The Buick GNX was the King of the G-Bodies right from the factory and would surprise many over the years

My father worked for a company that was owned by GM. Anyway he was an executive and got a big discount on GM products so we always had a GM. During the 1980’s his go to was the Oldsmobile Cutlass. Especially the 442’s. For 1986 he ordered a 442, but when it arrived it was the wrong color. So he did not take possession of the car. Anyways, he then decided to get a corvette. I was like finally a cool car. We test drove a corvette and he settled on a black automatic with the Z51 package. Well that’s what I thought. On the day he was supposed to buy it he changed his mind and bought a 1986 Gand National. As you can imagine I was disappointed when he drove up the driveway. Not another G body I said. My dad gets out of the Buick and said “get you ass in the car”. I complied and he took me for a ride. I came back home with a grin from ear to ear. This thing was faster than a Corvette. I could not believe it. I popped the hod and saw that 3.8 and the turbo and I was like no way. My father smiled and said. Will go Vette hunting tonight. We did and smoke 2 that night. The next year he worked his magic with a friend at GM and was able to order a GNX. The 930 turbo killer. He kept the 1986 and I drove it when I got my license. Well for a short period of time. I got caught drag racing. However, it was fun while it lasted.

If you got the money they're not. I bought a 74k mile grandnational for 24k un molesterecline. had the tires from the 80s that had to be replaced asap do to dry rot. I put 20k to restore the mechanical issues. Got rid of the crap break system all new acc components, new fuel and brake lines, transmission cooler, Slightly bigger turbo, 3inch down pipe, 2.5 inch pypes exhaust, cat delete, bigger injectors, stock rotating assembly, still using the flat tappet cam, led interior lights, razor alky running 20psi of boost. All that equates to 500hp and 600tq. I'm as fast as a stock camaro zl1. I can't compete with the upper echelon like the gt500 or hellcat but if you're not driving one of those or a highly modified car then most wouldn't stand a chance. That low end tourqe pulls from from the bottom hard all the way to redline.

I had a '78 Buick Regal 3.8L Turbo back in the mid 80's that was a ton of fun. The blow through turbo setups back then were simplistic but fairly new to us. Major learning curve and a ton of issues later... good old days. XD
    ---Just my two cents.

First car I bought was a 1985 Monte "SS", and I write it that was cuz it was a crappy conversion. You could spin the column to put the reverse lights on cuz they took out the shifter and out a floor one in. Engine blew within an hour of buying it. The owner of the crap car lot said I was "racing it" and his friend saw me and blah blah blah. Even if I was racing it - which I wasnt, you should be able to floor a car without the engine crapping out. It also didnt have cats on it.
I eventually put a 350 in it and put some new parts on it and it was running really nice, I had a Holley Street Avenger carb on it which made it run/start beautifully. Then one day at a traffic light, I turn left and my back tire with the axel still attached. I stopped immediately so it didnt come out and we just slid it back in after jacking it up - Good ol C-Clip strikes again. After that my buddy convinced me to go all out and tear it down and go from painting the frame to ? Painted frame was as far as it got. But I had the engine still and a rebuilt transmission with a B&M shift kit in it. Thats where I put most of the money beside the cost of the car itself. I ended up taking all the parts and eBay'ing them for a really good amount of money, close to $5k. I couldnt believe it. So I had my nice lil engine with a few arts and its a 350so it can go in anything...then the engine walked away one day when it was on an engine stand in my buddies garage. He claimed he knew nothing - which I think was total BS but I couldnt prove it. There was one possibility that a guy I sold the painted frame to could of done it as he had the means to get it (he had no prob picking up the frame), and he knew the engine was there...Still think it was my "friend".
Next car I bought was a 1987 Cutlass Supreme with bucket seats and a real floor shifter. It was the complete opposite of the Monte. I got it for nearly half of what I got scammed out of on the MC and the car ran flawlessly for years. I had a real nice sound system with DVD/TV flip out stereo and I had put a PS2 in there. Multiple times I was at a party and Tekken Tag Tournament would get brought up and after a lil smack talk, out to the Cutty we went. There are so many better options today to do something like that - Hell I would just have a smaller PC hooked right up, and the wireless controllers would of been a godsend too.

