“We’re Still Here”: Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration Reflects Ongoing Resistance to Colonization

  • Christopher Columbus arrived in the Bahamas 527 years ago this week, unleashing a brutal genocide that killed tens of millions of Native people across the hemisphere. Cities and states across the country are acknowledging this devastating history by rejecting the federal holiday of Columbus Day and celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead to honor centuries of indigenous resistance. Alaska, Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont and Wisconsin have all officially recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day. So have more than 130 cities and counties, from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas to smaller places like Livingston, Kentucky, and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Last week, Washington, D.C., became one of the latest to recognize the holiday. Washington, D.C., the District of Columbia, takes its name from Columbus. We speak with Iakowi:he’ne’ Oakes of the Snipe Clan. She is a Mohawk of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. She is the executive director of the American Indian Community House in New York.

You're entitled to celebrate whatever you want. I find it hilarious that many Americans celebrate this holiday and had the audacity to label people from other countries as "murderers, terrorists," etc., Osama, Hussein, Hitler, have all been portrayed to Americans as the most vile, and the most despicable humans who ever walked on earth and they agree. But we have a man, which History tells us the atrocities he committed against the Indigenous peoples, and a holiday is made for him? This is where I've learned about Columbus and his ways, i just learned this guys in 2019-2020. My Dual Enrollment teacher is white and she was very upset about this chapter before we even read, and i learned why, this Zinn boook, isn't just a textbook. Textbooks will sugarcoat ever thing. I'm literally mixed with native american, and i never really knew this. So they've really blocked out the native americans history from everyday books, and that's crazy yo. I will not celebrate Columbus Day anymore, Indigenous People's Day needs more recognition!!

Why dance on such fine a point when they're both true?
I knew I'd be looking into slavery when I tried following my genealogy but I had no idea that I would spend nine months reading slavers logs that spanned over 300 years, just to figure out where my family came from. It's a travesty brown people can only Trace their lineage back handful of generations and yet some white people because can follow their genealogy back 20 Generations because they weren't forced to immigrate by the point of a knife and sold into slavery thousands of miles away from their original home, forced to marry those they didn't want to and their children sold off to be even farther flung than they were.

Indigenous people, natives etc. ancestors migrated here from Asia long before anyone from Europe came here. They fought and killed each other long before white people came here. Many Indigenous and white people married and had kids, That is a fact. Some natives killed white settlers and some white settlers killed natives. It is the history of the world. If any white people believe they are now living on "stolen land" get off of it then! Don't stay here on land you don't' think belongs to you. Leave here! I have no problems or issues with the indigenous people. They have a rich history and culture. I personally believe we can all live here in peace adn harmony with one another. Peace to all!

I am really sick of Native Americans and Caribbean's are always portrayed by mass media as a bunch of light-skinned people. Yes, there were light skinned Natives and Caribbean's as documented, but a vast majority of European documents reveal that many Native America and Caribbean tribes also had dark skin .
I remember seeing dark skinned Native Americans in the Indigenous Women and Amazon fire protest last month and said to myself, these women would have been easily erased from history because of a complexion.
P.S. For people who consume a lot of the whitewashed, hypocritically European education of "history," not every Caribbean and Native Americans have or had straight hair. Read and research those documents.

Alot of us are light skin due to colonization when have Spanish grandfather and Native American Mothers. We are mixed does not mean in not Native American.

    • @00II0
      @00II0 4 года назад

@@citlalie9791 No, not "Alot of us" are light skin due to colonization. Some tribes also married with those who were forced to enter the Americas. Because of this, many tribes and tribal people became unrecognized as "Native Americas."
Also, many of "us" fought in wars against each other that where sparked by the Spaniards and French for the benefit of the Brits. Darker skinned Native Americans that became captive during those wars became enslaved. Some later regained freedom, while others became trapped in slavery (removing the tribal identity once known).
The very fact that Native Americans and Caribbean's were called "Indians" should sound the alarm about the skin tone of many Native Americans and Caribbean's. The word "Indian" during those times was (and still is) associated with people who have "colour," or "brown." The arrival of dim wit columbus also described the people having "Copper" skin, in which copper is "brown" skin. Other historical documents (not taught in MANY schools), for example documents written by the Spaniards and other Europeans, have made statements that many tribes in Florida (which stretched all the way to what is now called "Texas") had "Course" hair, "broad" nose, and almost looked like the "Negros" of Africa.
Light-skinned "Native Americans" are so quick to deny dark-skinned Native Americans, where many are also not aware of their Native American ancestry because of the invention of racism.
P.S. I am talking about Native Americans and Caribbens throughout the AMERICAS, not just freaking North America.

      Nick Stacey
First time meeting a Native person was in college. I was super busy studying science and spent hours weekly in laboratories, so I wasn’t very well-read or well-informed on much else. My only knowledge of the USA’s founding was the version taught to me in middle and high school: the Euro-centric, whitewashed, tidied up version. It’s brainwashing, pro-empire propaganda.
I had no idea back then - we’d share joints and I’d ask him questions and for his opinions...even my questions were naive and off-base. I was so astonished and humiliated during these conversations, I mean I knew those events were bad in a vague sense, but I had no authentic understanding of any of the catastrophes inflicted on the people living here when Europeans first started trickling in.
Looking back, I’m just absolutely stunned at the lack of transparency in our education system. It’s constructed within a wholly American Exceptionalist framework that dictates what ‘facts’ and people are learned about and revered, and which ones are forbidden knowledge.

The concept of blood quantum was not widely applied by the United States government until the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. At that time, the government required persons to have a certain blood quantum to be recognized as Native American and be eligible for financial and other benefits under treaties or sales of land.
Basically if you decide to come off your reservation and start a family, eventually they will no longer be considered Native Americans - It's a further perpetuation of the genocide America began.
Remember everything the Nazis did was legal and everything Americans have done to the Native Americans was also legal.... Think about that!
