Hershey and Chase experiment

In the year 1952 Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase designed a wonderful experiment to prove that the DNA acts as a genetic material.
Hershey and Chase, used radiolabelled phosphate to label the phage DNA and radiolabelled sulphate to label the phage coat proein. when the bacterial cells were infected with these bacteriophage, The bacterial cells showed radioactivity due to labelled phosphate. Based on these obervation, Hershey and Chase proved that the DNA acts as a genetic material.

Why does radioactivity indicate that it was the DNA?

Hershey and chase, used radioactive P32 in the experiment. The P32 makes the DNA radiolabelled. As the radioactive DNA of the bacteriophage enters the bacterial cell, the bacterial cell will now have radioactivity!

I don’t understand….DNA is the genetic material so to prove that shouldn’t it be the stable one and not radioactive? I mean if it is radioactive then how can it transfer genetic information.

It’s not that it is radioactive as in uranium its radioactive in that the machine that they used was set to pick up signatures of the DNA specifically most likely using some form of specialized radio waves being emitted from the DNA. And in the case of the machine that was used to find the Protein, its not that the protein wasn’t being picked up by the machine, its that it was still inside of the phage and was not transferred to the bacteria. Look at the image at 1:27 again and you’ll see that the phages on the left are glowing green (showing that the protein is still inside of the phage, whereas the DNA has been transferred over to the Bakteria)
