Sometimes, games go above and beyond with their art. I love when games make use of cool lighting and I love it even more when 2D assets use it. It’s funny how you’ll get hand drawn things like this be lit to look like it’s in 3D and then 3D models in Guilty Gear lit independent from their environment to look 2D. This stuff is really cool.

I always thought that Streets of Rage would make for a good animated series, with it's episodic plot structure (each round being like an episode) and serious but comic booky tone akin to the 1992 X-Men Cartoon or Batman TAS.
Just imagine a Streets of Rage: The Animated Series with Genndy Tartakovsky as a director and the SOR4 team on art style, with scripts by the talents of Batman TAS and/or X-Men TAS. I'd watch the heck out of that!

I'm so in love with the graphics. Especially the animations are brilliant. The standing loop of Blaze is just a pure joy to watch. You really feel the mass of her clothes and body (yes, of course even her breasts). But also how she throws back her hair to restart the animations brings in a little variation and personality, to fool you she's really human and no computer product.

Obviously it's all down to personal taste, but I think you're confusing "rushed to make money" with "working to a budget".
Teen Titans Go is probably an example I'd use to show how tight a production schedule can be, thinking efficiently such as having characters mostly at 3/4 angles and such.
I mean, this is no different to what was called *Limited Animation* during the 60s and 70s with Hanna-Barbera cartoons like Scooby Doo, and is still used in modern anime.
But the "Cal-Arts" you refer to has tons of thought and effort put into it.
No piece of media is put out "without thought", it all takes time, money, passion and resource.

Streets of Rage 2 has been my favourite game for over 25 years, and I was very sceptical that a new team could come anywhere close to surpassing that game (since no other scrolling beat em up has been able to). I'm so happy to say that they improved on Streets of Rage 2 in ways I never even thought of, to the point it's actually hard to go back to it after getting accustomed to the combo counter, wall bounce and air hits, soft landing from being hit, catching weapons mid air after throwing them at someone, and controller vibration. It's such an excellent game that feels like it was made just for me.
I never needed another Streets of Rage game, but this is exactly what I would've wanted from a sequel.

Streets of Rage 4 is a game in which I really want to play but I don't have the money so... Ouch.
To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the art style but I like the details they added.
    Great analysis!

100%! The pixel art of yore managed to give it a tough, realistic vibe. This colorful & bouncy contemporary artstyle simply emanates a Saturday morning cartoon vibe. Just compare the OG dark no-BS titlescreen with this one’s rainbow & sparkly one. How is this drastic shift in tonality never questioned?

@@Target00smile Each of the Streets of Rage games have different artstyles in its sprite work, and it was only Streets of Rage 3 that was going for a grittier more realistic art style with its sprites. Streets 1 and 2 are far more cartoony, especially 2

@@SerenGetter You think so? I don’t remember much about SoR2 but I’ve played the 1st one to death and its slick, dark, cool, no-BS lets-clean-up-this-run-down-city aesthetic never looked _cartoony_ to me. Especially since it wasn’t as bright & saturated as this entry and its characters had approximately-realistic features instead of stylized.

I'm not a fan at all of the rather "French" art style in Streets of Rage 4. It's originally a Japanese game series which basically says it should look anime/Manga to me (as it does in the first three games--and beautifully at that), and that's the aesthetic I want to see in it now too. The more clumsy painted brush stroke outlines mixed with a more basic "Flash" look for the characters and the almost rushed look to the backgrounds just falls way short of the level of artistry I expected from this series in 2020.

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  4 года назад +2

No idea what you mean by _"Flash" look for the characters,_ what sort of Flash games have you been playing!? No Flash game looks this good.
*"Clumsy painted brush stroke outlines"* it's just called textured, it's an artistic choice. The backgrounds weren't rushed at all, I think the game looks beautiful for 2020.
I think it all looks fine, I wouldn't say (even though it _is_ French) that it looks particularly French, nor _"should"_ it look Japanese.
It's fine to not like the look of it, obviously. But it's nothing like a Flash game.
