4:27 Personally, being Asian, I quite like leaving some of them to grow to marrow size. At the size shown, I peel them and use them in a stir fry - they are still quite tender and the seeds are soft and edible so there is no waste. The larger ones can be sliced lengthwise and stuffed with minced pork (once de-seeded) and baked - yum! Leave the skin on to hold it together during cooking. That means you can use courgettes at three stages of development for different dishes.
Thank you so much for all the details. Most videos don't go to so much detail and leave you a lot of information that a new gardener would want and need.
I have to debunk the idea that larger courgettes are somehow inferior to smaller ones, they're not. I've grown absolute whoppers, really heavy ones which are solid all the way through with loads of flavour, and no pesticides or artificial growth enhancers. It's been few years since I last grew them but will do so again next year, having been recovering from a major op. The variety I've grown are Defender which give a really good yield from not many plants, so much so I can't keep up with production. My favourite way to cook them is with garlic, seasoning and a good strong cheese & chilli. Yum
Hi Sarah....just binge watched all your videos on RUclips. Ive loved every one! So much good advice. Perch Hill looks so beautiful. Thanks for taking the time.
Dear Sarah, I just discovered your videos whilst researching cosmos. Love love love your work! Great information! Thank you! Kind regards from Texas❤️🇬🇧
My dear Sarah, now I must say what you surely deserve and heard many times, you are absolutely great! Now this IS the best video I’ve seen on these vegetables. I have ONE plant, now I know what to do with it!!! Thank you 😊
Although I have been gardening for years, I only planted my first courgette this year. I was always put off by the size of the plant, but I have to admit I am pleasantly surprised....it is in my flower border producing a load of flowers and putting many flowering plants to shame. So I will definitely be repeating the experience next year.
In a sufficient amount of time you thoroughly walked us through the best varieties, how to sow seed, when to harvest and how to maintain healthy plants. Zucchini, as we call them here in the USA grow prolifically in our zone 5b and so it is helpful to know how to properly corral them for the best production. Plus the chive tea is so helpful as I have problems with powdery mildew. Thank you very much!
Thank you for this...so glad you mentioned the flowers which in my Italian household growing up were made into delicious frittatas. Totally makes sense harvesting the courgettes when smaller! ☺️
I know Im asking randomly but does someone know of a method to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost the account password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
@Jerry Houston i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Fantastic video - I've just started gardening and also growing veg' and I bought two small courgette plants from the garden centre. I didn't even realise they grew horizontally! As they got bigger & bigger I discovered this video and now I know so much - thank you. Great advice on the size to harvest. My leaves wilt badly if I don't give then huge amounts of water in warm weather but I picked my first Courgette today - it feels like a great achievement! Fair to say I am hooked on gardening and will continue to try and learn from gurus like yourself. Thank you for taking the time.
Thank you Sarah, I’ve had patchy results in the past owing to the instructions on the seed packet “ sow on their sides”. I’ve therefore sowed them horizontally but sowing them vertically has given me better results.
I didn't have any trouble with slugs with my courgettes - fingers crossed for you :) If you have them in pots I hear copper tape along the top may prevent them crawling in. Or beer traps if in ground.
This was great thank you! First go with courgettes and trying in pots because I got a bit carried away soing carrots and leaks! Would companion planting chives nearby help with mildew or does it have to be the "chive tea"?
Brilliant video. Thank you! I’ve been growing yellow courgettes but each leaf is gradually dying and the courgettes turn rotten and don’t grow very big
I've even heard some people say they cook the courgette stems and eat them like pasta! Even the young leaves are edible apparently. They smell delicious on the plant :)
Excuse my ignorance but i will soon be moving to west ireland so trying to learn as much as i can while i wait. Will all the advise in these fantastic videos work in west ireland climate?
Courgettes are called zucchini here in the United States and they grow 3-4 times bigger. They taste great if you sauté them in garlic, pepper salt and olive oil.
I think we've all grown too many courgettes at one time and ended up eating them in every conceivable way for breakfast lunch and tea. That was my abiding memory of my first year on the allotment I had. I took it over in winter and the only legacy was a huge rhubarb which I divided in to about 8 separate plants. I'm surprised I didn't die from a combination of Rhubarb and courgette overdose. That would be a gruesome way to go........!
Hi Annette, courgettes tend to start off with more male flowers than female, but then get more female flowers (and therefore fruit) later on. Good luck 🙂.
Have just read that home grown courgettes can be poisonous!! Have I spent all the summer looking after my plants only to find there really poisonous, apparently if they are cross pollinated, are mine cross pollinated? I've grown veg during lock down basically for something to do so really dont know much about growing ! Apparently squash and cucumbers can also be poisonous!!
Generally speaking only if the courgettes / squash taste bitter they could be poisonous and are best discarded. If they taste sweet or neutral they should be safe :)
If you can't get hold of manure use compost, if you can't get compost use fertilizers such as chicken pellets, bonemeal, growmore etc etc. Additionally most of the plants Sarah grows will be fine in West Ireland.

