There are a few British youtube gardeners out there that should have a similar growing zone :) Other than the wonderful Project diaries there are a few other good ones: Charles Dowding, Huw Richards, Liz Zorab ~ and I'm in the UK and made a courgette video too :)
Wanda Wizard Yeah. Im a complete noob. I dont know anything. Coronavirus has convinced me to start a garden. I fear the supply chain on fresh produce may get disrupted. Went to Home Depot to get some stuff at 6am - I got to go back tomorrow for stuff I didnt know to get.
I've been growing my own plants too due to coronavirus and having the time now I'm stuck at home. I'm pleased the way they've all come along especially as I'm a novice and it's my 1st time growing plants. I'm growing green beans, peas, new potatoes, old potatoes (in a potato grow bag), carrots, onions, peppers, cucumber & courgettes all in containers as my back is slabbed. I've also been doing pots of green beans, peas, carrots and potatoes for both sets of parents as they are getting on and it's less hassle for them receiving them when they are almost ready and being in containers obviously makes them convenient to drop off to them. It seems that a lot more people are doing the same and I think it's a fantastic thing. I have really enjoyed growing them (which I didn't think I would as I did it to be prepared & to save money) It's actually very satisfying seeing them grow & quite therapeutic too. I'll be doing this every year from now on.
@@ThePp12345678 Me also a novice at growing due to c/v, I found a nice company called urban sprout and the seeds are growing rapidly . They do boxes with an assortment of veg in and it seems like good quality /value , Best of luck with yours !
Hi, I'm a learner gardener and am starting with my own SFG. I've checked out a lot of videos and channels but I have found yours to be the easiest to understand and I'm not feeling so intimidated anymore. Thank you so much, I look forward to more videos :)
I'm so glad I can help you. Have you joined my gardening group to share your progress? I'd love to see how you're getting on facebook.com/groups/projectdiariesHQ/
We love the way you explain, simple and easy, not complicated! Watching from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 and loving preparing our vegetable garden. All seedlings growing well and time today to replant my zucchinis in bigger pots, they already grew quite fast.
I just want to say, i really appreciate your videos! You have lots of knowledge and present without "preaching" certain ideologies ( this is the best fertilizer, u must do that...) plus, having a backyard in Berlin, i cannot really relate to gardening in, say, california or whatsoever. Plus your ideas for gardening on a budget: just lov it
We've just emptied out our compost heap after about 20 years!!!! and have the most beautiful, friable compost, and loads of it. We've just been given a free courgette plant, and I'm planning to grow it in a rubble bag filled with some of this great compost. Thanks for confirming that I won't need to feed the plant at all! I'm planning to put a cane in and try it vertically, as I've seen in other videos. Fingers crossed for a successful initiation into growing courgettes!
My Zucchini seedlings are ready to be potted and I have saved some quite large pots for the job. Thanks for this video it was a help. I am sorry about your bad weather. We have been having a bit of rainy weather here in the US too, where i am in Michigan. Lots of rain and cloud cover. I am thankful for my sunroom. Had to get my trees planted though and I have gotten caught out in the rain doing it. I actually threw my lower back out digging holes so I am in my chair now on my ice pack. Hope to be in the garden soon though.
Oh no! I hope your bad gets better soon. I did that a few times last year and it's not fun at all. I'm glad you like my video. Good luck growing and get well soon :)
I love the specific guidance on safer use lf plastics 5:33 - polypropylene, not polystyrene and look for a number 5 in the container’s embossed triangle 🤩
These things are prolific. The first time I grew them was in South Africa and I didn't know any veggie growers. Imagine my surprise when they were fruiting as I had 10 plants. Courgettes for breakfast, lunch and dinner! We live and learn.
Hello from Slovenia! I live 1000m asl, so at thet time we still have 50cm of snow. I start my cukini just like you, but in may i put them in 50cm sheep pup with just 10cm gardening soil on top. Last year I had 148 cukinis just from two plants in ej 2 m2. They was Elite F1 hibrid, grow in bush. Leaves were over 50cm large. And it was a fresh menure. I like your videos aaaaa looooot!!!!!
Hey there project diaries can I just say I am a big fan of your channel who ever needs gardening advice I always give your channel to watch to get a hint . Could you please if you don't mind make videos about pollination and how to transfer Avocado to ground and marigold flowers harvest and planting
Hi Hamskiiee, I've actually been working on several videos on pollination. I'm also waiting for another Avocado tree to reach the age of transfer so I can make that video. My Marigolds are really having a tough time growing in all this cold weather this year but once they have i'll be able to finish that video to. I'm glad you like my channel :)

