  • Vintage cameras are all the rage, and typically for good reason too! They often offer a different look than more modern photographic tools. But, these cameras are often 15-20+ years old and issues can crop up. Today, I wanted to share my personal experience with a camera that unexpectedly died right after I got it.

    Ive been using my 7d pretty consistently for about 3 years now....when i bought it, it was like brand new almost as if nobody ever used it. Never had any issues except the back focus issue that i fixed. Hoping im not on borrowed time because its basically my favorite camera ever.

      Yeah hopefully you got one out of a better batch than I did! I hope it keeps working for a long time! It's possible you may never run into that issue I had.

    Oh dear.
    I've just pulled mine out of storage after 10 years. It along with the original battery still works. The only thing not working is the USB connection.
    I bought it years ago second hand when my Minolta 35mm started playing up, that way i could use the lens (still works). But now I'm thinking getting the Sony 6700 and an adaptor.
    I wouled have thought the dampness in the fridge would be really bad for it and would have been more likely to put it in a bag of salt
    I'm sad it never worked it for you.

      Yeah the fridge was really a last resort. I was definitely bummed not to get to shoot with it even just once. Oh well. I ended up painting it green and using it as a cool display.

      And I bought the Konica Minolta Maxxum, 7D, because I was already part of the user base, knowing that these issues could happen to me again because my first one already had it happen

    About 15 years ago, I had picked up a used Canon S2. I loved the capabilities of the camera, up until one day it developed a lens error. I've already had some experience repairing Canons with lens errors. Often a piece of dirt ends up in the gear train that works the lens barrel. I opened up this camera, and found that the gear teeth that work the focus mechanism were SHREDDED! There was no saving the camera.
    These days, the digicam I use is a Canon A540. I found this camera in a thrift store about a decade ago. This camera is interesting because the electronics have degraded in a way that provides an even more film-like experience. The LCD is hazy with terrible color rendering. It's really only good for menu adjustments, and very basic framing. It's a good thing the camera is equipped with an optical viewfinder. The other thing that's happened is that the mode switch that lets you enter picture review mode malfunctions 95% of the time. You can take pictures, but not look at them! Part of me is tempted to open it and see if there's some contact corrosion that can be removed, but I also enjoy the surprise when I get home and finally get to look at the photos on a computer.

      Hahaha yes that is a very film-like sounding camera! Sometimes that's just how it goes with those old electronics! 🤣 I do the same with my E300. The LCD is only good for framing and adjusting settings. But that makes it more exciting to get home and check them out!

    my 7D died just like that few years ago, there were few chances to get some 5D/7D or even A100 but those three cameras share the same issues so i skip those opportunities

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  4 месяца назад

      Yeah I had a technician tell me that on those cameras even if you find a working on, you're on borrowed time. Really sad situation, but ya not worth the money. Sorry to hear about your 7D!

    I recently tried my aged 5D again after years of not using. The black frame doesn't seem to be present but now a white or white/pink frame. I did several resets and battery changes.
    It does not work in single shot but I tried continuous shot.
    Now I'm getting frame one as white, frame two with an image but with an orange/red cast, frame three onward are perfect.
    I can conclude it is not the sensor but suspect the shutter.
    Give it a go in continuous and see if you get the same.

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  8 месяцев назад

      Hey that's definitely an interesting thought! Does it eventually "warm up" or does it require continuous at all times?

    • @brentwestbrook
      @brentwestbrook 8 месяцев назад

      @@ColtonMatocha At the moment, continuous but it tends to behave from the third frame onward. Just fully charging the batteries at the moment and giving it a full clean tomorrow. I'll see what happens.

      For me the solution was easy, albeit temporary.
      Restart the camera, enter the sensor cleaning mode and you’ll see the rear curtain doesn’t close completely. Push it down with any tool that won’t damage the infrared filter and it should start working again.

    I inherited my KM Maxxum 5D and I can't figure how to take a picture.
    I deleted the pics from the memory card so I know the memory card works.
    I found an online poorly written manual that gives directions how to "record" (which I think is the Japanese translation for take a picture) but no luck.
    Perhaps my camera is broken...

    • @ColtonMatocha
      @ColtonMatocha  Год назад

      So since the camera is broken, I had heard a few people mention they had success "fixing" the sensor by leaving it in the fridge for an extended period of time. So it's really the last ditch effort to fix the camera before I toss it. 😭
