bassline like this!
The ending riff at the end of The Pot is one of their bests.
Right out of the gate.! Playing it the way it’s played. Amazing. If said anything else it would be an essay.
The quality of your videos (both audio wise and video quality) go so unappreciated. I really wish your fanbase was larger and your videos were more noticed, cause they're all so awesome!
Tool music on guitar will help your rhythm on guitar got to practice there music the odd time riffs are crazy but it's still badass
Not only are you a super talented filmmaker, but you are also a talented guitarist!!
Amazed
I don't know what's more impressive: your guitaring or your filming. Great video, you obviously put a lot of effort into these, and its a shame more people havent seen all your vids!
This has to be the best video on RUclips.
How did you reach such a perfect guitar effects from Adam Jones? Did you buy their sound library?
This is the best cover video of a song I have ever seen. Good job. Your camera technics are very talented
You Sir have My Respect
Ænima is actually played by pulling off the drop D E chord. There’s no pick usage except for the one note on the D and G strings.
Aenema, not Aenima.
love the sound, especially in Parabol
Beautiful.
Extremely well shot. One of if not they best I’ve seen yet. Great job 🤘🏼
Amazing work, The visual and sound are incredible. And these riff's.... you nailed them so well they sound completely legit tool! best covers I've ever seen.
You have some gorgeous lighting going on in this video! Great work.
Very well done but...
I'd have a hard time puting any Tool song not in the top.
Jones really pulls off on the A as well for the intro in Jambi? I think you showed me something.
I was trilling on the E(drop d) for the same effect all this time.
U might already be familiar with him but if ur confused about Jambi check out this axeofcreation guitar lesson page. The guy is awesome and knows what he's doing and he has almost 20 full tool lessons plus other single riff and bassline lessons lol
Drew Litton
Yeah I've recently subbed to him, that dude does know his shit.
this is really well done, you captured their sound so well
So Awesome! You know it's talented guys like you that need to partner with great signers to form more great bands like Tool and Perfect Circle!
sweet as candy
Nice riffs choice, and super slick production!
like the cinematography here
I love the lighting in this really good!!
well done!! I love the camera angles and the lighting!
Seriously, that might have been the quickest 5 mins of my life. Brilliant!
Just awesome!
Whoooooo!!!!! Awesome!!!! Really good work!
HAD TO WATCH THAT OVER AND OVER!! NICE WORK BUD!! GREAT SOUND, TIMING, TONE ETC. NOT TO BE GREEDY, BUT MORE PLEASE!!! TOOL IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL. MADE MY 7th SHOW IN AUSTIN IN MARCH.
i enjoyed this SO MUCH, thanks man!
Any chance of you doing the full songs with that same split cam for bass and guitar??
absolutely amazing sound. thanks
this is sick. awesome job, man. these are killer riffs
46x2 is a fucking magic, the whole song.
i didn't want this video to end... :(
purely amazing
This is seriously amazing dude, well done.
That was really cool man. Excellent work! Wow!
Must avert ears... to much epic-ness crammed into 5 minutes!
Very nice duplication of these riffs!
Great vid, nice collection of riffs and very nicely shot! Your Pot is slightly off, he's meant to return to a flat semitone above the root before returning to the root. There were some other minor things, but this is the one that stood out.
Great job 👍🏻 Well done, I enjoyed that. Can tell a lot of effort went into making the video.
Simply,WOW! ❤ It. Great Job I ❤ Tool Just For Those Amazing Riffs. And Some Other Artist's As Well. Wish I Could Play Like This Some Day :)
Clean demonstration. Rock on 🤘
Great Job. TOOL is on another level!!
Amazing, truly magnificent
I like it. The only thing I found odd was that you didn't do the intro to Vicarious and instead chose the next, heavier. That intro riff is one of those quintessential Tool styles.
Incredible work!
This is just fucking INSANE. Top work sir!! \m/
I love your tone dude.
Hell yes! Amazing fretwork!
absolutely stunning man... great job!
I urge to listen to Tool now
Congrats sir
What a fantastic video!!! And your guitar skills!! Wow!! Awesome! Thanks for creating this 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I must agree. It's pleasure to watch and listen to your videos ;-)
Such tastly licks!
