The start of the song represents the depression and powerlessness of being institutionalized. That rage kicks in after the second chorus “yeah!”

Most do not listen to the meaning behind the lyrincs; too deep for people
To reply to your remarks on being disappointed in the lack of "aggression" in this song, Master of Puppets has plenty of rage thrash songs that you have yet to hear. However, Metallica's ability to write songs outside of just a strict style of thrash metal is what set them apart from many other bands of the genre and showcased their talent in writing musically diverse songs.
Set them apart? Judas Priest does everything Metallica does, but they do it 10x better. While Metallica were a great band in the 1980's, they just kinda drifted away from their fans in the 1990's, kinda doing their own thing and suffering because of it. Don't think they'll ever get back to their roots.

Oh, internet argues is so fun, man! Hit the shit on the fan - I'll have popcorn and watch it! I know that typical fanboys can't accept that another band good too. They are still kids with black/white perspective: it's only that they favourite band better than EVERYONE. And I don't expect for them to think about things like "how can you differ one band being better over the other? On you personal feeling? Do you think that you personal feeling is objective truth?". Fanboys don't see this perspective, until they get ~25-30 years old.

This song will grow on you and become a favorite.
The song is based on One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and the beginning is in part being told by someone forcefully pacified as well as showing someone down and depressed. It is hard to snap out of the melancholy. If you see the movie, you will get the vibes.
The rage and feeling of utter helplessness James Hetfield describes in this song is palpable. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Match it with the haunting and mysterious melody that is played for the entire first half, and it's darn near perfect
This one is my favorite Metallica song. The start is just very haunting and that's the feel they were going for. Instead of aggression every second (this isn't Slayer) they take time to create a haunting melody.

I'm not a big fan of the song after the haunting melody is dropped for a much faster and aggressive guitar section.
Still a great guitar section but I prefer the mysterious melodic section.

That song is perfection!
There are so many thrashy and fast paced songs on this album that there needed to be a break and even then it was only the first half of the song. But to a lot of people from my generation (being around 13-18 when this came out) this song took on a lot of different meanings outside of the face value of it being about an insane asylum. Lots of teen angst, rebelling against your parents and the system that was evolving to censor the music industry (the PMRC). Nothing beats being an 80's kid. \m/\m/ If you want your face smashed in for the whole song, go with Disposable Heroes (although quite repetitive) or Damage Inc.

Facts
In the original demo tape of this song, the lyrics were very much different. The demo tape included no chorus; it contained basically the same tune, but halfway in the song cuts off into the bass Interlude of "Orion" which is another song on the album. This is somewhat inspired by the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
I think maybe you're just pulling "facts" out yer ass. In what interview did they say that movie inspired this song?
You REALLY should check out the live version of this song from the Seattle 1989 or San Diego 1992 concerts. The live versions of these songs are on a whole other level. Not every song on this album has to be filled with aggression and rage. This album showed everyone that Metallica has the ability to write songs outside of just the typical thrash metal style which is what set them apart from many other bands at the time and showcased their talent in writing songs that are musically diverse instead of just writing angry, aggressive music just for the sake of writing angry and aggressive music.
That's what sets Metallica apart from their contemporaries, they don't write aggressive and fast music just for the sake of it. You also forget Lilly that the more aggressive and thrashy stuff in "One" came at the halfway mark of the song. Since "Fade to Black" worked so well, they decided to continue along with the ballad format. You also skipped "The Thing That Should Not Be" lol.
This song was also influenced by the book as well as the film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
Every song may not have to be filled with aggression and rage, but if that's what she wants to hear, then who the hell are we to oppose that? Stop making fanboy excuses for what people should or shouldn't like.

