I paid for 20 years but for the past six months I've played as an alpha on a new character and I've let my subs lapse. I love it. It's been a breath of fresh air to be honest. There's plenty of money to be made out there and with what I've pooled I could sub for a year, but I really don't want to. I'm getting plenty of kills, losing cheap ships and really pushing the envelope with my pvp as the ships I'm flying are really basic and unsassuming. It's crazy what you can achieve with very little and that's what I now know held me back... the min maxing mentality. I absolutely hammered these recent event sites and have been stocking up on injectors and isk with the proceeds.
I'll probably re-sub at some point but surprisingly I haven't felt restricted. Navy destroyers are a god send and as far as PVE is concerned they really can give the T3 destroyers a run for their money with a tailored setup. I've also gone Amarr this time, just to get myself out of my comfort zone and I've found a new love for lasers!
To be honest Dex, your vids inspired me a lot to take this path through the forest. Glad you're feeling a little more chipper.

Fantastic! It is certainly an eye opener to roll up an alpha and get going with more knowledge, less fear and a desire to find the boundaries for yourself. Min maxxing can certainly drain the fun out of Eve (or any game) over time. The satisfaction of achieving something with less gets a x2 modifier for sure. Please post an alt name for a code :) I may also get in touch in game.... :)

    Hey Mark,
Welcome back and I hope your recovery is going well. I feel for you - I am in hospital at the moment playing Eve to keep myself distracted. Nothing dangerous, just some grinding mining and re-positioning of items, etc.
I've played for 10 months, only ever as an Alpha. I must say I kind of like the challenge of 'succeeding' within the Alpha limitations, and your videos were a big inspiration when I got started. I did take an extended break and then came back with the 20 year celebration, and I am not regretting the return.
I view the game as a subscription service with a reasonably decent free 'extended trial' type mode. As above, I quite like the challenge of working towards achievements with the decks stacked against me by the alpha limitations.
I'm not sure if I'll ever go from the casual play I'm on now to Omega, but it might be in the future. For me Eve has become the casual game that I play between/round other games- but that might also be influenced by the Alpha limitations. Your abyss, scanning and clone soldier videos give me some 'short' tasks to do over breakfast and a morning coffee, with a Alpha alt clone set up for each of the activities.
Keep up the great work providing accessible content. IGN: Jagt Ulv

Hi mate. I was inspired by your videos to venture out of hisec. I've set up in a lowsec system with lots of asteroid belts and I've been trying out chain ratting and clone soldier hunting in an Atron and Catalyst. I even got my first PvP kill, with an Atron on a Stiletto! I chased him round belts for 10 minutes before I finally caught up with him. It wasn't a hard fight, but his partner Loki decloaked and blapped me immediately afterwards. Keep up the videos, I always enjoy them, thank you!

It can be free to play if you are a player whose interests fall into alpha capabilities. I buy my subscription yearly so I don’t worry about it, and most months I get lots of content that I enjoy. And my Corp gives me loads of content I would not otherwise try. As a paid game, I can explore it all.

