Crazy to run across a review about this camera. The 5D was my first DSLR, bought in 2006. I bought a second several months back as a backup. I use it regularly, however I put in a split-image finder years ago and use it almost exclusively with M42 manual lenses with the camera set to B&W mode. This camera got me deep into the A-Mount lenses and several of the Minolta film bodies as well, and also DSLR upgrades to the A700 then a99-ii, then a side trip with an a900. But with the a700 and the rest, Sony changed something in the firmware with how B&W gets processed and the images do not have the same feel as they do straight out of the 5D. I've taken >26,000 with the 5D and it's still going strong (but yeah, a little loud). My biggest issue for years was an incessant back-focus issue with the autofocus; resolved by adjusting some hidden hex-screws under the bottom label around the tripod mount (reference the 7D repair manual).
People are interested in older cameras, even one like this! I still use the camera (I have 2), and with a few lenses, the last remnants I have left from A mount. The Sony cameras were not as good ergonomically IMO, and the output wasn't as nice as the 5/7D models. Also there were some obvious gaps in the system never updated (70-210mm F4 being the most glaring). I did try the A900 and liked the viewfinder, the SLT stuff I never really warmed to at all. Then E mount turned up and Sony put A mount on the back burner, design wise I just didn't like E mount at all. Sentimental or not, the output on this camera was and remains very nice, and as you say the B&W is great straight out of camera. I found the AF accuracy pretty good on these 2, but some cameras did need adjusting.
@@markschneider3915 Lol the old Sony's look better than the new ones too! I have an A100 in for review the first one that came after this, then I will make a comparison video A100, A200 v KM5D! Should be interesting!
I agree. I started my CCD journey with the sony a100 and it led me to the 7D. Its a much better feeling camera, even tho i loved the a100 i still think the 6.1mp sensor is better. Taking the a100 above 400 iso isnt very nice
I could never quite warm to the 10mp CCD, might re-take a look at the A100 at some point. As you say I felt the higher ISO wasn't that good it suffered at ISO 800/1600 quite a bit, where as the 6mp CCD didn't. I did try the A200, that was cut back a bit in features/build, but has a somewhat different look to the A100. It did improve the AF speed though.

I'm sorry I missed this camera when it first came out, nikon D50 was my first dslr. Picked a 5D up only a couple of months ago and really liking the colours.. But it has left me wondering, what cameras would konica minolta be manufacturing if they had not sold the camera business to sony? Come to think of it kodak, the mind boggles as to the reasoning in selling thier image sensor business. Maybe kodak knew in the long run they couldn't compete with sonys image sensors business. Thanks for the video s
Funny thing is at the time I was going to get a Nikon D50, but this has the mirror lock up, DOF preview and wireless flash, and the viewfinder was slightly larger. Just a few things which I liked. But flaws and all I still like it a lot. Minolta was more of a bang per buck company v Canikon, they offered a bit more. But they were late entering the DSLR game too late, and the 7D was probably too expensive. It's a real shame because the company had some great ideas like Anti Shake. I don't see any Minolta in Sony these days unfortunately, Thanks for dropping in.
So can you still send it back for repairs? I just got a 5D yesterday (which works wonderfully), but can ti be fixed then if the problem apears in the future?
No not to Sony, they did offer a repair service and this stopped some years ago (not sure when exactly), I believe they offered an A100 replacement to some too. There might be independent workshops that can do a repair, but it's likely on salvaged parts. It's probably not cost effective for the 5D or 7D for a repair, I'd just use it if you have a problem get another one used. One body I have was fixed a long time ago and it's not had an issue since, some have but it doesn't seem common once it is repaired.
I have two KM 5Ds too, one bought way back then and a more recent back-up one like you. The only annoying issue I ever had with it was that focus was always slightly off when I used the Minolta 500mm Reflex lens on it. When I later got a Sony A550, that issue went away. Some people think 6 Mpixels is too low a pixel count in a camera. I watch most pictures on HD TV, which at most has two million pixels to display. And I'm pretty sure I'd have a hard time noticing the pixel deficit if I put a 6 Mpixel picture on a 4K Ultra HD TV, which has 8 million pixels. Regards.