Best tip I got today was using a spoon to spoon out the seedlings. Thank you (why didn't I think of that) (and pulling out the roots, need to remember that)
We are having the same problems here in N.W. Kansas, USA. Hail storm last night wiped out my entire garden. I will start again in a day or two and hope it is not too late.
Last weeks frost nearly too out everything but yesterday was the hottest day of the year and I'm now stuck indoors as we have thunder storms. Global warming at its worst!
Global Warming? People still believe that gargantuan lie, wow. You should read what 30,000 scientists have to say about it:www.naturalnews.com/055151_global_warming_science_hoax_climate_skepticism.html
Ahh you just saved me from planting these in the beds, so I am going to pop them in pots. Sad to see they didn’t do so well at the end, and the weather sadly doesn’t always help but Thankyou for your very helpful videos !
Very valid remarks regarding weather - very pertinent now in 2022. The compost level had shrunk well down by the end of your film so that your plants were, in effect, in quite small pots. Was that acceptable, or were you tempted to add more compost? Perhaps under the plant? Thanks for such clear content.
I'm so glad I found your video, I just seeded my first courgette. I wished I would have done it before when we had 3 days of beautiful weather.... ah well! I dont have much space in my garden, and my house too. I'm thinking to have a Green house ( plastic and simple) medium size... just wondering if they could survive this unpredictable english weather? Tomorrow rain again...........
Love your vids. I'm growing pot zucchinis for first time - think I've added too many seeds to the pot and they all are growing. Damn, I'd really worry if that was the colour of our rain water!
Mine have started giving fruits about a week ago in Ireland. I pick them quite small as I enjoy them more like that. How long can I expect them to fruit for? Great videos. Thanks
I realize this was 2 years ago, but I've found that using a high speed steel drill bit is better to keep a pot that is plastic from splitting. Doesn't damage the drill bit. I like an 8.
Another very useful vid, my man. My courgettes are at the 5 week stage now and I am putting them out this week.I had a bit of slug/snail damage while they were in the small pots, but with your marvellous slug trap design, (Waitrose coffee cups (posh, eh?) and Guinness) I am confident of success. Keep on keeping on, chap. By the way, have you got any more of your own guitar work recorded?
Not up to you to decided that! Fingerstyle sadly lacking these days ,sorry to say, so your skill is needed in music as well as in the garden. I am trying to make a Bass out of pallet wood, to see if low frequency vibrations will deter the voracious slugs. Works for snakes apparently: well I haven't got snakes here in Stamford, so maybe it does work.
Awesome video - thanks so much. Can I ask why you keep the compost a few inches below the edge of the container/is there a particular reasoning behind that? Thank you!
Our previous snowfall just completely thawed out, and it is getting warm, so hopefully no more frost for this year, and I can start planting soon. I started doing a few sprouts indoors on the kitchen window sill.