Glad you're on the road to recovery DD!
I started in June 2003. History: There's no 'smart' phones, no Social Media, the internet was still getting rid of dial up modems and you still had to go out and buy a physical disc if you wanted to play games. Steam wasn't out of Beta until 12 September 2003. Feel old yet? XD
What is EVE at 20? A miracle ....
    That it survived it's birth!
Eve was amazing and apparently I'd missed the worst of the persistent bugs. The horror stories of Blue Screen CTD randomly when dock/undock and so many others made me glad I'd waited and there was still so little to do outside mining, killing each other, then mining again for replacement funds! But, it didn't matter because we had a cliff to climb. A learning cliff, not a 'curve', a cliff. All those memes were true, still true?
The amazing exploits we found, and there were no bots because the game was too new, small and difficult and it's small community allowed people, not alliances, to become well known figures. Mo0 Corp, Guiding Hand Social Club, an infamous pirate called Tank CEO, a simple PVPer who caused all harmless miners from anywhere in the game to - literally - brick themselves if they saw his name in local, even if he was docked, even in High Sec.
The Devs worked damn hard and the 1st 5x years saw the game transform. I was so happy when it finally came out of beta!
They were great times, but the game is better now. Change is good, embrace it and profit from new opportunities.
Eve is also a relic of spaghetti code with many quirks and still in desperate need of optimisation but it works and there's still nothing else like it on the market.
It's antithetical to the instant gratification crowd and adrenaline junkies, it tests the patience of a saint, probably helped me loose my hair, and I still love it!
Can Eve make it another 10 years?
YES. But there will need to be changes.
Eventually Hilmar will have to accept that the engine, the miracle of EVE, will need replacing so that the ambition and vision of eve can be fully realised. This is especially so now that healthy competition is available. You can't grow a software product if your potential customer's hadn't been born when it was 1st launched. Imagine Microsoft refusing to update since Windows '98?
Example: Limitations of hitscan mechanics prevent the use of line of sight in combat. So no frigate hiding behind cap ships to avoid getting hit any time soon. There are many conversations around 'wouldn't it be cool if?' But the code is over 20 years old. What other electrical or software app do you use that released in 2003? Sometimes, like Windows, you have to uninstall and try again! XD
I was - very - disappointed to hear Hilmar misconstrue talk about this subject into the phrase "Eve doesn't need a sequel" at Eve London. No, it doesn't Hilmar, but no-one is asking for one either.
    Re payment models:
We've all heard the arguments for cosmetics and cash shops for the last decade. I say the same thing today as I did back then:
    None of that matters.
You either spend your $$$ or you don't. The choice is yours, the company's already made theirs.

As a new player that just started playing about a month ago but a long time MMO player. My opinion of Eve is that it’s a subscription game with a free to play option. I personally don’t see the option to buy plex to sell for in game currency or the xp boosts as game breaking features. Especially in a genre that is known for RMT not to mention Eve was known for years to stand out for RMT in the genre. I knew a guy when I played SWG (yes I’m that old) who sold his Eve accounts and ISK then for well over $1000. It makes sense for CCP to want to get a piece of that pie. Until they start selling OP ships or boosters I don’t have any issue with their model.

So glad to see you're back! I think Eve has a truly improved F2P experience which can really jump-start a new player. However, going Omega is kinda needed to truly feel like you're actually progressing passed mid-game in an RPG as big and old as Eve (I prefer to pay for Omega). I love how you can play Eve in so many different ways like a true RPG, but sometimes feel like other avenues to play can be non-rewarding or too skill-intensive. Hope to see more!

How ever I feel everyone’s advice is to go Omega.

Welcome back. My perception is it’s a sub game. I came back after a 6 year break and attempted to play as an alpha and struggled. Largely because I came back to my 72 mil sp toon and couldn’t fly anything I was skilled into on the upper end. So much is locked behind omega. So to truly specialize into anything you really need omega.

at the end of the day Alpha state is just an extended trial, the game's subscription is a baseline and the cash shop is just on top. having played 20 years now it's always been in a funny situation, subscriptions were already a risky venture in 03, but it stuck it out for quite a while.
I don't think it's possible to play the game without paying one way or another, be that in time or money. other than those two options you are always "content" for another player at the end of the day.
Maybe I'm just a bittervet, I've had breaks and relapses within EVE but I've also made and lost friends.
I can't help but feel that for a lot of people who still play 20 years on, EVE is just IRC with a fancy interface.

