Everyone gets socialisation wrong. The biggest part of what catches them out is the word, socialising and socialisation are VERY different things. The second part of what catches them out is impulse control, new dog or puppy, you're excited about it, but unfortunately that's a bad way to start. Socialisation is 7:07 about getting them comfortable in any situation. That means ignoring most objects, animals, and people, .if you don't react to it, it's not a threat. Don't ignore them all, but offer them a meeting when they're calm. First dog you see with a new puppy? Excited already huh? If it's avoidable don't meet it. The pup does have to learn to socialise, but he's probably overwhelmed and frightened of these strange dogs, remember he's probably never met a dog outside of his parents and siblings. On the other hand you don't want it to learn that other dogs mean excitement, that's a very hard mindset to break! When you've taught your dog that you always meet dogs, they can quickly become a source of excitement, which can be a source of frustration and stress and can start a lot of behavioural problems that could've been avoided.
