      indeed he was but unfortunately he didn't really play dat long he was only in da big show for about 12 years, had several injuries. It's not just two amazing Yankee seasons dat can get a guy into Cooperstown, u have 2 be extremely consistent for more than 10-15 years. Probably won't get into Cooperstown but no doubt a class act who left his footstep in baseball forever in 1961.

      When I think of other players who got in, such as Hack Wilson, I think a good argument could be made for Roger Maris. He did have 2 MVPs and World Series rings with 2 different teams. You may have some valid points, but I am also biased. By the way I am not a Yankees fan.

      I am an Athletics fan. I have been for 39 years. I tell Yankee fans to look at the Athletics and admire them, because some of them will most likely play for the Yankees in a few years. This is true now as it was over 50 years ago, after all, Roger Maris was an Athletic before he was a Yankee.

    Here after Aaron Judge broke the record tonight. I despise the Yankees, but LOVE Roger Maris. He and I have some similarities, not baseball but in life. Both of us were the target of ridicule because we didn't fit in. I was picked on a LOT in high school because I held myself to a different standard than what went on at my private, Christian high school (shame I have to say that but it's true). Maris was the object of ridicule because he didn't fit in with "The Yankee Way." He's one of my heroes and it's sad to see the record fall, but if anybody deserved to be the one to break it, it's Aaron Judge. Guy carries himself in a way few nowadays do.

    Of all the men who hit 60 or more home runs in a year, Roger Maris has the fewest strikeouts for the year. He had more RBIs than Bonds did, fewer plate appearances than Ruth, as far as McGwire and Sosa are concerned, Maris's year looks better. Maris and Ruth are the only 2 to go on to get World Series rings during their year. Maris is also the only one who faced a hostile crowd at home. Roger was Catholic, and so am I, but no I am not going to write the Pope and request he be made a Saint. LOL

    • @Dylan98654
      @Dylan98654 10 лет назад +2

      Maris had 698 plate appearances when he hit 61. Ruth had 691 when he hit 60. But that's irrelevant. Maris is the single season home run king.

    You gotta wonder if these juice heads didn't take over the game in the 90's would anybody have been able to hit that 62 HR mark to this day? IMO probably not. Also man what a sad ending. Maris passed on before he knew he truly was the real single season HR king. This was a great flick though. Not a Yankee fan but I definitely respect the history of the franchise and it's many legendary players.

    What a lot people fail to realize is that baseball needed this. They may have even engineered it by telling opposing teams to throw Mac and Sammy grapefruits so that people would tune in to watch, go to the ball parks and spend money. This happened only 4 years after the strike and MLB was still suffering lost revenue.

    @creighton3333 That's right! Maris did it without being "juiced." I'm glad Fay Vincent put the asterisk BS to rest. Ford Frick was a jerk for trying to marginalize what Roger Maris did. I'm a lifelong Pirate fan and one of my proudest moments was the 1960 Pirates beating the Mantle & Maris Yankees. But Mantle and Maris were magic, one-of-a-kind men. One of my proudest possessions is my original Mantle/Maris Topps baseball card from '61.

  • @Scarecrow2004

    Maguire and Bonds needed "help" to beat Maris and Aaron.

    • @Capt_Pete_Mitchell
      @Capt_Pete_Mitchell 4 года назад +1

      True. Also that relievers were not used widespread until the 1970s meaning Maris got to face the same pitcher 4-5x a night increasing his chances to make better contact. It’s just part of the story. But modern hitters only get 2-3x to face the pitcher before a reliever with different stuff, arm angle and velocity comes in. McGuire and Bonds cheated yes but every generation of ball players have had obstacles impacting their ability to succeed. It’s part of baseballs never ending story.

    Its interesting that when you think about it, we view Maris as the "true home run champion" and therefore do not accept Mcgwire, Sosa and Bonds based on steriods. In 1961 many fans and writers still believed that Ruth was the "true home run champion" based on the fact that Ruth hit 60 home runs in 154 games and Maris hit 61 in 162 games. Im not saying its right or wrong, i just find it interesting that history repeats itself.

    This touching moment is brought to you by Safeway,the official supermarket and grocery store sponsor of the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. Safeway used to have their logo on the scoreboards at the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum and Candlestick Park, and now at AT&T Park, the ballparks that Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds played their home games in for those teams. Safeway has always had a red curvy-shaped capital S inside of a giant red circle for their logo, kind of like a huge target. It was perfect for steroid users like Mark, Jose Canseco, and Barry to hit! Talk about a damaged childhood for a diehard Bay Area baseball fan! Roger, rest in peace, that record's yours. Henry Aaron, stop giving Barry credit, and take it! Oh, what a shame, what a shame, what a shame!

      But steroids can certainly turn plenty of fly outs just short of the warning track into home runs. I’ve legally been prescribed and taken steroids and played baseball with them, they make a huge difference. I needed to take them to help my metabolism after a major surgery and my home runs skyrocketed. Steroids help extremely, speaking from a first person perspective. Mark, Sammy, Barry, A-Rod and all others feel great guilt for what they did, no matter how they try to act tough and persistent, they and I know deep Down, it helped us accomplish what we did and we couldn’t without them.

    • @soarinskies1105
      @soarinskies1105 Год назад

      He tested negative because his protocol made it impossible for the MLB to detect, the same thing happened to A-Rod and manny, they been taking a PED protocol for years but the MLB could never catch them in the act because it was always out of their system by the time the mlb tested them, that was until changes were made to look for bio markers, and on top of that, Manny more than likely screwed up his protocol and as a result the MLB finally detected trace amounts of the PED’s he had been taking over the years. Also your argument that he tested negative for PED’s in 1998, is irrelevant, because Jose Canseco literally named him as one of the many guys who he cited he either gave PED’s to, or was doing PED’s. So yeah, McGwire definitely did it.
