Mantle and Maris combined for what, 115 homers between the 2 of them!!! And this was before they lowered the mound (1968) to give the hitters an advance!!!LOLOL My beloved Cleveland Indians (Guardians) had a combined output of homers from their outfield of about 18 homers last year!!LOL They have not had an outfielder hit 20 or more homers since 2010, let that sink in!
When I was 7 or 8, after a Yankee game in Chicago in the late 50's, we were waiting outside at the Yankee bus with a crowd of fans. There was a small path from the exit from Comiskey to the bus. We were in the 3rd row of people, Dad had me on his shoulders, and Mickey Mantle walked by. I thought I died and had gone to heaven, just being that close to my hero.
Wow. Just realized this is first and only World Series game our family attended. We drove from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. Dad surprised us with tickets. We had standing room. Our brother was HUGE Yankees fan. Caught lots of flack from Redlegs fans because he wore a homemade Yankee uniform. When the game ended, he got lots of respect for taking the razzing. Mantle was his favorite and the reason Brother learned to switch-hit. On the other hand, we have no recollection of seeing Mantle, but made note Whitey Ford broke a Babe Ruth scoreless innings pitching record that day. Wow! Can't wait to share this with my brother. Thanks for posting.
I’m from Cleveland, and the Indians were my team! But, when the Yankees came to town there always was a large crowd! I knew the name of every Yankee player! To this day, I have a New York Yankee’s 1962 Pennant, that has a team photo on it, hanging in my office. Back then it was a game, many players WWII Vets, all REAL Men, unlike the spoiled players of today!! I no longer follow MLB, it’s not the same game! Miss the baseball of the 50’s and 60’s!!⚾️
Sure, is sad that he had to make ends meet on a $72,000.00 salary, $717k today. He would certainly make more than that today, that is because we buy the junk they advertise or pay the absurd prices to watch the games or attend in person. I seldom watch professional sports anymore but still pay for it at the store. If I could have three wishes that had to be laws Congress would pass and never rescind, one would be that advertisement was an after-tax expense, business would have to pay taxes on every cent spent on ads.
@@GhostRider-sc9vu No. It is because of inflation. Inflation is caused only by the Federal Reserve creating too much money, whatever you hear to the contrary. Now if baseball got more popular compared to other things over time, baseball salaries and price could rise faster than inflation.
You had the right message, he had to work jobs in the off season - but not at a lumber yard but rather lead and zinc mines in Commerce, Oklahoma. A lumber mill would be heaven compared to the mining jobs.
Outside my family, Mick was my hero. What an extremely talented player. The question will always begin with… what if he would have been? Love you Mick, RIP!
When I was a kid my dad took me to Yankee Stadium for the first and only time. Watching fly balls going out of sight and Mickey flexing his muscle arms was like watching supermen play ball. We had box seats by 1st base.
Mickey actually should have won the MVP in 1961 as well. He was the real leader of the team. But they gave it to Roger because he hit the 61 Homer's. Mickey probably would have broken the record as well but he missed the last two weeks of the season with that assess on his hip!
The “Mic” was feared, fast, and fantastic. As a Tiger fan , I had great respect for the man, the myth, the magnificent. The era when MLB was our National Pastime.
I remember a game in Cleveland where he pinched hit. He did not start because of a shingles flare-up. He came to bat visibly limping with men on base and he was the winning run. He promptly hit a home run to win the game!
Second baseman Bobby Richardson was voted MVP of the 1960 World Series, even though the Yankees had lost. He was a solid player for the Yankees these years.
I was 11 years old; these guys were my heroes. I went to bed dreaming of talking to Mickey about baseball. I really loved the coverage in those days. At night I would listen with the crystal set, and the announcers we so so good. Just listen to the guy here. Outstanding.
NFL is getting BAD , like this , too ? I have NOT watched a MLB base ball game , way back to 2014 - 15 time frame . I would watch over 100 + games a year , up to that point .
I wasn't a Yankee fan then or now for that matter but I always thought the 1961 Yankees were the best team of all time. Power, defense, pitching and timely hitting. They had it.
The Commerce Comet is still the greatest. He had the perfect swing and just watch how quickly he beats out s bunt. All the boys idolized Mickey Mantle end searched for his card. I checked the newspaper everyday to see how many homers he hit. When he retired I stopped following baseball as much as I did while he was playing. RiP, Mr. MANTLE.
I still can’t believe that they had a drain in the outfield at Yankee Stadium…imagine Mickey if he didn’t have to play with that torn ACL that he suffered in his rookie season. They didn’t have the miracle surgeries back then either but he was indeed amazing! There is no telling the other records he could have broken if he didn’t have to be taped up before every game. I was a lucky kid back in New York to see players like him, Yogi, Whitey and Roger.😊

