Pickup Shootout: Fender/Duncan vs Fleor!

- A quick between the stock Fender single coils and the Seymour Duncan SSL-1 that I'd been using in my 2011 Standard USA Strat, and a new set of Fleor Alnico V single coils.
I was finding the Fenders to be a bit to "boomy" in the bass, and the Seymour, whilst it was great, didn't really mix well with the stock pickups.
Swapping the whole lot out for a crazy cheap set of Fleors has improved things a lot. The difference is subtle, but it's there. Stronger top end, less boom in the bass and much more "Stratty" in-between sounds.
All in all, very happy with the swap!
You can get a set for under $25 here:

Fleor actually sounded as good, if not better than the others...and I'm a pickup snob
I love FLEOR pickups myself, but I thought they both sounded great. True, the FLEOR's are brighter and I think a little more articulate with the distortion, but the Fender neck sounded better in the clean tone.
Crazy how good the Fleors sound! I bought a P90 neck & an AlnicoV "Rails" humbucker 9-10k (low-med output) for an "economy Telecaster project" (Indio brand). In case I don't like the rails, I also got a backup AlnicoV Single Coil Bridge Pickup. All for very little cash!
Watched a bunch of Fleor comparison videos, but the comparison with the fender was what I was looking for. My Squier is going to sound so awesome!
Well? Did it sound awesome? Was it worth it? Was it on a Squire Affinity?
I liked the Fender neck, the FLEOR middle, and the Duncan bridge.
Thanks for the advice on the Fleors Pete!
Wow, the Fleor pickups sound great! Thanks for this great demo. I had never heard of them before but will definitely check them out.
Oh yeah and nice playing too!
I have bought a set new, but on second hand market, for 20 Euros. I just mounted them today in my '95 MIM Strat, and i'm really really happy with them. Caution! Be extremely careful about the set up and height of the pickups. At first it was a complete mess and super muddy on the neck pickup, but as soon as I found the sweat spot, and made a complete set up it played and sounded like a dream. Probably the difference comes from going from ceramic to AlNiCo. I also upgraded the volume pot with a 250K logarithmic CTS pots, I'm not sure that's what makes it soung good ,but the progressivity of the pot is great and the contol is excellent whitout sucking tone at all.
All this costed me the price of 2 packs of cigarettes. Just great
A really good Review, Thanks.
Just loaded my 60's Classic Vibe Squier Strat with a set of 3 Fleor pickups I brought new for $22!!! at Amazon. Totally satisfied! And they are made near Athens GA USA !!!
Hell yes! Nice to see a lefty out there in youtube land!
Fleor single coils always reminds me the Texas Specials. Bright, clear, top end open sound and good sustain.
Several guitars upgraded with Fleor pickups and always blown away at the sound you can get for 1/10th the price. Did a chender tele with Fleor pups and a 4 way switch and quickly became my number 1.
Awesome!! Can you please send me the link for the tele pickups? Thank u :)
Any idea how they compare to Donlis?
Wow - shocked, especially for the bridge dirty sound, preferred the Fleors
I did everything but this pick-up switch on my Squier bullet strat. After the Fleor's it will be an outstanding guitar. Thanks for helping with this decision. Going to take a look at your other stuff.
Hi! I want to upgrade my Squier Bullet Strat. In your opinion what are the better upgrades?
No bad tones here !
Fleor is a clear winner, because of the price. Sound is really similar.
I like the fleor bridge and middle the neck is not quite as articulate as I would prefer....I could work with any neck pick up though. Great demo.
Fender : Neck and middle - 0:43 / 0:55
Fleor : Neck and middle - 1:10 / 1:25
FLEOR win for me (Sound and Price$)
A big Irony, fender stratocaster stock pickups sounding as not as straty as Fleor pickups do.
Maybe its me, but I also perceive some kind of muddyness in the Fender Stocks. Still they sound fine. On the other hand, there are subtle clarity in the fleors, great comparison!
I agree. The Fenders were getting muddy on overdrive. The Fleors were more articulate. I'm going to try some out.
That's an interesting comparison... nicely played and a guitar in tune... :-)
To be honest, I don't hear a significant difference between stock and cheap fleor pickups. These pickups appear to be a great choice for a modding project!
Thanks a lot!
What's your own opinion?
My experience is that FLEORs are poorly balanced, typically being saturated in either highs, or mids and are all thin, in the low end. They have their place and can be a nice upgrade for some pickups, as long as you manage expectations. I mean, if my stock Fender, or Ibanez pickup failed, I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with a FLEOR. But, I wouldn't expect it to be an upgrade. A major plus, is that they're so inexpensive (and returnable) that you can try several different models; the 'High Output Ceramic' is a decent humbucker, but the 'hot rail' is too thin and raspy.
Dragonfire makes some great models, like the Phat Screamer and will likely end up as a 'premium' brand. Im interested in Oripure, but cant find any good reviews for them; at ~$40, they're a bit riskier than a $12 FLEOR.
Bottom line, is that most mainstream branded instruments these days, have pretty good stock pickups, that can be hard to beat at any price.
@@springbloom5940Hi! Thanks for your reply.
Finally, I ordered a set of Fleor Alnico 5 Single Coils and put them into my old second hand Harley Benton Strat. The guitar's stock ceramic pups weren't bad before the swap, but now the guitar sounds really great... Exactly what I was hoping for. :)
Wax potting was perfect (but the Telecaster bridge pickup I ordered some weeks before, was microphonic as hell).
Price for the whole set: 23 EUR (eBay).

