Hard to Start E90 BMW? Cranking for long? Potential Fix (Fuel Pump Control Module Replacement)

  • In this video I show you how to upgrade from a second generation EKPM2 fuel pump control module to an EKPM3 third generation module. This is a potential cause for extra long cranks during startup.
    I do this on my 2008 BMW 335i but this would apply to any E90 and also other BMW models. You'll find your LPFP or low pressure fuel pump does not prime as expected when unlocking your car or opening your door.
    The EKPM3 modules shipped from the factory on LCI (2009+) cars and a number of issues are addressed in this revision. I get inside and compare the two in this video.
    I also show you how to remove your non folding rear seats.

    Hey how is going ? ... quick question when reading the car information from ZCS/FA f. ECU it reads the vin number but doesn’t read the FA number instead I get an error code saying : the following feature is invalid for FA :#1209
    When I try to enter fa manually it reads the vin and gives me options of numbers like $1CA and so on my question is can I type in the fa number my self? Or is there another option to find the fa number and then type it on NCS expert tool?

    Great videos. I've watched quite a few and am subbed. I noticed you used a phrase and commented on the idea (as I think most of us do with cars) "Can I keep it on the road long enough and make it worth it?" This is something we usually start out thinking and trying to figure out but then when we get bored of the old car we give in and just buy that new "Other" car we've been wanting. But the facts are with these cars is it's always worth it to keep the 335i 340i, 135i, 240i, 235i, etc series cars as they are way cheaper to fix and run as well as give us all the big power we crave at a fraction of the cost of monthly payments or even an all out purchase of a new car. At say $1000.00 a moth or more for a new one it's way cheaper to keep the old one and they are so amazing at not rusting. Even in some of the salty areas of the world. We buy new ones for the fun of it and the excitement of the "New Car". LOL.

After the first successful start, I don't have a problem unless left in the parking deck of my school for about 4 hours. Thanks! today we replaced the regulator and the pump, and the pressure in our fuel rail stays up even after we shut off the engine. Will have to wait until autumn/winter to see if this fixed the long cranks - ours was only long-cranking during colder weather and has not done it since the start of June. But we did bring the residual pressure back into spec.

    Hi,
    The link you posted explicitly states that INPA 5.0.6 does not support the EKPM3 fuel module. Are you using a different INPA version/has that been resolved/if I buy a used fuel control module for another e90 328I (my car) and plug-n-play, would I be good?
    My328I e90 LCI engine stalls as it's driving from time to time: the Service Engine Light comes on, iDrive displays "Fuel Pump Malfunction", but no codes are thrown or saved. The car starts up after a while (mainly after I lock the car and let electronics sit for a few minutes). I've already changed the fuel pump - wondering if this might be the issue

      Edit: I will be testing thermal tape on the underside of the new module. My list of codes reads as follows, may be the same as yours:
      A10A - Timing Challenge
      A0B4 - Motor Start/Starter Operation (Fixed)

    Very informative. You gave me a new direction to look for my long crank issue. My long cranks aren't intermittent, they are contestant. It takes like 20 to 40 seconds of straight cranking after a few hrs of sitting. lol My car is an e83 X3 with an n52, it never made the prime sound before the long crank issue. Not sure why, maybe because my car has more of a traditional fuel system. I didn't know there was a fuel pump control module. I was about to fire the parts cannon and replace the fuel pump and injectors. Thanks for uploading!

      Did you figure out your problem? What did it end up being? Mine is the same as yours.. same platform e83 x3. The cranks aren’t that long tho..

    • @175dell
      @175dell 4 года назад +1

      @@TheSponge945 the car was starting a little quicker as the weather was getting warmer. But one issue that popped up last week was a misfire on cylinder 6. I checked the plugs and the gap was huge. Like .85" lol and they only have 10k miles on them. So I regapped to iirc .40" and the misfire went away, also it starts normal now. So I would say check your plug gap. It might not have been the root cause of my issue but it for sure wasn't helping. Another culprit to check is your valve eccentrick shaft sensor plug. Some people get oil in there and it makes for a poor connection.

    Even if you replace this module, you will end up in the same problem.
    I took my 750 to the dealer and they asked $1600 for the repairs (replace the EKPM3 module and the fuel pump)
    I replaced the fuel pump myself with the OEM part and still have the same problem.
    I found out that this module (EKPM3) is overheating and about to melt and burn the car. I installed a computer cooling fan on it and I have no problem since then.
    please don't spend your money on replacing the fuel pump or the module, a $4 fan will solve the problem. you can connect it to the output to the fuel pump so it will work only when the fuel pump is working.
    I encourage every one add this fan to prevent this module to cause fire. even if you don't have a problem.
    it is a dangers failure design.
    I will post some pictures to show you all how that work for me.

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback, I actually installed some really good thermal paste to help with heat dissipation. If a fan helps that just means the transistors are burning out, not sure that would be a long term fix but let us know if it continues to work out for you.

    If you demonstrated the contents of the DME fault memory, it would be clear that there is an error code regarding the performance of the pre-supply fuel pump. And the error code will be present both with EKPM2 and with EKPM3 since the essence of the problem is not in them.

      Anthony Hamilton or at least ALITTLE GAS in the tank lol. There are 2 separate "saddle style fuel tanks" in these car's. Meaning it probably needs a decent amount of fuel in the car for the transfer pump and the main - low side Fuel Pump... I didn't have to flash or code the module but I had to "Encode" it with the vehicle order and the vin. I know on the Fxx models it's more straight forward so you may not need to do anything then plug it in. I'd check the forums.
