This film was blackballed by the industry because it was not politically correct enough -- it paints a realistic picture of hardscrabble whites in dying coal towns and indigenous natives living poverty-stricken violent drug-addicted lives in the mountains -- the producers were sued by the Ramapo indians of New Jersey for libel and suit was dismissed by the court.

This is a fantastic movie, probably one of my favourites ever : not a movie for everybody, this is one for tough people.
To live around a mill, in a lame place, with debts, to experience lot of troubles, to deal with real ugly people.
Some people may find this movie unreal, really hard, too sad or depressing but this is reality . For some people life is just that hard
I consider this movie a real masterpiece and i have to watch it often.
I live in Europe, but in a very similar place - close to the mill, kind of bad hood - i've lost both my parents, i only live with my old brother and yes, we're full of debts and we saw quite some ugly stuff - i can quite relate with this story, but never went to war or jail ( Fortunately )
Again, a fantastic movie with amazing cast at his best - this is the kind of cinema i love -
    excellent - a solid 10 out of 10

And they say whites don't suffer. Poor white communities are the worst hit too. This film is identical were i grew up & still live. Drugs, killings, friends dieing young, kids with no Hope no future. People robbing Peter to pay Paul, struggling, stress, debt. Look at it now, it's worst. This movie is a true reflection of a poor world and how are just people just existing. People don't believe it...thing is it makes you tough, but it also makes you care so much. Mental health, gambling, addiction has been put in place to make it a whole lot worst. I really with you. My dad didn't want to know us. Ran off. My mum died young also.

This is a really small thing to pull out of this film, but the little gestures and looks that Casey Affleck gives in this movie are so hauntingly spot on for a soldier dealing with sever PTSD... Like when Woody's character first meets him and tells him hes going to teach him a lesson... that subtle scoff and brow tense. I've seen it so many times. And when Bale's character tells him not to be afraid to work for a living and he pulls his shirt up and screams into it. Honestly, he didnt have a lot of screen time, but Casey Affleck really did his role justice. As a combat vet who knows these emotions all too well, my hat's off to him. A very underrated actor in an underrated film.

The scene in the kitchen with the outburst is one of the most brilliantly acted scenes ever.

    Here's how it went. . .
    - Saw this very trailer MONTHS before release and was indescribably excited.
    - Upon release, both critics and "common movie-goers" on various websites gave reviews that made it out to seem mediocre at best, so I passed up seeing it.
-Came out on DVD/Blu Ray and I still said I didn't want to spend $20 for the blu ray so I caught it On Demand. . .
    - Loved it and, once again, realized that critics and other people's opinions are not always to be trusted. . . If you liked this trailer and have respect for Christian Bale, you should most definitely enjoy this movie.
    P.S. Woody Harrelson was excellent as well/usual. . .

***** Fair point. But for me, the fact that he *didn't* turn into Bateman is what I liked about this movie so much: Because for once, it shows that Hollywood can portray real life as it happens, often quietly, slowly and without a lot of explosions and gratuitous violence. There was a lot of tension in that final scene where he is pursuing his brother's killer -- yet all they are doing is slowly strolling through a field. That is brilliant to me. I feel the emotion of it all just recounting the scene here.

In case you haven't noticed the RUclips comment section exists so people can share their opinions which is what I did. I can have opinions without being an expert on a subject. Rating film quality is completely subjective but in MY personal opinion this film could have been much better. Absolutely one of the greatest films of all time --- gritty, realistic, touching, violent, and redeeming. With an stellar performances by Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Sam Shepard and more. No happy-go-lucky love story here -- filmed in coal towns around Pittsburgh bedeviled by hard times, economic desolation and post-Iraq war depression. Searing and tragic emotions around the doomed love between a poor white ex-con and his black girlfriend. Frightening trip into the mountains among hardscrabble hillbillies and indigenous native people -- to fight in a fixed bareknuckles bout -- a movie that pulls no punches and throbs with tragic human interest throughout.

Most people who say this movie wasn't good at all don't enjoy a lot of thriller/crime movies. If you enjoy films like Prisoners with Hugh Jackman, you will enjoy this movie. Both have the same type of feel to them and I thought the movie was an all around great film for people who like gritty thrillers like this one. If you are looking for an action movie where every scene is action you are in the wrong place. Looking at the comments I can see a lot of people who thought the film was bad were looking for a movie that was an action movie, not a thriller. They are two different genres entirely. Script was good and cast was good, people who say they weren't are just disappointed and thought it was a high impact action movie considering how a lot of the comments are. Just my opinion.

This movie is about revenge and justice. I just finished watching this and I can feel the agony that Christian Bale was conveying, such great acting. It was emotional, and the feeling still lingers even after I've finished watching it. I recommend you to watch it. Just don't expect the movie to be an action film.

Probably the most unsung, underappreciated film of all time. Im serious. Just a flat out masterpiece. Casey Afflecks scene in the kitchen where he loses it is one of the greatest scenes of acting you will ever see...

+The Batman yeah but that rumor is bullshit though... dicaprio produced this movie and the person who wrote that they hate each other was a publicist that bale let go and that asshole wrote a book bout him without his permission... the reason ik he's lying is cuz he publicly released that bales daughter's name isnt what everyone thinks it is (bale never speaks publicly about his childrens names) and he used a fake name to protect her... but that dude went ahead and told everyone. that is wrong

excellent movie ! I love this Appalachia VS Rust Belt type of movies. Both Cultures are under rated & this is coming from a Puerto Rican born n raised in Brooklyn whos lived for a little while in West Va & also visited Youngstown ohio a few times. This movie was truly perfect in my heart. I hate how the ratings went for this film. smfh people have no taste now a days. This film truly depicted the rust belt & Appalachia regions perfectly along with their cultures.

Its so real, so true, its like its just cut out of a real life in small town. So well well scripted, and the actors are A1, all of them hit it right on exactly what would be reaction in real time. Definetly th biggest under rated movie of all time.
This should have won every award ever made. Im a 46yo man, and even i cry wTching this one

I don't really get why people say this trailer spoils everything. You only get the general situation and glimpses of the characters and their roles. We don't know what's going to happen. A good trailer is not about not giving the plot away, but it's about giving enough to keep you wanting more. This certainly did that. Can't wait.

MEDIA & HOLLYWOOD never gave this movie an ounce of publicity. Its a great movie about what regular Americans go through & Hollywood does everything it can to avoid such story's. I personally believe anyone thats lived in America over the past 40 years will understand this movie & enjoy it. No it's not a feel good story but its a relative to what's happening even today. If you like Drama & real life story telling you'll like this.