Consider this the calm before the storm, disposable heroes will blow your mind, I love how your disappointed but then a minute later the song kicks into gear and your like yup there it is, great reaction, I feel the same way about this song.
My favorite song on this album it just hits so hard another banger it gets better as it goes along. It starts out slow like stairway to heaven then it picks up
I think my favorite thing about your reactions is just seeing you sitting there vibin' out to the song and seeing you totally enjoying what you're hearing. You don't always see that with a lot of these reaction channels so that's always nice to see. Especially with songs that I've always enjoyed. It's like, yeah they get it.
If you want aggression, thrash, and energy, just wait. Disposable Heroes and Damage, Inc. will give you plenty of those. You're also about to hear Orion and Leper Messiah, the greatest instrumental in heavy metal and one of Metallica's most underrated tracks respectively. This record is a masterpiece. From Battery to Damage, this record brings every feeling possible.

yah - i was thinking the same thing when she tried to contrast the two songs. Though One is heavier 'emotionally' from the jump - especially because of the video imagery.
I agree. I do prefer this over One, but do like them both. I think my biggest problem with One is the album it comes from. Lars ruined And Justice just to be a douchebag to Jason I think. There's an interview with the studio guy who mixed the album and he said Lars came in there and made him turn the bass all the way down to the point that it's almost not even there, and you can hear it in the album. Or rather, you can't hear it. There isn't any bass on it. At all. Well, not outside of Lars' kick drums that is. Those you can hear loud and clear, but there's literally almost no audible bass guitar on that album. Pay attention the next time you hear it.

@prodICYN I didn't say that One is a bad song. Just that Lars instructed the mixer to turn the bass guitar down to the point it's almost nonexistent. I have a system with 3 gigantic subwoofers, the measuring equipment, and know-how to dial them all in, and I can promise you the only bass you can feel is coming from Lars' drums.

Yeah Lilly Jane, stay away from Orion until you grow more appreciation for Metallica’s melodic elements. They are great at thrash when they go full throttle, no doubt. But if that’s all they ever did, they would not be as successful as they are today.
I was going to say the same thing. Orion has to be one of the greatest instrumental melodic/metal songs of all time.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is the movie that inspired this song. One of the movies that helped put Jack Nicholson on the map and a chilling portrayal of being stuck in a nightmare insane asylum.
You seem to have reacted how i did when i first heard this song when i was a younglin getting into metal. First time i heard this song i loved the intro, that dark somber sound, then it kinda goes all over the place and i got lost. As time went by i realized it all fits well, it was just my untrained ears were still young/new to proper heavy metal and still too used to the more mainstream pop rock sound i had heard growing up as a kid on the tv and radio.
The song takes you on a journey, from calm introspection, into rage defined by those ruminations. One of their best, in my opinion.
I appreciate so much the honesty about not being your favorite song. On top of that, you did not apologize and I wish more reactors would follow this. Keep it up!

It's not all about rage and aggression all the time. An album at 100% speed without slower sections with meaningful lyrics and a clear message makes it very redundant. This album is great at balancing that harmony. Sure, metallica can rage hard, but it doesn't mean they can't make tracks with meaningful messages and analogies. You can hear the progressions of this song as a story, even good action films have calm moments to balance out the intensity and violence.
The guitar work put into this is amazing and it's easily becoming one of my metallica songs.
Awesome song. Awesome reaction! It is slower, but it has always been a song where I can just close my eyes and feel the music.
One of the best things about Metallica is that they're not cookie cutter. All songs aren't going to be the same. I respect your liking this song less than others, but interestingly for me this is one of my top five favorite Metallica songs. I love how the conflicted emotions of the inmate are betrayed, and it's a buildup to his eventual decision to break out. I think the journey and the anticipation are important to portray the message, so if it were hard-hitting from the beginning it would simply be an artistic portrayal of the same emotion through the whole song. In the song One, yes it has a lot more energy because the guy is in pain and has already decided what to do it's just a story explaining how he feels and how he got to the way he feels but it's interwoven throughout so it properly is a portrayal of emotion. This song, welcome home, portrays the consternation, conflict, confusion, anger, then build up to burst out decision. I think it's done the way it is to relay the message the way they wanted to relay it, and I respect them for that. I'm sure you respect them too, but I understand that this particular song didn't give the hard edge that you most enjoy. So similarly, you probably wouldn't like some of the songs like Mama Said for instance which is almost a country ballad. I think that's one of the reasons Metallica is so popular with so many people, because it does explore a variety of expressions. So there probably aren't many people who like every song, just like I don't really care for anything from the Injustice for all album, but I do love everything from for whom the Bell tolls to wherever I May roam. Combination of message and artistic weaving are really nice to enjoy pretty much emotionally equally as well as the hard-hitting stuff, just for different reasons. But I understand other people may prefer one type of their song and that's cool too. I love your honesty though and really appreciate all the songs you react to from Metallica. It's always interesting to hear other people's viewpoint on songs, especially contrary ones to ones that I love because it helps me see it in a new way sometimes with details I hadn't even considered. So I enjoyed your reaction even if you didn't particularly like this one it's really nice to know that you are sincere and honest. Thanks and I'll see you on the next one. :-)

