I’m glad to see that I wasn’t the only one who fell in love with these old rust buckets. I’ve owned three and am seriously considering a fourth. So to see how you make it look easy’ish makes my desire even stronger. Ugh right up until I remember all the buckle busting I did as a kid with these. Sure am looking into getting you guys to beating this time on mine. When I find one. Lol I keep dreaming…. Keep up the good work.

One other quirk about the transmission? The shifter cable was TOTALLY exposed beneath the body. It often suffered failure from abrasion to road hazards and offroad hazards too! This was the "BEST" failure scenario you could hope for with these machines. Admittedly FULL SKIDPLATES beneath the body probability would've helped delay tje cable fray failure but sooner or later it WOULD snap anyway from corrosion at its mounting points.
    ALL THAT SAID...
I MISS MY 1979 IH "CUSTOM DELUXE" SCOUT terribly!
I'd take it back in a blink.of an eye if I had the chance.
Good for you guys at "ANYTHING SCOUT" for keeping these trusted (If rusted!) old pals of ours up and running on and off our roads!

    Great job everybody!
Back in the late 90's I owned two Scouts ('79 & '80). The '79 yellow w/ tan interior and white top truck had the 345 V8 that was fun to drive and play with off road. The '80 brown w/ tan interior had, of course, the Nissan Turbo Diesel and was a slug at best but could pull a train out of a ditch. I didn't have a need to pull any trains out of ditches so I sold the Nisan diesel to a fishing boat crew.
With the help of my friends at a shop called 'Anything Scout' in Redwood City, CA I procured a 392 V8 and had it balanced/rebuilt w/ a slightly radical cam. I got to help with the conversion. The end result was quite a difference to say the least. Driving both trucks with the tops removed was therapy here in Northern California. I since sold both but have great memories of them. I now keep Mercedes diesels from going to the junk yard (if I can).
    Cheers!

Growing up my grandfather had many Scouts, Scout II's, etc... I did end up trading one he gave me that had spun bearings because it got in a flood and he didn't drain the oil or anything and started it with water in the engine for a 1975 International truck with a Chevy 350 in it cammed, headers, carb and turbo 400 trans. It was a beast, but someone ended up stealing it and I was never able to recover it. I sure miss these things and would love to find one cheap enough to have one LS swapped and built for my son as his first vehicle.

The only thing I would want to do if I can find a Scout cheap enough is to install a full soft top on it, but still retain the factory hard top and set aside just in case I got tired of the soft top or would have to remove the soft top for repairs or whatever. But yes, the Gen4 L20 4.8L is the same engine I have in my built 2011 Silverado extended cab with a turbo and built 4L80E trans along with a fully rebuilt and strengthened rearend with 4.10 gear. It is a stout engine and loves turbo 100%. Mine makes 650RWHP on 13psi with a single ON3 70mm turbo.

Never seen a 304 run that slow. Very neglected. Ran my S2 with 304 15 yrs as a daily driver. Was solid strong runner. What a shame that some get neglected.

Yeah, many of the trucks that end up heading our way have been through a rough life.

Can you give some specs on the engine that was swapped in? I’m looking for info like what did it come out of, 5.3 engines to look for, like what numbers or letters am I looking for on VINS? If you could put that info one the website it would be very helpful. I want to do the swap myself and will be buying all kinds of parts from you all to bring it up to par. Looking forward to hearing my 78 scout run once again! ⚙️🔩

I'm sure there are many sites out there with better info than we can give on GM engine specifics. We often use 5.3l or 4.8l V8 setups.

This guy reminds me of Mike Wolf from American Pickers. Man I love Scouts. I grew up in IN not too far from where they where they were made and lots of guys I knew in high school had one. Back-roading in IN is a common high school past time and I always wanted one....still do!!!! However I just can't believe how much these things go for now...I found a barn find one in Southern IN last Summer and they wanted like $13-$14 for it and I was like WTF!!!!! Really.

If you need a project to make a video of...I'm your man. Just bought a 4cyl 1979 Scout and had it shipped. Doesn't run well at all...parked it and probably going to flip it. So disappointed after searching for 6 months.