I was 9 years old when this was played....Maris had 61 homers that year and Mantle wound up with 58. I followed that race between the M & M boys all year, unfortunately I was a Red Flops ( red sox) fan!!
Mante had 54. He took an injection that turned into an infection so he stopped playing mid september. Too bad. He and Maris would probably have both broken 60. What is wonderful is that Judge hit 62 without steroids. Judge is on par with Mantle as a homerun hitter Not as great as an all round player but Home Runs - Judge is the man.
My first year as a Bb fan. We moved to Cincinnati in June and there was already WS fever. Great lineup but no match for one of the best Yankee teams ever. Great to see Crosley Field again. Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson were a great 3-4 combo in middle of lineup.
@Matt Foster, the Reds also got power from Gordy Coleman as well as Wally Post. And Bill Henry pitched out of his mind as their fireman (they weren't called closers back then).

I'm loving all the memories this video brings back. Mickey was my all-time favorite player. What bothers me the most today is how MLB and certain players ruined the record books. During the steroid era players who didn't compare with Mantle were breaking home run records. Then MLB wanted to add more offense to the game - overlooked the steroid abuse, juiced up the baseball, and replaced the old ballparks with bandboxes. I can just imagine how Mickey would've done in the the new Yankee stadium. Remember, Mantle was never a strict pull hitter like Maris was. He used to lose 15-20 home runs a year in the old stadium when he hit long shots to death valley (461 to dead center, 457 to left center, 420 to right center). Do the math! Injuries and all if he played in the ballparks of today for 18 years he would've hit over 800 HR's!
Baseball has always been the best sport for broadcasting. Specifically on radio, but this camera work is surprisingly good and easy to follow considering what year it is.
No video games, no cable TV, three channels to watch (all with soap operas *every* weekday afternoon), no reason to stay inside, and we played baseball every day it didn’t rain, sometimes twice. Thank God I was a kid when I was.
@@Steveross2851 I never went to Crosley Field, so my memories came primarily from television. Incidentally, used to listen to the Reds broadcast (sponsored by Berger Beer) over an old Crosley Fiver radio. Anyway, Crosley Field always appeared to have a carnival atmosphere.
love the pace of the game, batters staying in the box and pitchers staying on the mound. no corporate ads squeezed in every nook and cranny, just the game, announcer calling the game, and fan noise. i'm so sick of crapitalism ruining EVERYTHING.

When baseball was baseball, no prima donna's, these guys played because they loved the game. I once talked to Minnie Minoso and he told me he loved the game so much, he would have played for room & board, and he was dead serious.
This team did more than just hit homeruns. The 1998 team was like them. The 61 team had Ford pitch the 1st game of the WS not like in the 60 WS. That's one of the reasons why they lost.
Yah that 1998 team was one of the best Yankees teams ever. My Padres picked wrong year to make World Series. A year earlier they probably would have won it.
When Casey went nutty with some nonsensical superstition that you don't start a left in the 1st game of the WS. That's why 'The Major's became manager in '61. Casey came back to NY in '62 with 'The Original Mets'
I have been a baseball fan since 1957 & after all these years Mickey Mantle is still my favorite player of all time. Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays & Hank Aaron also rank highly on my list. No one in the game can compare with these gentlemen. Each one gave 100% each time I saw them play if they were physically able to do so.
How could they not had this game on tape at its entirety is beyond me. What were they thinking? The networks should have been taping all those world series games. It was a BIG MIRACLE that the Don Larsen's Perfect Game in 1956 and Bill Mazeroski's home run in 1960 World Series were taped by a kinescope. The Mazeroski's home run game was found in a wine cellar in Bing Crosby's house? Unbelievable!
One wonders what Mickey Mantle could have done had he not stepped on a drainage cap in the outfield catching his spikes in it blowing out his knee. Just one of many to come. The late night drinking just added fuel to the fire. But that was the Mick RIP #7
@@TheBatugan77 True. And while those late nights with Whitey and Billy might have affected his performance a bit the next day, it was the injuries playing the game that really impacted his numbers. (Ok, except for the hip injury that abscessed due to the notorious "Dr. Feelgood").

Today's MLB is all about the Franklins. Selig ruined the game but should we be surprised? He wasn't a commissioner he was an errand boy for ownership, which is increasingly corporate and not single families.
Actually, my favorite baseball announcers were the team of Bill White, Phil Rizzuto and Frank Messer. Individually none of them were great, but as a team they were the best. Made you feel like they were in the living room with you. Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy gave you a similar feel for the Red Sox. .