AF can vary on bodies I was lucky with my 2, seem mostly accurate with multiple lenses. 6mp is OK you have to be a bit more careful with composition, not much room for cropping, still you can get decent prints from the camera. I did a 16 x 12" that looked pretty good to me
@@MrBazReviews Thanks. Also, don't forget there are some lenses which just don't autofocus accurately in any Minolta or Sony camera (including A7 with LA-EA4 adapter) - I have a Sigma 28-300mm zoom to atest to this. And a 400mm Tamron. I'm not surprised about your 16X12" print. I remember back in the late 1990s, people at work who were members of camera clubs were laughing at me for still shooting film. They said that the new 3 Mpixel cameras were out, and that one could get beautiful A4 sized printouts. Later I bought a Nikon P4500 with 4 Mpixels - and was surprised when the manual said that at 300dpi, the biggest print was 7.5x 5.5 inches - which is a lot smaller than A4. Plainly, if one sees little squares in the print, there aren't enough Mpixels in the picture. But if one can only see the graininess in a print by using a .magnifying glass - does it really matter?. Cheers.
@@The157ra I've mostly found it body related for AF issues, but some say the odd rogue lens can be an issue. I had a tokina 11-16mm nice lens but on some bodies off on AF, could be adjusted, some bodies alright. Print size is more than 300dpi, that's what I tell people, 2-3mp was an issue but less of a problem 6/8mp and up. You can't crop much but you can still get decent prints from 6mp. I was never into the pixel race anyway, even though I have a 36mp D800, I didn't get it for pixels and I don't use them all anyway!
@@MrBazReviews I'm with you on the print/pixel matter. I recently printed out an A4 sized baby picture that I got from a compressed Jpeg on Messenger - some three or 400 Kilobytes. Was it great? - no. Was it okay enough to stick on a wall? My niece took it away to stick on her wall. Way back in 2006 I bought a 15mm and an 11-19mm Sigma EX lens for my KM5D. They both wouldn't focus right. I drove to the Sigma service centre, where I was having an argument with the staff, who were saying there must be something wrong with my camera body. The argument escalated and the boss came out. He said, get me the 7D body, and out they came with a KM7D body to which he attached each lens and took photos across the street. He looked at the pictures in the viewfinder and said "These lenses don't work - send them back and get him new ones". The new ones showed up a month later, and they worked perfectly. Cheers.
@@The157ra At the time I mostly used Tamron lenses (screw drive ones), 17-50mm, 90mm Macro etc. I sort of stayed away from Sigma. Nowadays I'm hearing about Tamron AF motors failing (quite a lot of them in many lenses), so I'm avoiding Tamron mostly and using a few Sigma ones. It might be firmware issues, I know in the SLT era some Sigma lenses didn't work. Hard to say what the issue is, but I found third party stuff OK with A Mount. I have quite a few Tokina now for F Mount and no problems, might get a few more. Have the 5D's left on A Mount and a few lenses
The screen is a parallax barrier display so when you tilt it you can see if you blow out the highlights or shadows. Looks like a hologram but you see where it clips even in daylight. These sensors will blow highlights easily so I tend to underexpose
I mention about this v the A100. But really it depends what you want. If you look at something like the A200 which has reduced controls and only a single top plate dial, then this is clearly better. You could argue make it an ISO dial, but then how to change that with the eye to viewfinder holding the lens? The good part is you're much more likely to use the WB settings on this camera, as it has that dial. A100 puts a lot more function on the dial, but loses the Fn menu and ISO button - that's not ideal either.
I have this sometimes on one body, it's like pink bands on the image, but it doesn't do it often. I also get amp glow on some shots in the corners. I believe these issues are related to the first black frame issue on the shutter. The second body I still have doesn't show any of these issues, I sent it in for a warranty repair on the black frame issue and it's not shown the problem since.
@@MrBazReviews I hadn't used it for a few years since owning the A57. Perhaps I'll do a reset then fire off a few shots and remove the battery and repeat and see what happens. Shame, really such a great camera.
@@MrBazReviews Well, how odd. It is not the sensor. If I use single frame, the image is either white or the pink I mentioned. @@brentwestbrook From what I gather people have different experiences with 5D's that have the black frame problem. Ranging from not working or taking photos, to sometimes/often doing weird things. The one I have did a few times show the banding issue pink etc. It does at times lock up with the error message, but mostly at shutter speeds above 1/400s. Sometimes you get the amp/pink effect mild in the corners or edge, but if you take 2 shots one straight after the second image is fine.