Welcome back, hope your condition improves! On my end, I've been able to understand you perfectly. Although if I may comment, it's unfortunate that your accent is UK instead of US. While I prefer a UK accent to listen to, the US accents have a more nasal touch. This results in a lack of stress on the "s" and better to understand even if their condition is worse. If that were to be the case, perhaps we would have the pleasure to have a video from you a little sooner :))
Back to the topic at hand, EVE. Compared to all MMORPGs I'm aware off, this fits in a real niche. Even a 1 day old character is able to participate in end-game content of the newest updates and actually matter. No need to grind levels and gear to have any impact in the newest expension. Even on day 1 after the abyssal filaments release, a rookie cruiser would have been able to jump into the abyss and have fun.
Of course win chances and improved loot rises the more experienced (older) a character is, but your efforts matter.
In that regards, I don't think EVE is pay to win. All the ISK and modules in the world don't help a ship if they meet the right number of cheap fitted ships willing to be sacrificed for their cause. The Subscription based game, would fit EVE like a glove. So much content is more viable when having access to all ships and skills. Nevertheless, plenty of people are enjoying an Alpha playstyle, ever enjoying the endless trial option of the game.

Unlike most comments currently posted - I truly think that Eve is Free to Play and Play to Win... But let me elaborate
    1) The paid model is great, given how Plex is freely available on market for anyone with enough Isk. While fresh Alphas will need more time to farm that up, not so much due to lacking skills, as in-game practice in efficient farming. Been playing since 2017, and apart from buying 2 months Omega early on, have been plexing from Isk ever since without any issues... At the same time, the subscription, especially when bought in bulk, is very reasonably priced. Which is simply awesome for anyone with drastically limited playing time, or for those with poor money management skills. All in all - I find Eve to be the exact sweet spot of a free/paid game, where pretty much anyone can play effectively depending on their own circumstances. I just happen to play for free ;)
    2) While 'winning' in Eve is a very obscure concept, given how everyone gas different goals in the sandbox, I will consider PVP. Or, for the most part, my fav kind of 'winning'. Now this is where, unlike many other games, buying the top-notch equipment does NOT give you immediate overpowered status. Yes, bling helps, and it helps a lot, but the basic truths remain - certain ships and fits WILL have a counter. And making a single stupid mistake has killed plenty of the rarest ships outfitted with officers mods... Much more important than the best equipment are the skills to use it - and not just the ones you train for SP, but actual piloting ones. And you can only get better at making the right decisions, using the right modules, or outplaying your opponent by - you guessed it - playing the game and actually getting the relevant experience. Needless to say, attempting to get it with expensive ships isn't just counterproductive, as you don't necessarily learn from mistakes, but also prohibitively expensive. AT ships are a rare sight to see for a reason...
Other than those two main topics - I generally feel like Eve is going in the right direction. Revamped new player experience, changes to FW, new faction ships... My only issue is the apparent discontinuation of Proving Grounds. I REALLY liked those... Hopefully they will pull that one out of their shelf sooner rather than later... :)

Welcome back! You have missed out on faction warfare. I have a feeling you will enjoy the warzones quite a bit. Like most things in life you really wont find a black and white answer t your question. Eve is so large that you can really make an argument either way. There is a lot of content and even the new faction warfare can be done quite well as free to play. Market, PvE, Faction Warfare can all be done quite well free to play. To be really competitive in high level PvP like wormholes you will want the extra skills and ships that Omega offers. To that end I would say its a bit pay to win.

I think that eve can be a free to play game if you put in the effort to make your own plex but at the start a couple off months paid supscription are necessary to get a good roll.

Welcome back fella! It was great to see the notification that you had posted when I opened YT. I hope your recovery is swift. I was firmly of the opinion that I could play Eve without subscribing and was thoroughly enjoying maxing out my alpha skills whilst grinding missions, hunting down Clone Soldiers and slipping away from pvp-ers in losec. Then I joined a great corp, got involved in pvp and created an alt specifically for pvp and saw the ceiling that the skill cap presented. I took the decision to subscribe and haven’t looked back. I’d say it’s possible to play as an alpha but the breadth of skills and range of toys is limited and being able to deploy those toys in fleets is a delight. Also, who doesn’t like new toys! Pushing through the alpha skill cap does provide an edge but subscribing doesn’t magically provide the ability to use the skills to their fullest. I prefer practising those skills as an omega. I look forward to your next video! IGN TestoSlaine.

