i will give you some great advice.
      1. Get a length of inner tube from a small motorcyle, like a 150 cc front wheel inner tube. You can get this for free out of many motorcycle repair shop rubbish bins.
      2. Grasp the length of inner tube with both hands, palms down or forward, two to four inches apart.
      3. Sit on a stool. Set your shoulders back and down (so your scapulae are flat) and keep your chin tucked (good posture) pull the tube apart in different directions - to the side, overhead, forward. One great exercise to to do these pull-aparts with your hands tounching the top of your chest. Again, pull back and down.
      4. You won't get much stretch from the tube, especially at first. When you get stronger, you will get more stretch. But these are semi-isometric holds (meaning that there is little muscle lengthening and muscle fiber tearing but there is still some stimulation of the Golgi tendons, which makes it a very effective exercise) .
      5. Maintain the holds at maximum strength (i.e., maximum muscle contraction) for at least six seconds (it takes a few seconds to build to your maximum contraction, so say ten seconds per hold). If you like, hold the holds even longer. I do the chest pull-aparts for up to a minute.
      6. Your effort counts most of all. Put in maximum effort once you get max contraction. It is only for six seconds!
      7. Do it just once a day for a few reps or even as many times a day as you like and every day too. Isometrics do not cause injury, but these are semi-isometric, meaning it is hard to overdo them, but not impossible. Have a rest day occasionally when you feel like it. It is up to you, but it becomes a little addictive, so watch out.
      8. These exercises work hands, forearms, upper arms, shoulders, traps, neck, upper back and lats. You will be filling out your T shirts differently very fast.
If you do these holds as hard as you can, you will see results very, very fast.
Keep those shoulders back and down! Remember that. This is a very good exercise for those who spend a lot of time in poor posture at the computer or phone.

I now have strength back in my legs, my equilibrium is back balance is perfect. So it’s definitely healing. Avoid surgery and take it easy. Surgery should be the absolute last resort.

In short, don't stretch backwards or sideways, that'll compress nerves. Instead, use the trap stretch and chin-tuck shown from 10:50 onwards, and the stationary neck muscle excercises at around 15:20.
I'll remember those. Been waking up with sleeping arms lately. Will also consult my local doctor for personalised advise.

Not 100% but my neck muscles loosened up and my head was moving just like it was a hinge that had been oiled. And that explanation about the smaller disk space and compressing the nerves in the back is a lot of help to understand what kind of exercise is wrong or right.

Wow, wow, wow! Thank you so very much for this invaluable information. I was diagnosed with spinal spondylosis, like many other people I know in their fifties, about 1 -1/2 ago and I've been through the mill with orthopedic surgeons who recommended arthritis meds and surgery, many wasted sessions at PT, plus a host of other remedies that did nothing (and in some cases made my pain worse). The chin pull exercises, after just three days, have actually made a difference, and now I have hope that by continuing to do these and correcting my posture, I can fix this and finally be pain free going forward. Everyone should watch this video. Thank you, Dr. Mandell.

This is mind-blowing! I have cervical spondylosis, a bulging disc at C2-C3, Occipital Neuralgia and Trigeminal Neuralgia. My Pain Specialist/Neurologist gave me exercises with neck flexion backwards (hanging backwards); neck flexion forward (chin to chest); leaning head to the Left/Right to stretch and also to pull gently looking downward at a 45 degree angle and hold all for 10 counts.
Which is absolutely shocking, because this lesson is explaining all of those movements are just causing more flare and more damage.

My mom also thought that I was making it up a bit. While on a holiday in HK my family from HK took me serious and took me to a doctor to get a X-Ray. Before i went to the doctor i just thought that it were triggerpoints so when he diagnosed me with this i was shocked. I now exercise everyday and have to stretch my neck every 20 minutes to improve it. It is now a lot better than before but i have pay constant attention to it. Stick to those exercises because it's so easily to fall back to 0 and poor posture. Take care of your spine now and your older self will thank you. I suffer from multiple back issues too. I have been in pain for days with vertigo all the symptoms and most importantly lots of pain. I have completely been doing the wrong stretching and after a few minutes just doing the double chin tuck I have relief. Incredible. So simple I was massively over correcting and possibly doing more damage to myself. Thank you for this channel.

As one spine guy said, treat the patient not the MRI (or X-ray). I have a disc bluging into spinal canal and spurs front and back in my neck. Even after MRI they cannot tell me which is causing 2 fingers of each hand to be numb. I don't have pain in the neck. I felt panicky that more of my hands would get numb and I wouldn't be able to drive. She finally did some physical exam tests and thinks it may be carpal tunnel. In both hands? Don't think so. I'm getting relief from PT, building muscles. As usual what I found out on my own has helped me more than stuff they prescribed. Alpha lipoic acid has helped tingling/numbness in toes. My lower back is trashed but haven't had images done as Medicare won't treat more than one section at a time! I was thinking of going to spine surgeon for an opinion then decided not to. Then thought maybe neurologist but don't think so. Need to save money for the supplements that will help me that Medicare won't pay for. And for PT which will run out at some point. Been going to chiro for decades but he's never given me pt exercises or changed his treatments over the years. Bought infrared light and am using that. Ones that are affordable don't penetrate deeply though, according to my PT. Seems to help sometimes on the bonier parts. Repetition may be needed.

And we also agree that preventable neck conditions will become an epidemic. So much so, I have even discussed with my own children about choosing a spouse who is not addicted to devices and consequently disabled from that addiction. What a lifesaver. I was looking for pain help and noticed all of the exercised I kept seeing looked (and obviously felt) like theu just inflamed my neck even more. I was like there NO WAY these aren't just doing more damage.
I think I just know my body, and I'm so glad I didn't stop looking because a lot of these people's voices alone make me so uneasy about their "suggestions" because they sound like they don't take the excruciating pain seriously. It feels like they all looked up videos from the same couple people and decided ro make their own scripts for a video.
I am feeling well enough to FINALLY sleep. Thank you

I’m glad I watched this! My physical therapist and chiropractor were having me strengthen my muscles by going backwards in all directions and laying on a bed going all the way down with my neck and all the way up.

I have to say, you are a life saver! Family Doctors and specialists will not tell us what you're telling us Dr. Mandell. Thanks so much for your time and efforts! How can we reward you Doctor?

Thanks for this. I’ve lost my neck’s natural curve and it has made my life stagnant. Hopefully I’ll restore the curve with your suggestions. Thanks so much!