Glad to hear it!
nice comparison!
is that alnico V fleor?
Fleor sounds better than the Fender originals, and you can get a complete loaded pick-guard for the cost on one Fender single coil,or half a Seymore Duncan.
What is the DCR on the Fleor bridge pickup?
I think the FLEOR should be set closer to the strings than the fenders in order to boost the tone, especially with overdrive sound. doing so they would be closer to the sound of the fenders. All in all they look great, now I'm getting a test one for my squier.
Thank you for the video ! I'm searching for 50's 60's strat sound (preferences for 50's), for exemple i love CUSTOM SHOP CUSTOM '69 ! then TEXAS SPECIAL ! Can you say me which FLEOR pick up to pick ^^ in this style sound ? Thank you !
I'm not sure what they've got, but if you message them on AliExpress they're pretty good at being helpful.
@@ptfguitarist2978 I have tried, but they say to me that they don't copy the sound of other pick ups lol. I have to be smarter to obtain a good answer lol. Thank you ;)
Thanks for posting this. Is the Fleor noiseless?
Nope
What amp did you use? sounds amazing
Thanks man. It's a Line 6 hd500x
For some reason, the Fenders sound muddy to me but that could just be the EQ'ing. The Fleor pickups are snappy, tight and they sparkle. Great options for pickups.
I had the exact opposite feeling!
Is it worth upgrading the stock Squire Afinitty pickups to the Fleor alnico pickups?
Well, "worth it" depends on whether you prefer the sound. But for the price, I'd certainly give it a try and see what you think.
Shootout to all da leftyz in da houz!
A brother South Paw!!
Guitar pickups are some magnets, some wire, some plastic bobbins and that's about it. Other than the knowledge of how many turns, gauge of wire and type of magnet. The people at Fleor have figured out the recipe and their pickups sound fantastic! No need to waste money on "boutique" brands. They must have a 400% margin on their overpriced pickups. People pay for the name. Dumb.
the fleors are amazing for forty bucks
Those Fleor pups have a bit more "bite" I think...like a set of Tex-Mex pups :)
Do the fleors have staggered poles?
You can get them both ways, they sound great. The qc is inconsistent so sometimes the pickups are not potted properly and are microphonic.
Fleor (6$ per pick-up) best of c.s. pick-up Fender
The title should be renamed to"Why the big name pickups are a scam."
i like Fleor pickup!it's sound more like nako sing!
FLEOR'S SOUND SO MUCH MORE CLEAN AND NOT MUDDY!
Incleible fleor wins now
靠背我以為Fleor PICKUP是customshop!竟然是陸製pickup
I didn't find either one sounded very good. Maybe it was the amp. Not very clear and not much note separation.
I liked the Fender/Seymour better in this test. Subjectively speaking, they have a more "open" sound, "more 3D", more "depth"! In objective terms, more pleasant harmonics. It is important to highlight that the sound volume has a great impact on the subjective evaluation and it seems to me that in this test the Fleor pickups sound quieter than the Fender/Seymour. From my own experience, a 90-degree turn of the pickup height adjustment screws significantly changes the tone.
Fleor sings.better stratty tones

people cares too much about the pickups... theres no sense with all process we have today, IR, amp sim, pedals, softwares...
I'd agree to a point. Different pickups can change how a guitar responds to your playing. But I think the assumption that more expensive pickups are automatically going to sound "better" is a fallacy.
Fleor sounded horrible.
Fleor sounds really bad to me, fender and duncans are good.
So why are we listening to overdriven pickups from 3 brands?... same old nonsense all over again.
Thanks for the comment, Doug. Sorry this wasn't what you were looking for.