My 2 Cents on EVE: not pay to "win" in my perception, but as you said, what's "winning" in EVE anyways.
The question rather is, can you find a niche and have "fun" whatever you're doing as an alpha or omega?
The alpha feels like a Demo of EVE to me, not a "free to play" part of the game. But that never bothered me - ich much more prefere that over the 2-weeks free trial that EVE had back in the day and then you already had to make the decision to be all in or all out in it.

Good to see you back. I have wondered for a while where have you gone, but only one thing is important that you have returned.
The new anniversary came after the Uprising expansion, which I would like to say a not that bad update of Eve, but can be done much better. Nothing particularly interesting after the introduction of the new update, even to this point lol.
For now I am doing alpha stuff and things and personally I do not want to sub anytime soon, because it is so much fun this way. The game is not yet P2W, put some kind like pay to progress faster or pay to skip the grind. Even if you got a bunch of things, nothing will come in handy later. Flying a Titan but know nothing to operate it will subject you to be a giveaway titan kill for a bunch of fleets. Moreover, as for me imo, alpha is kinda "fun", since you are losing very small, and have fun the most. That's my point about the whole Eve things now.
Either way, glad to see you again. o7, fly dangerous and lose more ships :D

Glad to see you back, Mark. To make a potentially complicated answer, simple, Id say Eve is a free game.. that you "Can" spend money on, if you like. Agree with your suggestion that since there is no clearly defined "winning" then if you think its more fun to pay/subscribe, then fine. But I dont think that makes it a "pay to win" situation, necessarily. "I dont want to pay anything for EVE" "Fine... then dont" etc.

I agree. there is enough to alpha play to be a 'game' with various options to expand your experience. I think they have a good balance, so far. If you assume that "Pay to win" means "Be Superior" at PVP i'd say that it has not. All else being equal, (ship to ship, etc.) there are so many things going on in PVP that the skill of the player can be, and usually is, of much greater value than the extra DPS listed in PYFA.
To perform some of the more "fun" omega-gated functions, it's a subscription game. Getting a taste of it is very free, and very worthwhile. 6.5 years

    Welcome back.
I feel it’s all based on play style
While it’s completely possible to play with no subscription now, the pinnacle of gameplay is gated behind a subscription that is purchasable with time invested.
Value of time is all based on the player themselves and how they pay for a subscribed account is up to them as well. In a sense, players willing to purchase plex and sell it are simply paying for another accounts subscription. Everyone being subscribed is what keeps CCP paid to keep the game servers online.
The micro transactions of skins an nice attempt to earn more money.
As long as the purchase of skill points and equipment doesn’t give a unique advantage to those that do not, it’s not pay-to-win in a basic, traditional sense.
Alternatively, you could view the advantage of an omega clone as pay-to-win due to a character’s statistical advantage for a monetary value whether it’s paid in ISK or an alternate currency.

I'm still fairly new to Eve, but I think of Eve as play to learn. The more you play the more you discover, and in order to learn about gameplay, it's best to just get into it. Because it has that depth, I think the alpha and omega works really well. They can serve different purposes for different types of gameplay. I think that's what makes it a universe that feels alive. I do plan to go omega sometime soon, but I'm still having fun being an alpha.

