I recently made a vampire character who joined Volkhar. When walking down a path with Serana, I came across a group of 3-4 Vigilants who were attacking a lone vampire mistwalker. It was funny because I expected the vampire to be on my side and the Vigilants to be hostile but it was the opposite; and so Serena started attacking the vampire mistwalker too. But then out of nowhere a group of Dawnguard enters and start attacking Serana and I. Because the Vigilants were technically unhostile to us, now THEY start fighting the Dawnguard. Unpredictably though, Vigilants end up defeating the Dawnguard. Finally after it was all over, the Vigilants approached me and Serana and told us of their holy mission in hunting Daedra and other abominations who prey on mortals.

While the Dawnguard is an actual military force purely focused on hunting vampires. If the Dawnguard had to fight a surprising assault from a Daedric force they could be caught in the same situation as the Vigilantes were.

KingMilkToast would they tho? The Dawnguard have the means to detect Vampires in their presence which makes it impossible for a vampire to slip in the Dawnguards ranks. But a Daedric cultist would be able to and once they get inside Fort Dawnguard they could open a portal to oblivion in the middle of the night. Doesn’t really matter that Dawnguard has a better base if all their defences can be ignored. And further more their weapons and armour albeit better than that of the vigilantes are designed to fight Vampires and the undead. Dawnguard soldiers train to fight purely vampires they would have no experience or knowledge to properly combat a Daedric threat. The Vigilantes have multiple branches across Tamriel and have seemingly existed after the Oblivion crisis 200 years before Skyrim so they must have been doing something right for being a “Policing” force against “all things evil”. While the Dawnguard are a faction that failed once before in the past and only focus purely on killing Vampires as a “military order”. These Factions are VERY different from one another and have different focuses than each other.

I kinda wish there was a _“United against Daedra, Vampire and Werewolf”_ faction encompassing maybe The Vigilantes of Stendarr, Dawnguard and Silver Hand, the upsides of each faction could help with the downsides of each other. For example, the Vigilantes aren’t skilled vampire hunters, therefore the Dawnguard would be perfect to make up for that weakenss, or maybe the Dawnguard and Vigilantes don’t know much about Werewolves, therefore the Silver hand would specialize in such a enemy... and like Overlord said, Dawnguard might be infiltrated by a daedra worshiper/cultist (especially since Molag bal created vampires, I’m certain he’d want to go after Dawnguard) therefore the Vigilantes would easily root out the cultist (in theory.. I don’t actually know how well they do this, but for the lores sake we’ll say they’re really good at weeding out daerda worshipers/cultists).

@Ifrit 13x actually Skyrim is pretty armor friendly when it comes to mages, armor doesn't give any penalty to your magic abilities, Neverwinter Nights 2, put armor feats out of all magic classes except clerics and bards, and even if you spend extra xp points to get those feats they give you heavy arcane spell failure penalties when you're wearing armor. In Skyrim however you can cast any spell you want without any penalty while wearing a full set of ebony armor. Not that i'm complaining i like the idea of wearing armor while being a mage.
P.S: Why should paladins wear robes? They are just high ranking knights.

Isran was right about the Vigilants being weaklings, yeah sure he can be suspicious and paranoid especially around Serana but he was justified that the Vampires were a legitimate threat that needed to be dealt with.
The Vigilants were weak with no real combat training or efficient gear to fight against Daedric threats like Werewolves and vampires, I think even the college of WInterhold is much more competent because most of them are skilled mages.
The Dawnguard are smaller in numbers but are much more capable in fighting the vampires with their own specific armor and weapons to deal with such a powerful threat.

The Vigilants of Stendarr emerged after the Oblivion crisis, they took it on themselves to hunt Daedra and daedra worshippers to prevent another Oblivion crisis from ever rising... meaning they were more like witch hunters than actual vampire slayers like the Dawnguard. The likes of Werewolves and Vampires were secondary targets at best, due to being derivative of daedric influences, but because of their fixation with the Oblivion Crisis, the vigilants preferred to target Cultist covens rather than eliminate the actual monsters.