As someone who dealt with autism growing up, and people who called me "freak" or "weirdo" just because I was different to everyone else. And feeling outcast because it, this song really spoke to me. And before long, Metallica became my escape.

I will always assosiate this song woth the semester I spent in Monnesota. They had a planetarium and everytime I saw that sign this song started playing in my head with "sanitarium" changed to "planetarium" 😄

I was 9 when this album came out, it was the inspiration for me to pick up the guitar, and ive been playing ever since. This song changed my life.

If they had the same aggression through the whole song it wouldn’t be as heavy. If you put something soft next to something heavy, the heavy part comes in much stronger. Building it up
James is one of the greatest lyricists, and composer as well. I think sometimes underrated for not being a lead/solo player (although he has quite a few excellent solos), but he is just one of the greatest musicians ever.

This is one of the most fun songs to play on guitar
I've always seen it as the first half is more about sadness and absurdity of the situation and reflecting on it which triggers anger as it goes into each chorus and after the second chorus that and anger takes over, turns into rage and fighting back.
my history on this song specifically was completely different from Lilly's first. I was 15, hanging out at the "teen center" in town where I grew up. We were allowed to have the "boom box" for 30 mins at a time - it was a tape player with big speakers throughout the hall. I was playing pool and listening to MY choice for the 30 mins which was Def Leppard (hysteria album).
A headbanger/stoner dude I knew in passing from school - John Caldwell - said to me "if you like that - let me play something better - you'll love this" I gave up my last few minutes to let him show off what he had. I had never listened to true heavy metal/thrash metal - Def Leppard was about as hard as it got then. He put on "Welcome Home - Sanitarium" and it was like a second coming to me - like a rebirth. I had never heard anything so amazing and composed in my life.
That was 1987. I couldn't just go to youtube or pandora or spotify and listen again, they didn't play it on the radio, and they weren't on MTV, so there was no way I was gonna hear it again anytime soon.
I went home and asked mom for a copy of the cassette, and I got a couple months later for Christmas - and spent 2 days wearing it out on my Walk-Man. The next Xmas, she bought me Justice cassette.
That moment in the teen center honestly changed my life. I began a transition then that by the next year I had long hair, an earring, ripped jeans and a jeans jacket, and hung out with the stoners etc. I met some of the most amazing fun and interesting people ever - always just judging and assuming they were angry "satanic" freaks. They're not. Metal fans ive come to know and love are some of the kindest, creative, and simply unfairly judged and misunderstood persons. Eddie Munson was spot on point clone to all my friends from highschool.
Every time I hear this song, I remember being first introduced to the greatest rock/metal band ever.

I’ve seen them four times over the years and all four would be in my top 15 concerts I’ve attended ever, and I’ve been to A LOT of concerts. Trust me you won’t regret it.

