I wish I had seen this video last year, would have saved me about 100 dollars in a new fork! Awesome job, I will be showing this to people with steerers too short.
I just bought a new fork online but steerer was too short. Not happy at first then I found this video. I'm super happy. Now I've ordered a stem adaptor and Hope Head Doctor. Five star to you.
Thank you so much for this one! I hope this works well with my SR SunTour DuoTrack 7007 Suspension fork for trail riding. Luckily my steerer tube is CR-MO so its going to hold up really well on the trails. Thank you once again!
The only thing that I would do differently would be to use thread lock locktight. This is so that with all the vibration that go's through the bike nothing can work loose over time! Great video thank you.
This seems like a great idea but the Hope Head Doctor would not fit inside the quill riser I purchased. Up to that point, it was going great. I tried everything nearly ruining my fork. What is the precise brand of quill stem that will work for the Head Doctor? Thanks.
Try to remove the O-ring (black rubber band) from the Hope Head Doctor, you’ll see the gap of the expander, cut out and expand the gap a little more, it should shrink the expander a little bit so you could then slide it into your quill riser a little more easier.
@@DanyoSports I am now zero for 2 on finding a quill extender that will fit the Hope Head Doctor. Just ordered the Zoom Q-2 22.2 from Jensen and it has VERY thick walls so it was worse than the last one. Not even close to fitting in. Is there a specific quill extender brand that we know will work? Would really like to try this, but not sure what to look for. Thanks.
Sorry to hear that, I understand how frustrated it is to have 2 extenders not fitting the Hope Head Doctor. I suggest you to install a regular star nut, that way you don’t have to buy a third one, it’s more flexible and it would fit into your extender. If not, grind the inside wall of the extender, make it more room to fit the Hope Head Doctor. The brand name of my extender is Upanbike and you can get it from Amazon.
DanyoSports Thanks again. I did buy a star nut and cap so hopefully that will do the trick. If anybody needs a slightly beat up but still functional head doctor, just let me know. 😊
Sick video mate, however I was wondering if this is safe to do on a mtb? I believe it’s safe just for general cross country trail riding, but what do you think it’s capabilities are when I do small jumps with this steerer extender?
Thanks, the extender is safe as long as it is clamped to the steerer tube, riders rode these on their MTB in the 90’s, they are as strong as the threadless stems in the old days.
Don't wish to ever remove extender? Ok! Scuff thinner end of extender, WELL. Butter with JB•Weld. Use hex-head long 8mm bolt (grade 8 or 10), with Loctite. Allow at least 24 hours to set before installing star-nut and mounting your forks. Extender is not going to loosen or slip.
You can get it here: www.probikekit.ca/bicycle-handlebars-stems/profile-design-converter-1-inch-quill-steerer-to-1-1-8-inch-threadless-stem/10770283.html
Hey bro please help me out here i do have a 1inch fork but threaded but its 7 inch long while my steer tube is 7.5 or 8 inch long can i do the same you did or do you have any idea and i do love your videos
If you couldn't find the M8 bolt, use a 1/4" x 4" screw/bolt, insert it into the flange nut and wedge then screw a nut at the end to tighten it down. The idea is to tighten the wedge on the extender.
Release the expander, find a 2” tube with the same diameter of the extender, put it on top, insert the stem bolt and cap and then tighten it, it should extract the Hope Head Doctor.
You can buy all these parts from JensonUSA: Zoom Quill Stem Adapter: www.jensonusa.com/Zoom-Q-2-Q-5-Stem-Column-Adapters Hope Head Doctor: www.jensonusa.com/Hope-Head-Doctor
Very nice tutorial, I have now extended my fork in exactly the same way. Above the stem with the Head Doctor everything is correct and it holds without problems. Below the stem, however, the adapter in the steerer tube seems to shift because the headset loosens after every ride. Has anyone had the same problem and was able to fix it? best regards
Quill stems will often move slightly inside the steerer even when the wedge/cone is tight, it's a basic fault in their design that the top of the quill is a sliding fit and more often loose than tight, especially if the quill is painted. You could try using something like Loctite 603 to eliminate this movement (you'll have to remove all the paint to make the Loctite cure properly, or you could maybe just use ordinary CA "superglue" on the painted surface). There may also be movement between the extended steerer and the top bearing conical washer, so glue that on too once it's adjusted. This is a useful hack but it's probably not going to be as rigid/reliable as a single piece of metal of the correct size. You pays your money ...
You're not going to be able to torque down a philiips head screw tight enough to hold the extension into a steerer tube. You're going to get someone hurt with this advice. At least use a hex head bolt if you have to. Do not use a philips head screw if you value your safety!
I wish you would show where to find M8 short bolt. M8 bolt is already short. So it should have been M8 "long" bolt. It is hard to find a fully threaded version of it. Also, your M8 bolt is allowed to screw in with bunch tools. Many M8 bolts even can not be comparable with a screwdriver.
There are many options, if you couldn't find the M8 bolt, use a 1/4" x 4" screw/bolt, insert it into the flange nut and wedge then screw a nut at the end to tighten it down.
Yes, it is the same adapter with the same fork, all I did in this video is to clamp the adapter into the steerer tube and then put in a star fanged nut.
So if IAm an inch n a half shy my steerer tube coming threw the neck- of my bike then get a quill n do this????some bike guy told me it would not work- funny/ looks like u made it work- he wanted me to buy new forks ! What a rat!!!!!
I wouldn't do this hack for a paying customer because it's never going to be a proper fix, but I might use it on one of my bikes and watch it carefully.
The problem with doing this is that the thing you have stuffed down the tube could fail by changing shape or shattering, or anything that causes the thread to fail, thus causing the steering column to fail. Pretty dangerous. Should not be used for "big hit" or trials riding.
You really should not touch that part of bicycles - your videos show that you are not able to understand what you are doing. You endanger yourself and people surrounding you or using bikes you have manipulated. Stop doing that!

Should use a hex bolt insude the adapter, a Philips head screw can't create enough tork.
Simple and informative. Great video !
hello.just need a clarification, so this means you dont use the flower anymore?
Is it not possible to replace the top cup of the stem adopter with the top cup of the headset?
What product did you insert into the fork? It was a quill to thread less adapter, but it fit inside a 1 1/8 fork?
Yes, it’s a quill stem converter for threaded forks, they have size for 1 1/8” steerer tube forks.
Thank you! Worked like a charm.
Clever idea
Great! I believe this will also work to convert my threaded fork to thread-less system with a new headset as well. Thanks
Yes, this will work, thanks for watching.
Was it an 1inch threaded fork

U think 80mm m8 bolt will work?
Does the top cap use a standard top cap bolt? In other words, could I use this top cap on a different fork with a standard star nut?
It fits on standard star nut but you need the Hope bolt to fit into their top cap.

Is it okay if i use star nut instead of hope?
Yes, you can use a star nut instead of Hope head doctor (expander).

They don’t allow me to post links, search “quill stem converter” on ebay or Amazon to find these adapters.

omg so simple but so good
What is the size of nut and bolt if your extender is 25.5-28.6
The size of the bolt is always M8 and the M10 flange nut shoult fit too.
DanyoSports What if a M8 bolt is not available in your region
DanyoSports I followed all of this yet there are no M8 bolts here
