How long should the soil sample stay in the oven?

Anytime you are oven drying something (at the proper temp of 230 +-9 F or 110 +-5 C), you are supposed to dry them until they achieve "constant mass". Constant Mass is defined as "the mass at which additional drying would result in less than an additional 0.1% loss in mass". In general terms, if you dry overnight as the proper temperature, that is usually sufficient to achieve constant mass.

You might want to read the standard... the soil pat was not correct. This soil pat was concave. The standard states it should be a horizontal plane.

Agree. Now if only I could actually achieve that horizontal plane in practice!!
