Hey Stina, thanks. Just wanted to pass on the double sock and strapping techniques worked so well for me. I'd done a big hike and used my Salomon boots - ended up with blisters on both ankles. I normally don't get blisters, but what had happened is I'd been using low cut Salomon runners over summer and my ankles weren't used to the rubbing. Happened at the start of a trip, applied my second pair of socks straight away (and promptly tore one) and plasters. Had to nurse over 66km. Learnt that you have to toughen your feet and ankles up to boot use. I had gotten out of the habit of using two pairs of socks. Also learnt I don't need boots! Went for a hike last weekend and strapped my ankles (blisters still healing) and used two pairs of socks - and my Salomon runners. Brilliant. Oh, and put better plasters in my medi-kit. Thanks so much!
Good information, Stina; very well presented. I've always worn 2 pair of socks, for the reason you mention, reduced friction between foot & boot. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S. A.✌👌
Ultimate tip: Use a silicone foot instead of your original one! 😉 Mr Footy looks like the stamping foot from the old Monty Python sketches. (There is a German outdoor enthusiast here on YT who, as an amputee, once made a comment how happy she was that on a cold, wet morning she doesn't have to feel the damp inside of her boots like her colleagues. # Always look on the bright side of life ... Of course, in reality, if you need a prosthetic limp, you have to pay even greater care not to get sores where it attaches to your body.)
Could you guys make a winter edition of this video? Preventing blisters in winter is doubly hard, especially if one uses vapour barrier liners (VBLs) to stop sweat from entering the boot. Ski boots also concentrate friction in particular places. I personally use boots with removable insulation (felt inner boots) so that I don't have to use VBLs. I dry them in my sleeping bag at night, placing Nalgene bottles with hot water into each inner. Although VBLs make the environment around the foot more humid, they also reduce friction. Are boots without water-proof membranes better for blister prevention, in so far as they prevent the buildup on humidity around the foot?
Good video. I wonder if the tendency to wear Gore-Tex shoes/boots create the condition for more blistering than normal? It’s hard to find good hiking boots that don’t have a membrane in the US; I wish we had access to the kind of shell boots that you wear. I’m familiar with Lundhaugs, but not sure about other brands.
At the moment I use the Crispi Ranger boot but it's gore-tex in them. Matti use a Swedish boot called Jörn-kängan. It doesn't have any membran at all. /Stina
Stina !!! Where do I get a sweater like you're wearing !?!?! The neck looks WARM
Thanks
Thank you