Welcome back, sir o7. I would say that EVE is a subscription game with a very solid f2p option. I really think CCP has a nice thing going because the f2p is enough to get new players hooked and want the T2 omega paywall goodies and ships. Alpha is also a nice "ironman mode' challenge for veteran players. I don't see the game as pay to win at all. You can't buy experience, knowledge of mechanics etc etc. Player since 2020. I fly solo mainly(not with much success mind you) and usually alpha but when I want more I pay a little to get more out of it, usually on a quarterly basis. I've been playing since 2017 and have watched a lot of my buddies out right quit due to what they say is pay to win players but I still think we just weren't ready for the areas we traveled. First welcome back, missed you around. I started out as an Alpha and had this conversation with my then CEO as a newbie ... I was deciding to stay that way or move to Omega. I decided to buy Omega as I really wanted to fly a mining barge. I have two characters one is always going to be Omega and the other is at the moment(mostly for training) but I am not really dedicated with her. Omega really lets you play all the ships which in my opinion is one of the most fun parts of the game. You can do a lot more things as an Omega and well I am old and have the money to pay for the account so I just buy the subscription. But it should be noted that you can Plex the account and play for free as Omega. That can be a job in the game though. I like the fact that you have multiple characters which shows both gaming styles. IGN the Dark Logan

So I’ve just recently returned to the game after a break of a few years and one thing I’d definitely say that while the skills debate has been raging since extractors and injectors the pay to win doesn’t really hold up as you still need to figure out everything from ship fitting, how does industry work, how do sites work, where should I base, who should I fly with.
As a wormholer for many years I’m finding the change to high/low sec exploration as I’m going to places I’ve never been and trying out new content which I can run on alts who aren’t 100mil+ SP, so yes skills are nice to have but getting out there and experiencing what EVE has to offer is far far more important.

WELCOME BACK MARK! Hope the recovery goes well my friend. I think of Eve as a free to test drive game since it caps a 5 mil skills. After that it is grind or invest (pay) and play. I still enjoy the game and have played since late 2019. There are ways to pay to win I guess if you are willing to PLEX and buy mods with the ISK from selling PLEX. There isn't a lot of options for buying large amounts skill points routinely or cerebral accelerators often to boost a lot unless you are going deep with the PLEX and buying at Jita. I just don't know anyone who has that kind of money so if it happens. I think it is kept quiet mostly. So glad your okay and back. I have missed your content!

If I am completely honest, this past year has had a lot of bad energy towards the game but I finally feel they are hitting us with some exciting and new things that a lot of vets and newer players can enjoy and admire, new faction warfare really hit the nail in the right spot.
your seeing first timers (alphas) coming and going straight into what the game should/has always been about....fighting each other :)
With these insane plex prices alpha players might find it disheartening by the grind, but with the new patch there are so many new ways to make isk now, that will help you reach your omega/wallet goals.
go out and look up a new corp, go and do FW stuff and make friends or go solo hunt gas and make your riches.
I am quite excited by some of the new things that are being added that will for sure add a new level to the playing field in terms of big fights....shiny new ships!

As for the game, I see it as a subscription base game. However, I also think that the "Alpha Only" approach is very viable and, above all, very fun to do. The only playstyle I cannot embrace is the account plexing, since, everyone I know doing it is having a miserable experience. The best way, at least for me, is to wait for subscription discounts and buy a year or two (one or two trips to the pub on Matchday is way more than that). All the stress of keeping Omega for another month is gone and we can enjoy the game, after all, that is what games are for. So, the only two ways I play are thru a subscription, or going pure Alpha and just having fun. However, EVE is weird in that way, I know so many people that insist on making it another miserable job they hate. To each his own, I guess.
Glad to see your health is improving and you are feeling much better. I wish you a full speedy recovery,
    Cheers.
    IGN: Ferdinand Wolfe
PS: Had to forget something, didn't I? My first account was about ten years ago, on Steam (no longer exists). This account, one of two remaining is eight years old. At first, I hated the "Alpha Concept" when it, and CODE, arrived. Now, I am starting to like the limitations, however, CCP giving away so much SP and skill injectors might have something to do with Alpha being more than "just a trial".
Having a very old account used to mean something, now it is just old. As with everything in life, there is always a balance to aspire to, finding it is the nearly impossible task of our Icelandic friends.

