RD 33 engine was developed in Soviet union with an intension of powering MiG 29 which was intended as an interseptor aircraft and was meant to be used by Soviet air defence. Soviet union was a country which was rich in oil and petroleum so fuel efficiency was not of much importance. The black smoke coming out of RD 33/93 engines itself is a reflection of its fuel efficiency. When fuel is burnt instanteously ( inefficiently) black smoke is produced as a result of carbon products due incomplete combustion. RD 33 was developed to produce high thrust for full cycles at the cost of compromising fuel efficiency and thus the range. According to official Russian manufacturer brosher - MiG 29 can last for 45 mins in full afterburner and 2 hours in dry condition which translates to no more than 450 kms of combat radius...Now one can imagine what purpose the RD 93 which is a copied RD 33 can do...

India needs to replace almost 350 - 400 no of fighter jets in next 10 years.
Govt must invest it's own money in setting up new production lines for LCA MK 1 A, MK 2 and give more orders. HAL needs to produce at least 35 - 40 no of LCA per annum.
IAF will be replacing following fighter jets
1) Mig 21 - 110 no
2) Jaguar - 110 no
3) Mirage 2000 - 48 no
4) Mig 29 - 66 no
35-40 is very optimistic and unrealistic , even maintaining a production of 23-25 aircraft per anum is a huge task for HAL until and unless they build a new production line
Mk2 will need huge production lines if it hopes to replace mig29,Mirage,Jaguars within next 12years

We have already built production capacity of 32/y
The 2nd Tejas assembly line will take about a year to churn at 8/y capacity.

Nashik for MKI & then upgrade + Tejas MK2 later this decade.
AMCA & TEDBF will need new production line, built by decades end, >40 is only achievable by 2030. From current 32.
The 2 Tejas line can be stretched to make >20/year if IAF is ready to pay for increased work hours..

Hope IAF take some TEDBF. Currently IAF wanted dual engine in Ladakh, so navy mig29 was flying in there. So IAF should also consider some for themselves.
Since it's dual engine they can tell hal to make some changes to modify it for ground role to replace Jaguar.

You missed a very important factor which impacts the range, that is the aerodynamic drag that the design of an aircraft might cause.
Aerodynamic don't effect the range as much to whom we say it is remarkable , yeah aerodynamic play a vital role in different altitude but not much

Fellow Pakistanis should also understand defense matrix is not saying JF-17 is a bad aircraft .. it’s a good aircraft for a specific role for Pakistan. but it cannot be the only aircraft of a country which can do all the roles. Even in India tejas is being seen as a aircraft which has low flying cost like mig-21 and reasonable groud attack as mig-23/27 .
Tejas mk2 is something which is seriously expected because that is envisaged as something which can replace mirage-2000 and Jaguar .. which is land / maritime precision strike role..

Which is already mentioned in Thunder book that it is light weight Multirole Aircraft which is definitely for defensive role , deep strike k liye hamesha heavy weight dual engine aircrafts hi use hotay hain , baki Tejas and Thunder so both are light weight omni Aircrafts so both can't do a deep strike missions but weapons they are carrying decide what they can do 😊

I think another point that we miss is transonic acceleration which is critical for a defensive role fighter. Tejas has some work to do in this regard.
Discuss the aerodynamics of tejas, even though having thrust to weight ratio more than 1 it is still unable to super cruise. I watched a documentary where they explained tejas has some high drag flaws because it was totally new and a small plane. Referring to this, will tejas mk2 design modified and drag lowered?

I think that is why Tejas Mk2 is made to overcome some of the design flaws with the fighter aircraft. I heard in an interview of Dr. Kota who is the head of the Tejas program he told that the design of Tejas being highly unstable was intentional and things like that. He told more things about it but I don't have that much knowledge in aerodynamics. I would refrain from commenting.
@@josephstalin9604 yes even ada said they have done a lot of work to reduce drag on tejas mk2, by resolving some design flaws, how much? Is the question. But the bigger question is would it be able to supercruise?
If you want to know about tejas aerodynamic in detail check out millennium 7* history tech he will tell all about tejas design in detail. And having t/w more than 1 doesn't mean aircraft will supercruise. You can find some flaws in air intake but thats not something very big issue.
@@jai598 well the question regarding will Tejas MK 2 supercruise will only be clear when it makes its first flight next year. Because it is still in the making. Once the aircraft does its first flight then only we can comment on its design configurations. So we need to wait one year to see how things will work out.

I have been wondering about combat range of jf-17 for long. now i got cleared. in wikipedia its shown as 1350 kms (earlier) which is wrong and at that time all neighbouring friends you to troll us but now things are getting clear. in wikipedia is now corrected as 800kms which i am not sure is completely correct. It may be less than 700kms.

Just by looking at the paint on both the aircrafts, anybody could tell JF 17 is a junk fighter.
Tejas is much superior.
Delta wings have bad endurance due to higher sub sonic drag, example f-16 c ferry range 4217 km while mirage 2000 ferry range is 3335 kms

Also, another factor that affects combat range is the altitude at which the ac flies (air density is higher at low altitudes which provides for great manoeuvrability but at the cost of range/endurance) , which is why every manufacturer mentions combat radius at both high altitude and low altitude. JF-17 having a combat radius of ~800 nm at high altitude is no big deal, probably LCA also has comparable corresponding numbers. What makes an ac like Mirage so special is the fact that it has a combat radius of ~800 nm at low altitude, which is the best amongst any fighter in service today across the world (also makes it ideal for deep strike/ anti-ship missions). If Tejas mk 2 is able to supplant Mirage 2000 across the entirety of it performance envelope, then it will truly be the coming of age of India’s military aviation industry.
The biggest difference between the two Aircrafts are the JF 17 is a much more mature platform with weapons and tactics that have been integrated and tested. The LCA has a long way to go. The production line has not ramped up spare part availability is almost nonexistent because all assets and resources are dedicated to production. Unfortunately the LCAis too little too late. A better option would be to slowly phase out the SU 30 completely cancel the MK I and retired to mig21s And only induct the Rafale.

I think you have a calculation mistake, because if the wing span, height, length everything is greater than tejas, as at 3:08 then how is the wing area of JF-17 smaller by 15m2? am I missing something? please can you clarify over my confusion. Thanks.

Jf 17 does resemble to the Russian model ,since that Russia jet had Single rectangular shaped air intake below its fuselage. Jf 17 designe is similar to F 5 and F 20 of us air force which they were designed. only jf 17 has bigger nose cone, mid wing designed and slightly larger LERX. The wings of F 5 and F 20 were not cropped delta , but slightly terpozied at both ends.

I think , air to air missiles which most of countries possess have speed of 4mach and above so fighters with high speed are of not much useful, it should possess good EW and jamming capabilities, which again requires more fuel efficient engine, to power the electronic systems used in process. There are also direct energy weapons which are being designed which also requires more energy. producing engine. So speed will be less useful
So JF-17P can not be a Navy plane unless it is made huge enough to carry big anti ship missile for long distance.
Also, JF-17P is not an Air Force plane with endurance enough to fight an enemy plane unless it made huge to overcome it endurance problem.