Mystery solved! I didn’t know what courgettes were. I just added some to the stew I’m making. Just like tomatoes 🍅 zucchini add a lot of flavor to recipes.
Got the zucchini from the local farmers market. It was unmarked as to whether it were organic--some smaller growers are but don't list themselves as such. Also I checked my summer squash seeds both packets are from Baker's Creek Seeds (GMO doesn't belong in the same sentence with them.) One kind is Straight Necked Yellow Squash. The other is a Lebanese White Bush Marrow. Last time the borers got to my squash first. I'm going to try to research how to better protect my plants. Take care!
Love your videos... I planted dwarf zucchinis inside my house under lights, I have baby zukes growing. It c an be done. Weather here inhibits zuke growing I had to do something. :)
where there's a will there's a way! Even here in the UK, some places manage to grow exotic things if they have the right greenhouse conditions. Anything's possible :)
can you get row cover? i had to grow this entire season under row cover for the first time it was so cool at night all summer long. real weird. also used fresh grass around the plants bc it makes such hot compost and it saved all my plants having piles of grass around them and cover.
These are same as Summer squash? I sowed them in a 1 x 1 feet growbag thinking I can transplant them and only 3 germinated luckily. Should I transplant them to 1 per growbag or leave them as such? Would they survive a transplantation?
I sowed 3 Zucchini seeds in a seed tray and all 3 germinated. When they were big enough, I transplanted them in to mesh seedling bags. When they show signs of roots coming through the bags I shall transplant them in my allotment in their final growing space. I also sowed some Zucchini seeds in 3" pots, but these are yet to show any shoots (They are 10 days behind the others though. Finally I sowed some Zucchini seeds in a raised bed on my allotment and these were showing some life when I visited it last week. I prefer to call them courgettes and am only calling these ones Zucchini as that is the name of the variety. I am aware that Americans call all courgettes Zucchinis.
Hi, my courgettes are still in the conservatory, I have repotted them a couple of times and they are flowering. I am going to repot them again this coming week before moving them outside. I noticed you only filled the container about 3/4 full, is there any particular reason? I haven't fed them yet but as I have repotted them with fresh potting soil I figured they would have enough nutrients. This is my first year growing anything so I was really surprised at how quickly they established them selves but I went overboard and am now trying to find good homes for some of them with family. What do you recommend for food, I was just going to feed them with tomatoes good?
Well done. Try not to transplant them too many times. I leave a lip from the soil for balance and it also allows the water to stay in the pot. I never usually fill any final pot to the top. Yes! Feed them like Tomatoes as they start to flower. They don't need much but like a boost. Could you share some photos on my gardening group? facebook.com/groups/projectdiariesHQ/
Thanks for sharing. I have planted some courgette in this manner and put them on the windowsill. After sprouting it grew leaves in one day. The next day it closed its leaves. It's stem doubled in size in one day as well. Should I worry about the leaves closing during the day?
Hi, winter here in New Zealand and I am experimenting with growing courgettes by wrapping the pots in bubble wrap. I perhaps should have started the seeds off in summer, but at least they all germinated. Guess I am going to find out if it is the soil temp alone that determines season or the leaves also need higher temps.
True, just been watching news on single use plastics and decided I am part of the problem. Until we have environmentally sound products made from materials like Cannabis Hemp, I will do my best to avoid plastics in future.
Try looking for Polylactic acid (PLA) Plastics. The only issue with these is that they need to be listed under the RIC code (7) which is also the same number so many harmful plastcis
I have some large containers im using to make homemade compost in so food scraps, leaves and cardboard are in there but not very broken down yet as only been a few weeks. Could you top these up with compost and grow courgettes in them or would this not be good?
Obviously your season has probably finished, but maybe you could use this for next season - yes! I do believe that that would be advisable, the half broken down material would continue releasing nutrients over the growing period, you should be able to get some nice courgettes!
You’re one of the few RUclips gardeners that seem to

I mention that in the Powdery white mildew video

They worked really well for me in pots. Make sure they're really big pots though for the best chance of a good yield :)

That was really useful thank you 👍🏻

Damn, I'd really worry if that was the colour of our rain water!

Thank you for a great video!
Loved this😊
Good video because the same thing happen to my zucchini in 2020 lol weather changes really set me back for my container harvest

Thanks! :)
I think this is normal as the plant changes according to how much light its getting
thanks more videos😃
You're welcome :)
Can you use mushroom
Compost or
Your home made banana tea to fertilise courgettes and cucumbers??
Hi, winter here in New Zealand and I am experimenting with growing courgettes by wrapping the pots in bubble wrap. I perhaps should have started the seeds off in summer, but at least they all germinated. Guess I am going to find out if it is the soil temp alone that determines season or the leaves also need higher temps.
The whole plant needs warmth and sunlight in order to grow well. Bubble wrap is also made from a toxic plastic and can leach into your soil and plant
Do you cover the propagator tray with a lid after sowing the seeds?
I don't as Grandad heating is constantly on but you may have to if it gets colder over night :)