Funny thing about Justice and Mercy. They are opposites. To be only just, you cannot be merciful for anything, no matter the minority of the infraction. To be only merciful, you cannot pass judgement for anything, no matter the crime. It is in being Good that a deity can combine these two disparate qualities effectively. Justice and Mercy are not ends in and of themselves, therefore.

It is possible for mercy and justice to co-habitate if you employ some wisdom. I watched this video because there is like an our ago, I was heading to Meridia's temple (I have Wintersun - Religions of Skyrim mod and wanted to be a follower of her religion).
Just after I was praying her, heading off to Solitude (doing Potema quest, needed Meridia's powers because on Legendary with some difficulty mods Draugr can be pretty hard to deal with), 2 Vigilants of Stendarr was on my way. I talked to them, by habit to talk to every NPC on the road, and they told me they know I have some daedrics artifacts on me (Dawnbreaker and Azura's Star are the only two I have). When I refused to give it to them, they attacked me.
Okay so, for context I'm with Lydia and Aela as followers. I did the Companions questline (and I am a not cured, yes), and I wield Dawnbreaker.
So, 2 vs 3 to begin with, but yeah Skyrim doesn't take followers in account for those kind of situations, but even without it, I'm being known for being the leader of the Companions. They know I'm the champion of Meridia, who is absolutely against undead and things like that. Maybe they even know I'm Azura's Champion too, and I'm the dragonborn. There is absolutely no reason to attack me. Even if they want to follow their ideas of purity, they are against undeads too. I killed so many vampires, so many Draugr, and I have a weapon specialized in this, from one of the only "good" daedras.
It's just stupid choice by Bethesda (because when they talked to me it was in French, my game is in French and all my mods is in English, so it's vanilla the thing where they attack you because you have some daedrics artefacts, or Cutting Room Floor, who restore cut content, restore it in French because my game is in French idk), or an oversight. But if I consider this "canon", it's just pure stupidity.

@@ellisbarnett0292 They could have just as easily run out of time. A game isn't completely finished coding-wise at the snap of your fingers. It can easily take two years to make a simpler game. If you rush coding, you will just wind up complain about how they rushed a game that is far glitchier than Superman 64 or blander than ET for the Atari so that they could make a quick and easy buck. That's not just me assuming. It has happened before and a quick Google search can prove it.

The trouble with religious tolerance in Tamriel is that the deities there are unquestionably real, and having mortal worshippers gives them power and agency in the world. If Azura is your declared enemy than any Azura-worshipper you find is an active agent of that enemy, regardless of their temperament or actions.

Thank you for doing this video, here are a few more reason's they are idiot's
    1) They are horribly under equipped for there job: they run around in robes and yet use only basic restoration and alteration spell's. When fighting they attack with only blunt iron and steel weapons to fight, they do not have shield's, bow's or any type of attack magic, they don't even have any turn undead or banish spell's to help them.
    2) They tend to trust random stranger's: The member you meet in Markarth that recruit's you (the first well armed individual he meet's) into helping him raid a house he suspect's hold's a daedric cult, he does this without even checking if your a member or not. Likewise you can find dead Vigilante's that where murdered by vampire's that they probably approached while thinking they where normal.
    3) They are horrible at there job's: They couldn't trained these guy's past basic spell and weapon use because almost every time you see Vigilant's in action they either die quickly, get brainwashed or break under mental-strain, i remember seeing these guy's get decimated in a fight with a single Flame Atronach. On top of this they are way too aggressive to the point of casting even Mage-light on one is enough to provoke them.
    4) They left there base defenseless: While sure there main base is manned by group of poorly armed member's they still seemed to of done nothing else to defend the building, there where no fence's, watch tower's, or anything to defend them from a incoming attack from . . . oh i don't know a pack of vampire's.
    5) They don't seem to know anything about there enemy's: This might be the worse of all, they want to fight daedra and other monster's, yet they don't seem to know how to fight them (evident by there lack of preparedness), they seem to think they can just lock up the daedric artifact's while not knowing there respective prince's can call them back at any time (except apparently nocturnal), and they underestimated VAMPIRE'S of all thing's. Say what you will about the other monster hunting groups of Skyrim but at least they know how to fight what they hunt.
These problem's are inexcusable for a organization that has been around for 200 year's like they claim to be.