I was born in Cincinnati, and we were still living there at the time - I was almost 3 years old. I don't remember it, but my dad took a photo of me in the stands with my brothers and mom. What are the odds I'd randomly run across this video?
Mantle was the ultimate "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself" guy. But because of his family history, he expected to die young, and he decided to enjoy every precious moment.
Had recently turned six at this time, but don't recall a thing about it since we were living in the UK, and headed for West Berlin, compliments of the USAF.
Yes they would. There are players that transcend universal respect. As a Sox fan we gave Jeter a standing ovation and a ceremony for his retirement year. Ichiro Got them same respect throughout his last year.

I was 8 years old when this game was played. Mantle was my idol of that period. Heck of a lineup for the opposing pitcher to face.
I was 8 years too and Maris and Mantle were my favorites also.
Same here, 61 Yanks/Reds was my 1st series@@happytentcamper
@@Graphiaphoto I was 11 and went to one of the games at Yankee Stadium.
This was when baseball was baseball without politics and nuances as today…..they were remembered hero’s of young and old….even today.
No bat flipping, stupid childish dugout celebrations of HRs, styling
and the best thing was the players stayed put for the most part so fans could really get attached ...now they are here today, gone tomorrow
This was such a great era for Major League baseball in so many different respects.
Mickey And Yogi Will Always Be My Favorites Of All Time.. I Was Just A Kid.. I'm 74 Now,, And Still Have The Fondest Memories Of Rooting For Them.....
Didn’t appreciate Mantle as a player growing up in NYC in the 60’s. My guy was Mays. Looking now, Mantle was worthy of all accolades.
Mickey Mantle worked at a lumber yard during the off season to make ends meet. If he played today, he'd be crazy rich.
@@GhostRider-sc9vu That's 750,OOO in today's dollars.
Outside my family, Mick was my hero. What an extremely talented player. The question will always begin with… what if he would have been? Love you Mick, RIP!
1961. The year of the all time home run leader for a season......Roger Maris
When I was a kid my dad took me to Yankee Stadium for the first and only time. Watching fly balls going out of sight and Mickey flexing his muscle arms was like watching supermen play ball. We had box seats by 1st base.
Berra 3 mvps, Maris 2 mvps, mantle 3 mvps, Howard 1 mvp. What a lineup
So this Yankee dynasty beats the big Red machine in MVPs 9 to 7. Neither team had deep pitching, although NY did have Whitey.
Mickey actually should have won the MVP in 1961 as well. He was the real leader of the team. But they gave it to Roger because he hit the 61 Homer's. Mickey probably would have broken the record as well but he missed the last two weeks of the season with that assess on his hip!
@johnvan6803 Jensen won it in 58 both mantle and colavito had way better years based on ops+ which was unheard-of back then
Murder row ⚾️ baseball lineup
I could honestly watch this all day long
The “Mic” was feared, fast, and fantastic. As a Tiger fan , I had great respect for the man, the myth, the magnificent. The era when MLB was our National Pastime.
1961. Maris 61 home runs Mantle 54. Howard .350 ba. And Yogi and Skowron. Great hitters.
Don't forget, the 3 way platoon at catcher hit over 60 home runs too!
What a great time! what a great player!
Appreciate these type of highlights anything of the 50's - 60's From Star Players . Enjoyed your channel awhile
There are no players like “The Mick”, any longer. It was a great time for baseball.
He was a solid player for the Yankees these years.
the pirates won the 1960 world series when Bill Mazeroski hit a 9th inning home run in the 7th game.

I was 11 years old; these guys were my heroes. I went to bed dreaming of talking to Mickey about baseball. I really loved the coverage in those days. At night I would listen with the crystal set, and the announcers we so so good. Just listen to the guy here. Outstanding.
When it was real baseball. Not todays excuse for a game.
And what a pleasure to hear again a real announcer, the incomparable Mel Allen.

