Bio
Kelly Slater was born to surf. He's the epitome of a natural - a guy who was winning surf contests while standing up on a bodyboard at age 6. He can literally ride waves on your front door. He's been famous since he was 12, has been sponsored by Quiksilver since he was 18, is both the oldest world champ ever and the youngest, and wears the crown as the greatest surfer in history.
His accomplishments are the stuff of legend: A record 8 World Titles, 5 Pipe Masters wins, Eddie Aikau win, major label album, best selling autobiography and video game and surf accessory company, host of Sirius Radio show and celebrity surf event in Fiji.
He's incredibly competitive. Once his surf career is over, he wants to be a pro golfer and poker player. When he plays both, he loves to bet and talk trash and hates to lose. He's a big sports fan and loves to watch golf, tennis and basketball on TV. His favorite show is probably Sportscenter, but also loves cheesy stuff like "American Idol." He likes to follow world politics and listen to talk radio.
He lives a rootless life that's a throwback to the nomadic surfers of the 60's and 70's. He travels constantly and doesn't really have a fixed address. If he went on MTV "Cribs" the only thing he'd have to show would be his quiver and travel bag. But here, again, appearances can be deceiving. He drives a fly car (Mercedes SUV) and likes the perks of stardom - courtside Lakers seats, comped suites in Vegas, golf at Riviera, backstage passes, beauty pageant and food judging gigs. He's also ridiculously well connected. He's friends with the likes of Cameron Diaz, Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson.
Kelly's creativity, his fluidity, is probably the most overlooked aspect of his surfing and his life. In his sport, he's redefined and revolutionized performance in all conditions. Tailslides, carving 360's, air reverses, Rodeo Clowns - he either invented or reinvented them all. Today, the best surfers of the world have almost universally adopted his "New School" maneuvers. Because equipment hasn't changed much, if he had never started surfing it's likely that the sport would be stagnant today and everyone would still be riding they way they were in 1989. And all one has to do is watch any new video or pick up a magazine to see that right now he's surfing better than ever. He's still coming up with the most new maneuvers and the most innovative approach to wave riding.

I used to push longboarders off waves alot when i was a kid, at my local spot where it was ok. I didnt run around every where doing that. In fact when i went to other breaks, i was very respectful of the locals. Dont drop in, dont sit right in the middle of the peak, give them there set waves, and basically try and act like your not there. Not like these clowns that think its just all fun and games and have no idea what they are doing and more likely to get someone hurt. Those are the guys we sent down the beach. I just loved seeing the priceless looks on their face when you paddled up to them and told them to get the fuck out, go down the beach and dont come back. I mean, some were just shocked. They didnt come back which creates order and safety for everyone else. That shit is lost with some much commercialization. The kooks just overwhelm a spot with shear numbers and it becomes too much.

I've watched this sequence many times simply because Slater is poetry in motion and inspires me. As for the guy on the yellow board, yeah, who knows what the story is, but the guy is a part of history now.
I watched this video everytime i had a doubt about generating speed, cutback, carving, attacking the lip.. and bottom turns. That was like 13 years ago hahah. Regular wave(similar to a good day at my local point breaks), clean surf, nice soundtrack...watched it a thousand times!
In Kelly's defense of 1:37 there is a video of the full wave somewhere on youtube where you can see the longboarder drop in behind kelly trying to get him to kick out so it was kind of earned

I live in SB and surf rincon pretty much everyday, haha the longboarders are out there hogging all the waves, so sometimes they deserve getting shoved off a wave haha.

I'm from SD surf black beach a lot, but when i took a trip to SB I stopped by rincon, my god it's something I'll never forget, waves there are amazing, locals are super friendly too
Hands down, the greatest surfing moment of that guy at 1:43 was getting dumped by Slater. I would love to be able to tell that story and have a video of it.
Yea...actually that was me. I was surfing at Rincon one day, I drop in and bam...Slater dumps me. Got a nod when he paddled back out. Were tight like that now.

It's no joke Kelly likes to excel at everything he does. You have to admire the incredible skill, technique, and timing of that little calf bump to the nose. Before the bump the guy didn't even see Kelly coiling and eyeing the target, and as he went down their eyes met, and Kelly stared at him intently the whole way down. That's too skillful and funny to get serious about.
I doubt Kelly would risk breaking his ankle or leg like that, he’s too full of himself. I think he was trying to gut the water in front of the guys board to bog him and accidentally clipped him . Looked on purpose

This is my favorite spot to surf IN THE WORLD! Waves arent to big but the form is just good enough to do n e trick u can think of. Plus kelly slater gave us a hint of how to deal with the longboarders:D

Nice work! Slater's ripping that funky little board. I just read about it in Surfer Mag this morning. It looks like fun and it fits the wave curve really well. Shouldn't be long until EVERYONE has one.

Kelly is a kick butt Florida surfer you don't want to mess around with. He out surfs two shoulder hoppers in the beginning and stuffs that kook longboarder around 1:38. Awesome! Kelly was on the inside near the curl, it was his wave, the lonboarder needed to back off.

Kelly Slater has an MFAS degree, Master of the Fine Art of Surfing, saw and met him personally at Malibu once, but imo Rincon is a better canvas. Either location, he owns the longboarders at First Point even on a little 5'6" of a board.

I saw him sufing the Point, out at Pt Dume ages ago on a huge south. Now the entourage that was following him were a bunch of kooks, but he was a different story. Totally respectful and cool. He'd kick out of waves if anyone was behind him even though most of them had no chance of catching him.

Slater was in front so he had the right away plus you give the vet or pro the right away since they have seniority. So if Slater was in front of me even if I started I would pull back since he has earned his right. Dude is bad ass.
@MegaDigidigi I went to Jobos in Puerto Rico, waves were barreling and glassy at about eight feet, sure it was crowded but if you're one of the better surfers out there people don't mess with you.