I've actually got a story to tell you about this song that might help. I started listening to Metallica somewhere in 5th grade. That was 1991, so obviously the first thing I grabbed was the Black Album, then I heard bits of Ride the Lightening, loved that and grabbed it, Kill Em All, loved that and grabbed that, somewhere during summer between 5th and 6th grade I grabbed Master Of Puppets and put it in the tape deck for my first time. Battery - strong stuff. Master of Puppets - strong stuff, The Thing That Should Not Be - getting darker but strong stuff. Welcome Home Sanitarium - that's where I heard the quality, depth, pretty much everything jump and octave and it was music doing something, going somewhere, that I'd never heard music do before. It could just be that it hit me at the right formative time but - I not only have zero complaints about this song but I still think it's their best.
As far as not front-loading the aggression, if you were in an insane asylum, or perhaps thinking of a more scary idea that people can relate to - having the Victor Frankl experience of a concentration camp or gulag, while there might be plenty of anger I think you'd even more primarily be feeling absolute despair, asking whether there's a God, asking why humanity hasn't just knocked itself off the planet yet, you'd come to the conclusion that literally anything that the laws of physics allow is possible. That's not to say that they don't bring the aggression in the back half of the tune, I just think that when you're neck-deep or eyeballs-deep in this kind of thing - the suffering has a much wider pallet than just aggression, and when it's 24/7 it's not a five minute trauma where a fit of aggression is most appropriate, its years on end.
Metallica's Welcome Home Sanitarium is still one of those songs off Master Of Puppets you had to listen, but at the same time a lot of people said they sold out because of the direction Metallica was going at that time when Master Of Puppets came out.

The beginning of this song makes me incredibly sad. First time I heard it was during the documentary and they played this when they spoke of Cliff's death. I still love this song, it just makes me sad now.
I respect your take on this song. I think the idea behind it as far as song structure was very similar to Fade to Black where in ballad style it starts off with melody, heavier chorus, melodic verse again and then at the back end of the song it's explosive so to speak sort of like One was.

This is like the one slow song they have. I really like it for what it is, but they also have awesome agression in other songs. You want agression, look no further than "The Four Horseman" in "Kill Em All"!!!

Welcome Home (Sanitarium) was written based on the movie One Flew Over the Koo Koo's Nest starring Jack Nicolson. They wrote a few songs based on movies; the song One is another.

At the time this came out, children of all ages that had adhd or hyperactive, or just being a kid. Were sent to psychiatric hospitals. Just like back before that, kids would get sent to reform schools or military schools. One came out after this, after more understanding of Vietnam and Korean War vets
Think of it this way. This song is from the perspective of a mental patient that is more than likey to be heavily sedated. The tempo picks up as the song progresses to depict the meds are wearing off. By the end of the song it's GO TIME!!! METALLICA brings this genius approach to many of their songs. They were ahead of their time. \m/(>

Early Metallica, the song structure often mirrored the lyrics. Such as “master of puppets”, the song rages when he’s jonesing, then mellows out when he gets his fix. Here, in sanatorium, it’s kinda all over the place, much as an insane person’s brain would be. Battery is nonstop pounding, echoing how the fans give energy to the band

She's a Rock/Blues LEGEND from the 1960s. She defined the mid to late 1960s and was a huge major part of the Counter-Culture Movement, and also performed at the legendary 1969 Woodstock Festival. Now she's a true vocalist. She will blow your mind. And she broke down barriers for women, not only for Rock but for music in general, in how she refused to conform and in how society, at the time, expected woman singers to sing, look, dress and behaved. She broke all those barriers down and then proceeded to torch them. She's considered the FIRST female Rock star, is called by MANY the Goddess of Blues/Rock and was an unimaginable ball of energy on stage. She could hit 3 and even 4 different vocals at once. She had no professional training or vocal coach. She is pure, unadulterated rawness and pure natural talent. She is known for her raspy vocals but can go between raspy, smooth and angelic and bounce between them all on command. She makes it seem as easy as breathing lol
Unfortunately, she passed away from a heroin overdose at the age of 27 on October 4, 1970, during the production of her "Pearl" album, which features her final recording, an acapella "Mercedes-Benz". She passed away in her hotel room just 3 days after recording that song. "Pearl" was released about 3 or 4 months after her death in 1971 and went straight to #1 on the charts. Her only #1 hit is "Me and Bobby McGee" which came out after her death. It's sad because she hadn't even reached her peak when she passed away, but she was already the biggest female singer at the time. She was still a powerhouse and still is. Many female singers are still compared to her to this day. Janis had a way of literally speaking straight to the core of your being with her vocals and tug at your soul and heartstrings. You can FEEL the emotions in her vocals and performance. When I first listened to her, she literally gave me goosebumps lol Still does.