Any game that lasts a while will have the same issues, especially as the gaming landscape 'evolves'. In World of Tanks the top tier battles are now flooded with inexperienced players in top tier tanks the game gave out or sold them, now my top tier tanks are my east used as the matches are generally crappy. Eve a chimp will grind a tier ten eventually.... I think Eve is so big such things are more perceived than practical though. Now we just have to grumble about how much tougher things were in the olden days :) !

Hey! Happy to see you back! You've been missed.
Hmm... what is Eve at 20. I have a lot of thoughts on this, but I'll try to avoid the dreaded essay. TLDR? Eve is a true sandbox.. it's entirely what you make of it as a player.
You can play as a free Alpha, accepting the limitations on skills, ships and content established by the game Devs, and have an all together great experience.
You can play as a free Omega, accepting that you will need to spend time in game grinding for the ISK to buy the PLEX to pay for Omega status. There are no limits on what ships you can fly or what content you can take part in. It's this option that negates any and all pay to win arguments I've ever heard because there is absolutely nothing in the game unavailable to you with this method. You might get lucky and pay your sub with one or two great drops or you might have to grind for it through one of the multitude of other ways to make ISK, but you will have that note to pay every month. I played 3 accounts this way for just under 2 years. Over time I think this tends to suck the fun out of the game, but it is a viable free to play option.
You can pay for your Omega time with cash. People earn money far more efficiently in real life than they ever will in game, so I think this is the best way to make the game entirely.. well, a game. Paying your subscription in cash doesn't give you more abilities or opportunities, but it does free you from the need to earn 2ish billion ISK per alt per month in game to maintain Omega status. I returned to this method when CCP offered their recent PLEX/Omega time sales and can say without hesitation I'm having more fun than I have in quite some time.

Well, the skill injectors can give an advantage to some extent, but CCP has at least capped the points based on the character's skill points. The more you have afterwards, the less you get out of the injectors. For me it's a subscription game and I think it's worth the money! Welcome back! Imo it is Not (yet) pay2win. It is “PAY TO PRACTICE“ and “Pay to NOT GRIND“ (passive skilling & cheap fun ships for the skilled, meta & corp reinbursmts etc.) & “Pay to INSTANT PLAY“ (shop & injectors) for the rich, which is a good thing. Broadens the demographic in its target audience (30+) to people with a FAMILY and a job maybe even friends ... who could otherwise never play such a complex sandbox game.
Thats what I love about it. ... pay to win? Na, cause I could bling out the best ships and still be floating in space constantly. And before u kill me for the “best ship“ part - exactly! ... no such thing, which proves my point.
IMPORTANT!!! Please to everybody out there, who has the money! Only plex your alts and pay at least for one sub, even if u got trillions! I do.
This way the devs dont have to kill the game by having to cater to the bloody“pay2win crowd.

Personally I don't think EvE is pay to win at all. An increase in real money spent on EvE improves access to skillpoints and assets. This is nothing any other player can't obtain if they wouldn't be throwing money at the game.
That being said, I can't choose between it being a free game or subscription based. Unlocking the Omega characters add so much more opportunities and feasible playstyles to the game. This would be a point leaning towards subscription-based ... On the other hand there are plenty of people who don't pay with money for their Omega time but rather spend time instead. This puts you on equal footing to those who do spend money. And last the Alpha characters are a worth while style to play. Once you accept you'll never be on par with the Omegas, there is still a lot of content you can participate in.

That me from the perspective of winning is being victorious in battle. I do suppose there are other types of winning like only flying stuff you built yourself, or never being caught - which requires so much discipline I can't dedicate that kind of time to the game. Maybe building stuff for profit is winning. I'm never going to fly a tech ii dreadnaught, that pretty much makes me a winner too, phew finally found on that relevant to me 😁 ign: Pollekey