RiP, Mr. MANTLE.
One of THE greatest of ALL TIME...
MICKEY MANTLE WAS MY ALL TIME BASEBALL HERO
This was 1st series i have slite memory of .grandpa n uncles watching on the black n white tv.i do remember a particular moment from then..g.pa took ke many× to shea gil hodges.seaver etc era..great memories..now?? Im old
My Dad took me to see Mantle in 1967
Lucky, wow, if you had a 💺 seat in outfield mickey mantle would've given you a souvenir, ⚾️
Vada and Frank, loved the Redlegs, terrible that they traded Robinson to Baltimore

In Mickey's last game in Detroit, Denny Mclain grooved a fastball for Mickey to hit out of the park. Bill Freehan told Mick it was coming.
Injuries and all if he played in the ballparks of today for 18 years he would've hit over 800 HR's!
totally agree ,judge being RH probably would've been lucky to hit 35 HRs in old Yankee stadium. (not 62)
50 - 70 homerun's a season had he played anywhere else.
Amazing video, to see these guys as if that action was taking place right now is great !!! ⚾👍
I met Mickey in retirement and consider it an honor to this day.
Baseball has always been the best sport for broadcasting. Specifically on radio, but this camera work is surprisingly good and easy to follow considering what year it is.
My boyhood hero!
I was 4 when this game was played. I had a picture of Mickey over my bed and my brother had Roger! Dad was a life long Yankees fan!
Bring back daytime world series baseball games.
WAS 11 AT THE TIME LOVED THE YANKEES SO DAM GOOD
No video games, no cable TV, three channels to watch (all with soap operas *every* weekday afternoon), no reason to stay inside, and we played baseball every day it didn’t rain, sometimes twice.
Thank God I was a kid when I was.
Crosley Field always looked like a fun place to play a ball game. No warning track, just a nice terrace.
@Hal Edwards yes they called the Crosley field terrace the incline if memroy serves.
@@BST-lm4po lol, you think we have a "free market"... did you know insider trading is legal for people in congress? the people who make laws? or that private prisons lobby said politicians for laws to put more people in jail? meanwhile mlb has (anti-free market) anti-trust protection. and nfl owners have banned cities from owning teams like the green bay packers do ... crapitalism is a scam and the people running it know it, sad part is their propaganda and p.r. has suckers like you completely bought.
Several Yankee greats here -including announcer Mel Allen.
RIP the great Mickey Mantle
Una perla rarissima😱
Mantle…. Maris…..Berra…. Whitey, and Mel Allen manning the mike. I was young but blessed to have lived then
One wonders what Mickey Mantle could have done had he not stepped on a drainage cap in the outfield catching his spikes in it blowing out his knee. Just one of many to come. The late night drinking just added fuel to the fire. But that was the Mick RIP #7
Casey always said that the Mick not reaching his full potential was his greatest disappointment.
@@markb20
I think winning a Triple Crown, three MVPs, 12 pennants and 7 World Series is pretty good. Casey needed to check himself.
@@TheBatugan77 True. And while those late nights with Whitey and Billy might have affected his performance a bit the next day, it was the injuries playing the game that really impacted his numbers. (Ok, except for the hip injury that abscessed due to the notorious "Dr. Feelgood").
And back then the Yankee owners didn't mess with the team like steinbrenner would
Today's crowd have zero idea of the difference between batting with just their cloth cap, and now with a double flap helmet. No way ANY player today would dare face a pitcher wearing only a cloth hat!!!
And Elston Howard batted .348 that year...
i love the camera angle and no clock--the way it's beposed to be!
Miss the "M&M" boys, but Mick was the greatest natural talent since Babe.....now, it's OHTANI!

1961 was my favorite summer.
Regular season ends, AL and NL winners meet in the World Series, played in the daytime. No divisions, no playoffs with half the teams in it. No batting helmets.
Nice footage from the James Webb Telescope from the distant past on another planet...
Today's MLB is all about the Franklins. Selig ruined the game but should we be surprised? He wasn't a commissioner he was an errand boy for ownership, which is increasingly corporate and not single families.
GOD BLESS YOU MICK ONE OF THE M&M BOYS MY CHILDHOOD HEROES.
OMG! Just look at Mantle's body language. That dude was hurting REALLY bad. Tough, tough man...
If only there was still announcing like this. And the quality of the game today does not compare.
That '61 Yankees team was something else, a horrific murderers row.
Marris - Mantel - Howard - Berra, That was a hell of a batting line up
Mel Allen. In my mind the GOAT. There were other greats
How about that?!!!
Actually, my favorite baseball announcers were the team of Bill White, Phil Rizzuto and Frank Messer. Individually none of them were great, but as a team they were the best. Made you feel like they were in the living room with you. Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy gave you a similar feel for the Red Sox. .
That's not Mel Allen. Sounds like Red Barber.
@@nicholasscali6069 I think it is Mel Allen. This is a nationally televised WS game, and Allen did those in the sixties, not Barber.

Casey Stengel always said his biggest disappointment was The Mick squandering his enormous talent, not reaching his full potential.
Mantle was the ultimate "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself" guy. But because of his family history, he expected to die young, and he decided to enjoy every precious moment.