I've dived deep into the history and the lore of these vehicles as well as the Ts which I'm actually a fan of as well, so if that what you're saying is true I feel like I would have heard of it at some point outside of some random comment buried in the comments section in RUclips, ya feel?
That seems like a pretty significant fact that if it were true would have been expounded upon over and over again in countless videos from these content creators who are all scrambling to find any little piece of minutea to make videos about on the subject of the mid 80s G body's since they've blown up HUGE lately in pop culture, see my point?

If you're just enamored with the murdered out color scheme on an old man's body shape, then okay you do you. Those reason are legit I guess. But if you think it's going to be better than any more modern car, then quit lying to yourself...they're Buick Regals from the 1980's. Sure, they're faster than other 1980's Buick Regals, but that's about the only benefit. They're absolute junk compared to practically any modern car.

One thing you might not know about grandnational they are over engineered. With bolt ons and a slightly bigger turbo, exhaust and up graded fuel system I'm doing about 500hp and 600tq. I'm just as fast as a stock camaro zl1. I'm faster than a scat pack, mustang gt, gt 350, and just about all the modern cars under 50k. My neighbor has one on slicks and he has went nose to nose with a hellcat in the quater mile. My Instagram friend has the buick stage 2 block. He's pushing about 1500hp block can withstand 2000hp. These cars are monsters.

@@jdgreen214 I agree with all of that. I'm just saying that it's nothing special compared to more modern stuff. Heck, with similar mods to what you described on your GN, a late model Volkswagon GTI can make 500-HP out of only TWO LITERS displacement. You've got your GN up to 131-HP per liter, which the GTI almost does when it's completely stock. Add those mods and the modern GTI is pushing 250-HP per liter. And it's just a mid-tier Volkswagon hatch back for crying out loud. A new Nissan GTR makes 565-HP out of a 3.8-liter turbo engine...completely stock!
Heck, I've got a 4-liter doing 137-HP per liter...NATURALLY ASPIRATED, with headers being the only mod. Not really a fair comparison because it's a pretty dang expensive engine, but I think it makes the point all the same.
I've got plenty of respect for the old Buick and what it could do in it's day. So please don't take me the wrong way. All I'm saying is that modern cars have come a LONG way since then.

Please do some basic research first. I know it makes for a great title, and i have seen this claimed before but a buick GNXis not faster in a strait line than a ferarri F40. A GNX has 300HP VS F40s 474hp. A ferrari F40 does the standing quarter in 12.1 seconds

Real world testing saw the GNX (276HP, btw) do the quarter mile sprint 12.7 seconds. The Ferrari F40 tested in the same conditions only managed 13. This is documented and easy to find online, regardless of what Ferrari claims the times are.

@@DumbAngelDragon Just curious, where is the documentation that could prove that? All I see is that it finishes the 1/4 in about 12 seconds, or 11.7 seconds, or heck, even 11.2, not a word about it scoring anywhere near 13 seconds, so I'd like to hear back from you on this topic.

That is EXACTLY the whole point! And that is EXACTLY why so many people love the car, and that is EXACTLY why the car is worth SO much money today. It broke ALL the rules Instead of following what everyone else was doing

8:37 The location and the insulated Turbo Box is where, and How ALL Turbos should be Place AWAY from the ENGINE : WHY you may Ask the Turbos get too HOT up to 1875 degrees F . All current EcoTragics Ruin the Engine blocks by Warping the Block. Yes Turbos get Hotter than your Engine.
From my Experience, siblings experience, and Co-workers experience. The Co-Workers will not get away from the Turbo, I and Siblings went to Naturally Asperated V8 or V6 . I just Bought the only White 2022 Mustang with a Proper 3rd Pedal 6 Speed Manual Transmission in all of Califorenia August 12, 2022 . I was looking for the White Mach1 Handling Pack, wound up paying $20,000 more a Roush Mustang and the Magneride is Epic. Out the Door is where Shelby Super Snake or the AutoTragic share with the C8 Corvette GT500 Starting price.
Never been happier will be uploading Footage probably in a Different Channel for Automotive content this Weekend. 🧑🏻‍🦱👍🏻🏎️🏁