I have been gardening for decades and this is the best video I have seen about courgettes! Thank you!
fantastic… not only great tips on courgette but mildrew fix too … many thanks
Learn something new from Ms. Sarah every time I watch a new video....thanks....

Would be grateful if you could advise if you know if there is an additional ratio of water to make chive tea?
Thank you for this...so glad you mentioned the flowers which in my Italian household growing up were made into delicious frittatas. Totally makes sense harvesting the courgettes when smaller! ☺️

Love, love LOVE courgettes. Thank you for yet another brilliant tutorial. X

I love the flowers. They are super tasty fried in light batter the large ones stuff with a little bit of mozerella. Yum.
Sarah - your videos are amazing. I learn SOOOO much from them. Thank you.
Thanks for all this info on courgettes!! Cant wait to grow my first courgettes this year 😃
Thank you for sharing. I will definitely be eating my zucchini at that gorgeous smaller size. And I need to try stuffing the flowers too.
Powering through your wonderful videos - what a great way to starts Sunday morning!
Excellent video. Thank you. My first attempt at growing them.😮
Thank you so much for this very informative video. I loved the chive tea tip at the end too!
Thanks for this. Very informative and clear advice and instructions - hope I get to my courgettes before the slugs
I didn't have any trouble with slugs with my courgettes - fingers crossed for you :) If you have them in pots I hear copper tape along the top may prevent them crawling in. Or beer traps if in ground.
Courgettes flowers close up in the afternoon so the best time to pick them is in early morning while they are fully open.
Many thanks. Answered my questions. Excellent video. Well done!
will try out these tips this summer, thank you!
Didn’t know you could remove leaves. Brilliant!
How do you take the tea off the bottom if using a bucket for instance? Great video by the way, very interesting and useful, thank you!
Thank you..for more insight than I had for growing courgette.
This was such an informative video, I learned so much! Thank you 😊
Beautifully explained, thank you very much!
This was great thank you! First go with courgettes and trying in pots because I got a bit carried away soing carrots and leaks! Would companion planting chives nearby help with mildew or does it have to be the "chive tea"?

I have the same problem. I think this happens when they aren’t pollinated. I’m going to try pollinating with a male flower to see if that solves it.
@@valerygoat oh thanks I’m going to try the same. Let me know how you get on :)
I Just love it... I wish could do them more often... Greetings from Croatia...
Very good video Thank You ❤
Wow, I've just learnt so much! No idea I could eat the male courgette flowers, or that they had male and female!

Thank you, really helped me.
Thank you very much!
This was fantastic, thank you!
Can both the male and female flowers be stuffed? And with what? I take it that a tempura batter is not to do with stuffing? sorry for any confusion!
Thanks Sarah great vlog.
Nice video thank you.
Nice presentations.
Amazing woman - thank you
What about pest type and control? The heart of mine are being eaten out and I dont know how to fix!

Thanks for great video - is there a reason I have only 1 female courgette so far and all the others in flower seem to be male 😳
Hi Annette, courgettes tend to start off with more male flowers than female, but then get more female flowers (and therefore fruit) later on. Good luck 🙂.

Bitterness equals nutritious
They are from Cyprus. Then the Turks and after the occupation the Greeks if I am not mistake
Does anyone else find this a little bit rude? ;) Great video though
